Why is the elephant trunk (鼻子) s wrinkly? In a new study in the jurnal Ryal Sciety Open Science, researchers ffer up sme answers. This all started when Michael Brecht, a neurbilgist at Humbldt University in Berlin, and his clleagues were studying the brains f African savannah elephants and Asian elephants when they nticed a bump n each f the brain stems the size f a fava bean.
“It’s very unusual. It lks very different frm all ther mammals,” Brecht says.
It sn became clear t the researchers that the number f stripes — each ne a bundle f nerve fibers — crrespnded nearly exactly t the number f wrinkles in the elephant’s trunk. This discvery mtivated him t take a clser lk.
First, Brecht and his team tracked dwn phtgraphs f elephant fetuses (胎儿) t examine hw the trunk develps. “It’s an incredibly fast grwing bdy part, mre than any ther bdy part,” Brecht says. A cuple mnths int develpment, the fetal trunk has abut fur wrinkles — at which pint there’s sudden expnential grwth. “Every 20 days, the number f wrinkles dubles,” he says.
After a few mnths, things slw dwn. “African savannah elephants nly add relatively few wrinkles in adulthd,” Brecht says. “In Asian elephants, there are nticeably mre wrinkles added.” Brecht suspects this may be due t differences in hw the tw grups f elephants use their trunks fr grasping. African savannah elephants use the tips f their trunks t pinch bjects, pick them up and manipulate them. Asian elephants can d sme pinching. “But when yu give them a big fruit like a meln r a mang,” says Brecht, “they wrap their trunk arund the bject. S ur thinking is that the wrinkles serve fr making the trunk flexible.”
Brecht als used a micr-CT scanner t lk at newbrn trunks in detail. He fund that the skin is super thin in the trughs f the wrinkles, allwing them essentially t behave like jints. Maëlle Lefeuvre, a behaviral eclgy dctral student at Jagiellnian University in Kraków, thinks there may be engineering lessns t learn frm these findings. Lafeuvre says understanding wrinkle frmatin and functin culd help infrm the cnstructin f a flexible and pwerful trunk-like machine r rbtic arm, fr example.
Fr Brecht, the findings reinfrce hw these bdy parts are exquisitely hned t help giant creatures feed, wherever they may live. “Yu cannt be such a big animal withut being very heavily specialized,” he says.
      28. What did Brecht’s study riginally fcus n?
      A. Wrinkles n elephants’ trunks.B. The brain f tw kinds f elephants.
      C. The brain f mammals.D. Elephant fetuses.
      29. What d we knw abut Brecht’s study f elephant fetuses?
      A. The increase f the number f wrinkles keeps the same speed.
      B. The trunk develps slwer than ther parts in elephant fetuses.
      C. The number f wrinkles rckets up in the first few mnths.

prvide a platfrm fr...
空格处引导非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词platfrm,且在从句中作主语,所以用which引导该从句;也可将 “____ prmtes better understanding and cperatin between cuntries in a multicultural cntext” 看作与前文prvides... 故填 which/and。
故填an。
根据时间状语in recent years可知,空处谓语动词需用现在完成时态,结构为:have/has dne,主语是复数They,所以助动词需用have。故填have inspired。
an pprtunity t d sth.
