When I signed my first bk deal in 2018, lking frward t the release f my debut(首次亮相)nvel in 2020,I knew I was abut t embark n an amazing adventure.
I went int my first cntract(合约)determined t make it wrk. By that I meant t be successful enugh t guarantee that I’d be signed again and again. I thught it was a case f G Big r G Hme.
Admittedly, debuting is always stressful, but I definitely made things mre difficult by pressuring myself t prmte and beating myself up when anything didn’t g well. The dds were nt in my favur, with cvid-19 spreading and my editr leaving. The thing I feared mst happened: my cntract wasn’t renewed. I felt abslutely depressed, embarrassed t, that my first bk hadn’t sld well.
Luckily, I’m in a grup f debut authrs, s had plenty f supprt. Over time I watched ther peple’s jurneys with interest. Sme debuted straight int the bestseller lists; sme had film rights ptined. Others, like me, had a less-than-ideal start. Sme had even mre difficult times—lst agents, cancelled cntracts, dashed hpes. The mst imprtant thing I learned is that there is n ne fixed path t success and that curage and determinatin g a lng way. I’ve seen authrs with a pr sales recrd getting anther sht; thse wh didn’t start welt smetimes find huge success with their secnd nvel. There are s many different paths and always new things t dream abut.
Thse wh’ve read my clumn frm the start might have seen my blind ptimism, my crash, my reflectin n writerly life. Hwever, I’m pleased that I’m able t write this, my last clumn, and say that I am finally ptimistic, excited, even, abut the future, abut my ability t diversify, experiment and netwrk and abve all, write and write and write. I knw there will be lws, but as lng as I can write, I’ll be alright.

      A. Well begun, half dne.B. All rads lead t Rme.
      C. Practice makes perfect.D. Great minds think alike.
      7. Where is this text prbably taken frm?
      A. A scientific jurnal.B. A literary magazine.

When it cmes t navigating (导航) areas, past studies shwed that the abilities dn’t truly kick in until 12. Hwever, a new study has revealed that children aged 5 can find their way arund large spaces.
The researchers invlved with this study previusly cncentrated n three regins f the adult brain that help navigatin: PPA, which lets us recgnize places and assign them t different categries, RSC, which maps these places within a larger space and OPA, which keeps us frm running int bjects. In 2024, they fund that the system assciated with OPA desn't fully develp until the age f 8. Hwever, they therized that yunger children must still be able t create a map f their surrundings, even befre they can walk well.
The new study cnfirmed that RSC is already well-develped in children yunger than 8. The results cme frm an interesting experiment invlving five-year-ld participants wh became familiar with a virtual lcatin called “Tiny Twn” full f entertaining landmarks like ice cream stres, playgrunds and fire statins. “We want t get answers, but it’s als imprtant that participants have a gd time and a gd impressin f science,” said Yaelan Jung, first authr f the study.
Then the researchers cnducted fMRI scans (磁共振扫描) n the children, during which they participated in a game-like task where they were shwn images frm Tiny Twn and pressed a buttn if the images accurately related. Data frm the scans prved that the children were able t create a map in their minds, using RSC in their brains t facilitate navigatin in larger spaces.
The next step, the researchers say, is t lk int the brain develpment f tddlers (学步孩童) with cleverer strategies. “It’s stimulating t explre hw humans use different parts f the brain fr cmplex behavirs and hw that changes with age and experiences,” Jung said in a press release. “We’re als laying the grundwrk fr clinical applicatins.”
      8. Accrding t the new study, why can five-year-lds navigate large areas?
      A. They can mentally map a large envirnment.
      B. Their OPA regin has develped t the full.

      D. T adjust kids’ emtin befre the experiment.

Nw, artificial intelligence (AI) is cming fr the mst attractive and exciting jbs. Stars may wrry that AI is stealing their wrk and giving less talented perfrmers the skills t take away their audience. In fact, the famus individuals cmplaining the mst ludly abut the new technlgy are the nes wh stand t benefit the mst. Far frm weakening star pwer, AI will make the biggest celebrities bigger than ever by allwing them t be in all markets, in all types f media, at all times.
This isn’t the first time that technlgy has changed the rules f the fame game. Peple started talking abut stars in the 18th century when the widespread access t reading materials made it pssible t be truly famus within yur lifetime. Film and radi riginally seemed like a threat t stars, wh wrried their live perfrmances wuld be devalued. In fact, thse technlgies started the era f the superstar, a term that caught n in the 1920s. A similar wrry greeted the inventin f televisin. But again, the new tech made the famus even mre s, bringing them int every living rm.
As AI-generated cntent flds int the entertainment business, artists and entertainment prfessinals are wrrying nce mre that their fame will be reduced — and again, the utcme is likely t be the ppsite. These pprtunities cme with cnditins attached. Artists are right t wrry abut , which must be prtected if AI is nt t becme a legalised frm f piracy. Until these cpyright cncerns are addressed, AI will be a legal Wild West.
The bigger questin is hw the age f the all-arund superstar will appeal t audiences. The risk is bredm. AI is brilliant at remixing and repeating ld material but less gd at creating exciting cntent that, fr nw, remains a human specialty.
Yet the entertainment market is highly self-crrecting. Audiences have the pwer t turn a ht hit int a has-been ne in an instant, as stars are all t aware. While AI-pwered entertainment grws, cnsumers still seem t enjy human drama. Sprt, perhaps the mst AI-prf, real-life event there is, has seen its value t media cmpanies rise in recent years.
      12. What is the primary cncern f stars in paragraph 1?
      A. The inability t master AI.B. The lw level f their acting skills.
      C. The decline in their ppularity.D. The imprvement f audience’s taste.
      13. Why des the authr mentin “film, radi and televisin”?
      A. T shw the difficulties facing the stars then.
      B. T prve the techn-panic is cmmn in histry.
      C. T cnfirm AI will surely cme int every family.
      D. T predict the trend f the technlgical develpment.
      14. Hw can superstars attract audience accrding t the text?
      A. By aviding the use f AI.B. By cperating with directrs.
      C. By learning mre advanced technlgies.D. By imprving cntent creatin.
      15. What is the text mainly abut?
      A. The era f AI is arund the crner.
      B. AI creates a brand-new entertainment industry.
      C. AI makes stars wrried and audience demanding.
      D. AI is mre f a helper than an imagined threat t stars.
