His mther had spent the entire mrning in their tiny apartment kitchen carefully preparing a gift: hmemade mncakes wrapped in red paper decrated with dragn patterns. “In China, red brings gd luck and the dragn represents strength,” she said prudly. “These mncakes carry ur family’s blessings.”
      At the party, clrful ballns danced alng the ceiling (天花板), and the living rm was filled with the latest pp sngs. Li Wei nticed everyne’s gifts piled (堆放) n a table, and he placed his gift n the tp, whse traditinal appearance std ut amng the gifts. He lked arund and fund that mst f the faces were unfamiliar. S he sat dwn and listened t the music, waiting excitedly fr that big mment — pening the gifts. Sn it came. In the cheers f her friends, Emma walked ver t the table. Her eyes were immediately drawn t Li Wei’s uniquely wrapped gift. Hwever, when she pened it, silence fell as she stared at the unfamiliar pastries (糕点). “What…are these?” she asked hesitantly. A by leaned ver and laughed ludly, “Lks like play-dugh (橡皮泥)!” Heat rushed t Li Wei’s face as he stammered (结结巴巴地说), “They’re traditinal Chinese mncakes ...” Hwever, his vice was swallwed (淹没) by the laughter that fllwed.
      Smene even whispered, “This might be leftvers frm his hme. He must think it’s a picnic uting.” Li Wei’s heart sank. He didn’t expect that his well-intended gift — a gesture f lve, nw turned int smething strange and unwelcme in this freign setting. The jyful atmsphere disappeared quickly, replaced by an uncmfrtable silence as guests lked at the mncakes as if they were strange bjects frm anther wrld. Just as Li Wei wished he culd disappear, he suddenly remembered what his mther had said with pride befre he came here.
