I think I might be a NIMBY. This is rather hard fr me t accept, because that shrtened wrd (Nt In My BackYard)is typically used t criticize smene as self-centered. I even recall when I first heard the wrd —at schl, sme 30 years ag. My teacher explained it was that UK prperty develpers are frequently frustrated byTAL#NBSP hpcritical hmewners, wh claim t be in favur f prgress(new husing, fr instance), but then bject when actual prpsals emerge t develp such things in their pstcdes.
As a yung adult I lived in Lndn, s I never had cause t revise my pinin. But then I mved t the green belt where ur huse is surrunded by fields. Lk ut, and yu see nthing man-made at all, unless the farmer is taking ut his cmbine harvester (I A 4&&JI). The view was the reasn we bught here. Thanks t prtective planning regulatins intrduced decades ag, here was a place where an authentic rural identity had been kept alive.
We culd have headed 40 minutes further nrth, and settled upn anther similar lking village with less threat f being swallwed up by the city. But then, that wuldn't be the same at all, wuld it? Our village's clseness t Lndn is the precise thing that elevates it abve and beynd its wnderful views—because the fact that it might ne day be destryed and turned t cncrete is what makes it mst special. It's nt just a place yu live in. It's a place yu feel an urge t prtect.
Yet the planning applicatins cme thick and fast, each applicatin abandning prir cmmitments t preservatin. On a weekly basis, sme leaflet drps thrugh my dr frm lcal campaigners prtesting 177 huses here, 231 huses there. I always sigh and attempt t evaluate these "NIMBY"flyers(17)prperly, rather than just write a cmplaint t the cuncil. After all, new huses need t be built smewhere, right?
And if we didn't live where we d, these plans wuldn't upset me. It's because f their intentin t build s clse t my prperty-In My Back Yard-that I'm s aware f the changes that such develpments wuld bring. S, I add my signature t the flyers.

One f the biggest privileges f being a bilgist is spending time in remte lcatins with mnkeys and apes, living near these animals in their habitats and experiencing their daily lives. As a 2 Ist-century human, I have an immediate impulse t take pictures f these encunters and share them n scial media.
Scial media can help scientists raise awareness f the species we study, prmte their cnservatin and btain jbs and research funding. Hwever, sharing images f wild animals nline can als cntribute t illegal animal trading and harmful human-wildlife interactins.
My research seeks t find ways fr scientists and cnservatinists t better use the pwer f scial media while aviding its risks. My clleague, eclgist Cathryn Freund, and I think we have sme answers. In ur view, wildlife prfessinals shuld never include themselves in pictures with animals. We als believe that featuring baby animals and animals interacting with humans leads viewers t think abut these creatures in ways that are cunterprductive t cnservatin.
In a study published in 2023, my clleagues and I created tw Instagram psts—ne shwing a human near a wild grilla, the ther fcusing n a glved human hand hlding a lris (蜂猴). Half f these phts carried basic captins(图注)like "Me with a muntain grilla"r "Me with my research subject";the ther half included mre detailed captins that als stated, "All animals are bserved"r "captured and handled safely and humanely fr research with the prper permits and training. "
We shwed ver 3, 000 adults ne f these Instagram psts and asked them t cmplete a survey. The results shcked us. Viewers wh saw the Instagram psts with the mre detailed captin recgnized that the picture was abut research. But regardless f the captin, mre than half f the viewers agreed r strngly agreed that they wuld want t seek ut a similar experience with the lris r grilla. Over half f the viewers agreed r strngly agreed that they wuld want these animals as pets and that the animals wuld make gd pets.
S, the last thing that any respnsible cnservatin bilgist studying endangered species wants t d is-encurage this kind f human-wildlife cntact.

