Zha’s recrd-breaking mment happened during a trial event fr China’s natinal team n March 26. Since the event was nt apprved by the Internatinal Federatin f Sprt Climbing (IFSC), his achievement was nt fficially recgnized. Nevertheless, evidently Zha has emerged as ne f China’s mst prmising speed climbers.
Brn in 2009 in Suzhu, Zha’s jurney with speed climbing began at age 5, when a friend dragged him t a climbing gym. What started as a weekly hbby sn ccupied his weekends. Zha credits his quick prgress t scientific training and active thinking. After his first winter training camp with the natinal team, he emerged transfrmed. “The team’s envirnment pushed me t train smarter. The natin’s best climbers are here, and every sessin demands yur abslute best,” said Zha. Between training sessins, Zha reads histry bks, sci-fi stries, and a bigraphy f basketball legend Kbe Bryant. When he can’t sleep, he watches climbing vides t study thers’ mvements. “Climbing isn’t just physical. It’s a mental game. Withut active thinking, yu can’t reach the tp level in any sprt,” Zha said.
Fr nw, age rules stp Zha frm cmpeting in internatinal events, but he sees the delay as an pprtunity t imprve his perfrmance. “Next year, I’ll cmpete internatinally in peak frm t strive fr hnr fr my cuntry,” he tld Xinhua.

Dctr Dlittle, the well-knwn, fictinal naturalist wh famusly pssesses the ability t cnverse with animals and understand their languages has nw inspired a high-paying science prize aimed at cracking the challenge f interspecies cmmunicatin. A grand prize f $500,000, awaits whichever research team can make real prgress: nt just decding the language f anther species but using it t draw a reply frm an animal. Last week, an initial $100,000 went t a US team studying dlphin whistles — after decades f recrding bttlense dlphins in Flrida, they identified arund 20 distinct messaging whistles.
The Cller Dlittle Challenge financed by Jeremy Cller, a vegan and animal lver, is unashamedly mdelled n the Turing test (图灵测试). That 20th-century test prmtes effrts t design a machine capable f imitating human cnversatin, and became a tuchstne in the evlutin f AI. It als became a fcus fr cncerns abut machines tricking, even taking ver, humans. The ability t cmmune with ther species is likely t raise similar, unsettling questins as research prgresses. If we were able t decde animal chatter, shuld this knwledge change hw we treat them, whether as pets, labur r fd? The prize presents a mral challenge and it frces us t recnsider ur relatinships with ther species.
Philspher Jnathan Birch, als a judge f the Jeremy Cller Centre, stressed that the Challenge is lking beynd the interspecies cmmunicatin we have with pets, r that a farmer has with a sheepdg. Thse relatinships invlve signalling and behaviural respnses, Birch explains, “but that’s nt telling us hw animals cmmunicate with each ther... this prize is abut understanding it s well that we can start t jin the cnversatin.”
While Cller hpes his charity will reshape ur attitude t animals, the truth is that even grundbreaking research has largely failed t mve the dial n their welfare. Recent wrk n cephalpd’s (头足类动物) intelligence has nt stpped plans t farm the creatures. We might ne day be able t understand what animals are saying — but there is n guarantee we will listen.
8. Why is Turing test mentined in the passage?
A. T stress its rle and value in AI prgress.
B. T shw its difference frm the Challenge.
C. T warn f cncerns the Challenge may face.
D. T shw its use in interspecies cmmunicatin.
9. Which research wuld Birch apprve f t win the prize?
A. Peple cmmunicating with their pets.
B. Peple directing sheepdgs during wrk.
C. Researchers recrding hw cattle cmmunicate.
D. Researchers interacting with birds using whistles.
10. What des the “mve the dial” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Make a change.B. Win the prize.
C. Slw the prcess.D. Cntinue the research.
11. What’s the authr’s attitude tward the practical effect f the research?
A. Optimistic.B. Dubtful.C. Objective.D. Dismissive.
D
Is text-messaging driving us apart? These days, we talk t each ther a lt with ur thumbs — sending six billin text messages a day, and likely a few billin mre n services like Whats App.
But sme wrry that s much messaging leads t less cmmunicatin. Fr instance, when hanging ut with friends, we’d be texting secretively at the same time, pretending t maintain eye cntact but mentally smewhere else.
New technlgies ften upset the way we relate t ne anther, f curse. But such divisin caused by texting have a strng ech in the arguments we had ver telephne a hundred years ag. The small device gave us a new way t cntact ne anther and quickly prmte new frms f scializing. Callers arranged regular “visiting” calls, dialing remte family t catch up n news.
Sn, thugh, scial critics thught it wuld be s easy t talk that we’d never leave each ther alne. Others wrried that the telephne sped up life, demanding instant reactins. The use f the telephne gave little rm fr reflectin. It prduced a craziness in the rdinary cncerns f life which didn’t make fr dmestic happiness. “We shall sn be nthing but transparent piles f jelly (果冻) t each ther,” a Lndn writer maned in 1897.
Hwever, nwadays the telephne call seems like a thrwback t a gentler era. When Jenna Birch, a cmmunicatin prfessr at the University f Iwa, started dating a man wh insisted n calling her n the phne, she fund it warm and delightful. S she desn’t think the shift t texting has degraded ur interactins. Accrding t her study, teenagers wh text the mst are als thse wh spend the mst time face t face with friends. Cmmunicatin, it seems, brings mre cmmunicatin, and — as she argues — just because talk happens in text desn’t mean it’s nt meaningful.
Michéle Martin f Carletn University, thinks we’re living thrugh a replay f the telephne, where the things that made it valuable — instant cmmunicatins — are the same that made it annying. “Peple believe they are liberated because they can bring the mbile phne everywhere,” Martin says. “But at the same time, they are slaves t it.”
12. What’s the functin f the first paragraph?
A. T intrduce the tpic.B. T describe a scene.
C. T ffer an argument.D. T issue a warning.
13. Accrding t paragraph 4, what des telephne use cause?
A. Peple experience very tight schedule.B. Peple tend t lack individuality.
C. Peple becme narrw and uninfrmed.D. Peple lse the ability t reflect.
14. What can we learn frm paragraph 5?
A. Telephne calls are particularly welcmed in dating.
B. Teenagers are addicted t cmmunicating by texting.
C. The shift t texting is destructive t face-t-face time.
D. The meaning f cmmunicatin ges beynd medium.
15. What’s the best title fr the text?
A. Oh My Gd! We’ve Been Here Befre!B. Gne with the Wind, Dear Texting!
C. Life is T Shrt fr S Many Texting.D. Oh, Telephne, a Tale f Tw Sides.
