1. 表示过去某一具体时刻正在进行的动作，常与at that time, at that mment, at this time, yesterday, at nine yesterday 等表示过去的时间状语连用。有时也可没有时间状语，需根据语境体会。
· —What were yu ding at seven ’clck last night? 昨晚7 点你正在做什么？—I was watching TV. 我正在看电视。· We were reading bks at that time. 那时我们正在读书。
2. 表示过去某一时间段内一直进行的动作，常与the whle day, all day yesterday, thse days, that week, last winter 等时间状语连用。·They were wrking all day yesterday. 昨天他们工作了一整天。·He was visiting Beijing that week. 那个星期他在游览北京。·They were planting trees thse days. 那些天他们在植树。
过去进行时句子中的谓语部分由“was/were + 动词的现在分词”构成，与现在进行时结构相似，只是把现在进行时中的am/is/are 变成了was/were。由此可总结过去进行时的句式结构如下：
记忆口诀:过去进行时速记口诀：过去进行最好记，was/were 后加v. -ing；特定时间有暗示，过去某刻某时段；肯定主语位句首，一般问句be 提前；否定句式更简单，be 后仅把nt 添。
考点3 过去进行时和一般过去时的区别
考点4 过去进行时可以和when, while 引导的时间状语从句连用，构成复合句。
注意：当主句和从句的动作同时发生或都是延续性动词且主句和从句都用过去进行时的时候，多用while 引导时间状语从句。· It was snwing when we reached the statin.当我们到达车站时正下着雪。(reach 为终止性动词) · They arrived while we were having dinner.我们吃晚饭的时候他们到了。(have 为延续性动词) · While I was reading, my mther was washing clthes. 我读书时，我的妈妈正在洗衣服。