The bk has a unique status as a symbl f human culture and civilizatin. It is a vchicle fr sharing stries, spreading knwledge, examining the nature f ur extrardinary species and imagining what lies beynd ur knwn wrld. As Carlyle suggests, bks ultimately prvide an invaluable and cmprehensive recrd f what it means t be human.
This vlume takes a list f fifty f the mst influential bks f all time, putting each int its histrical cntext. Frm ancient game-changers like the Epic f Gilgamesh and the Iliad, thrugh sacred texts and wrks f philsphical reflectin by the likes f Cnfucius and Plat, via scientific essays, histric 'firsts'and cultural wrks f enduring impact, these are vlumes that are at nce bth prducts f their scieties and vital texts in influencing thse same civilizatins.
What this selectin isn't is a celebratin f the literary cann (精品), a reaffimatin f the 'best'bks frm the past. Yu will find n Austen r Dickens here, nr Dstyevsky r Garcia Marquez. There is Shakespeare and Cervantes and Tlsty, but nt because they are smehw better'than thse thers. Rather, this cllectin aims t select bks that reflect the passage f human histry. Mst nt nly reflect, thugh, but themselves changed hw we think and live. By definitin, they are 'imprtant' wrks and, in brad critical terms, 'great'wrks t. But this bk is nt cncerned with which wrks are the greatest f all —there are plenty f ther vlumes that try t figure that ut, and gd luck t them.
Unavidably, making a selectin such as this is highly subjective. In selecting fifty titles, we can nly hpe t dip ur te int the vast pl f literature frm ages gne by. In ding s, it is flish t make any claim fr definitiveness(确定性).Instead, we are playing a literary game. Which f the fifty chices are undeniable?
Which are taking a place better deserved by sme ther wrk? Everyne will have their wn ideas. In the end, it matters little that we all agree. Mre imprtant is that by turning ur minds t the questin in the first place, we might meet sme unfamiliar wrks, revisit sme ld favrites, and gain sme insight and pleasure in the prcess.
(1) What is Paragraph I mainly abut?
A. The nature f civilizatin.
B. Carlyle's invaltable suggestin.
C. Bks' substantial rle.
D. The uniqueness f humanity.
(2) The 50 bks were selected fr the vlume because
A. they are the greatest wrks
B. they ffer histrical evidence
C. they reflect literary evlutin
D. they have impacted civilizati
(3) What can we infer frm the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?
A. Literary appreciatin is a game fr us.
B. We select literary wrks subjectively.
C. Literature is t hard fr us t explre.
D. We shuld make claims definitively.
(4) What is the ultimate gal f presenting the list f fifty bks?
A. T inspire literary explratin.
B. T prmte little-knwn bks.
C. T seek agreement n literature.
D. T rank literary wrks definitively.

What drives peple t travel-t leave the cmfrt f hme fr the uncertainty f a freign cuntry? Why d we brave unknwn--subject urselves t the stress and tiredness f lng (fly), buses, and trains?
And what d we expect t find n the ther side? Fr many f us, the attractin f travel is change-change frm ur daily rutines, ur jbs, and the peple and places in ur lives. We desire smething different, trading cmfrt uncertainty, affluence (富足)fr simplicity, and rutine fr the thrill f the unfamiliar.Simply changing ur surrundings (free)us frm ur everyday stresses, therefre changing the mindsets ur daily lives have shaped. Many travelers hit the rad t create lasting memries during their shrt time n Earth. Returning t Rts
As the ecnmic dwnturn cast a shadw, my life als tk an unexpected tum. The cmpany I had wrked fr ver a decade laid me ff, leaving me frustrated with the high cst f urban living. It was time t leave and return t my rts —a rural farmhuse I had inherited frm my grandfather.
Driving back t the cuntryside recalled a fld f memries —the cuntry rad, the wden cttage, the back yard garden …Yes! The garden! As a child, that garden was a magical place fr me, an asis(绿洲)bursting with clrs and life. The bright sunflwers, elegant lilies and a wden swing had been my playgrund, where my imaginatin ran wild amng the fluttering(飞舞的)butterflies. I can well remember the gardening time spent with my grandfather. I wuld fllw him arund with a small watering can, fen mre water landing n my shes than n the thirsty plants. Thse were mments f pure jy and laughter, eched by the splash(雪花)and my grandfather's gentle laugh.
Hwever, as we apprached, my heart sank. The huse, nce the Eden(伊甸园)f rural charm, std neglected. Windws brken and faded paint falling ff the walls, all filled with the unpleasant smell. I hesitated t take a step further. What wuld my lved asis be like? I dare nt imagining.
In cntrast, my children, Emma and Jack, were immediately attracted. With delight, they dashed int the huse, explring and playing just as I had at their age. When they pened the dr f the back yard, smething amazing happened. Thrugh it lay the garden, untended and wild, yet undeniably beautiful. Overgrwn with wildflwers and tall grasses, it had a purely natural beauty that seemed t be full f life. The sight rked an immediate reactin frm my kids. They dashed int the garden, with infectius laughter eching thrugh the air.
Just then, my wife came up, tapping my shulder. "Nature always finds a way t start ver, desn't it? "she said with a smile that warmed my heart. Her wrds, filled with wisdm and ptimism, eched arund us, mixed with the chrus f rustling (沙沙声)leaves and birdsng.
