Scientists in Australia have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) t help them lcate a rare bird called the Plains-wanderer. This new infrmatin will help scientists prtect the birds, which are endangered.
The Plains-wanderer is a small bird that lives in Australia’s grasslands. Nt just any grasslands. Plains-wanderers are picky. There can’t be t much grass r t little. Zs Victria, the grup behind the recent effrt t lcate Plains-wanderers, says the birds’ number has fallen by ver 85% in recent decades as grasslands have been turned int farms and cities. Scientists believe there are nw nly 250 t 1,000 f the birds left in the wild. Scientists have put the species int a “family” all by itself, since there are n ther similar birds. The female Plains-wanderers are larger, and are in charge f prtecting the territry while the male birds are smaller and take care f the eggs.
T prtect these rare birds, scientists first had t learn where they were, s Zs Victria wrked with Queensland University f Technlgy n a plan t lcate the birds. Since Plains-wanderers were hard t spt, the team chse t “listen” fr the birds instead. Female Plains-wanderers make an unusual “Om” call, and this is the key t lcate them.
The researchers set up 35 special recrding devices called “sng meters” in nine different grassy areas where Plains-wanderers culd pssibly have been. Sng meters recrded all the sunds made in an area ver a lng perid f time. The sng meters cllected tens f thusands f hurs f recrdings——far mre than humans culd analyze. S the researchers fed the recrdings t an AI system trained t identify the calls f Plains-wanderers. The AI system discvered Plains-wanderer calls cming frm tw f the sites. The scientists duble-checked and fund that the AI system was crrect. Chris Hartnett, wh wrked with Zs Victria, said it was like “finding gld”.
The new infrmatin will help scientists prtect the birds. And the researchers are still “listening”— using sng meters and AI t try t lcate mre f these Gldilcks birds.
8.What is the primary cause fr the Plains-wanderers’ ppulatin decline?
A.Habitat lss.B.Climate change.C.Increased enemies.D.Lack f fd surces.

10.What des the underlined sentence imply in paragraph 4?
A.The discvery is valuable.B.The birds prefer the grassland.
C.The birds are as expensive as gld.D.The prtectin f the birds is vital.
11.Why is AI essential in this research?
A.It predicts the future ppulatin trends.B.It replaces the need fr human scientists.
C.It prcesses amunts f sund data efficiently.D.It makes bird calls t attract Plains-wanderers.
Much has been written abut hw mdern lifestyles mean we are n lnger getting enugh sleep, unlike ur ancestrs living in less technlgically advanced times. Hwever, an analysis f 54 sleep studies has fund that peple in small, nn-industrialized scieties actually get less sleep than thse in mre industrialized regins.
It is ften assumed that the rise f electrnic devices like smartphnes means that peple tday are sleeping less than in the recent past. Many studies that reprt a decrease in sleep in the past few decades are based n asking peple hw lng they sleep, which is an unreliable measure. Research using mre reliable assessment tls, such as physical activity mnitrs, hasn’t fund a decrease ver recent decades. But these studies are dne in industrialized cuntries, leaving pen the questin f whether peple gt mre sleep prir t industrializatin.
The availability f wearable sleep mnitrs has made it easier t study sleep in nn-industrialized scieties. McKinnn and her clleague David Samsn have nw analyzed 54 sleep studies, cmparing sleeping habits in industrialized scieties, including the US, Australia and Sri Lanka, with thse in smaller, nn-industrialized cmmunities, including Indigenus peples in the Amazn, Madagascar and Tanna Island in the Pacific.
The 54 studies invlved direct measurements f sleep in peple aged 18 and ver wh had n serius health cnditins. The pair fund that in nn-industrialized scieties, the average was 6.4hurs, cmpared with 7.1 hurs in industrial scieties. They als fund that peple in nn-industrialized scieties were asleep fr 74 percent f the time they were in bed, cmpared with 88percent in industrial scieties, a measure knwn as sleep efficiency.
Samsn wes the higher sleep duratin and efficiency in industrialized scieties t safer and mre secure sleep cnditins. He remarks, “We n lnger need t wrry abut enemies r predatrs (捕食者) at night.” “While these studies invlve nly 866 peple in ttal, the data set is the mst cmprehensive yet,” says Samsn.
12.What is the miscnceptin abut sleep?
A.Peple with less advanced technlgies sleep less.
B.Peple in nn-industrialized scieties get less sleep.
C.The increasing use f phnes impacts sleep psitively.
D.Mdern lifestyles lead t a decrease in peple’s sleep time.
13.Hw did McKinnn and Samsn cnduct their research?
A.By analyzing previus studies n sleep.B.By cmparing the data set f sleep habits.
C.By recrding peple’s sleep time directly.D.By measuring sleep duratin and efficiency.
14.What can be learned frm McKinnn and Samn’s analysis?
A.Americans have lwer sleep efficiency.
B.Sri Lankans sleep 6.4 hurs per day n average.
C.Amazns enjy safe and secure sleep cnditins.
D.Tanna Islanders have less sleep than Australians.
15.What is Samsn’s attitude twards the 54 studies?
A.Dubtful.B.Cautius.C.Dismissive.D.Apprving.
