Hwever, Jamie was determined t make a difference and reduce the nutritinal gap she had bserved.
T vercme her lack f experience, Jamie cnducted thrugh research and applied fr a grant frm the Natinal Agriculture and Yuth Organizatin t fund her prject. She wrked tirelessly, spending tw t three hurs every day watering her crps during the ht summers f Kansas while balancing her ther cmmitments, like sccer practices. Being able t tell human faces apart is a skill that almst every persn has, althugh sme are far better at it than thers. But a new study frm the jurnal Scientific Reprts says that this is nt just a skill that humans pssess. Even fish can d it.
Fllwing up n research studying different species’ abilities t recgnize human faces (sheep, dgs, cws, hrses, and birds have all been tried), the researchers frm the University f Oxfrd and the University f Queensland decided t pick an animal that des nt have an evlved necrtex (大脑新皮层), the part f the brain that prcesses sight and sunds, and des nt have a clse relatinship with humans. That way, there wuld be n reasn why these test subjects wuld have a past histry f identifying human faces. S they picked the archerfish, a reef fish variety that shts water int the air t knck its prey (猎物) ut f the sky. They used this adaptatin t have the fish spray water at a face n a mnitr hanging ver their tanks fr a reward. Mst f the fish were able t pick ut their learned face, even when clurs were taken away r methds were used t make the face shapes unclear.
This study gives mre backing t the hypthesis that differentiating between faces is nt just a skill that big-brained rganisms are brn with. It is pssible that a gd prtin f recgnizing faces is learned ver time. The develpment f the necrtex may cntribute nly t quickly prcess a large number f faces in varying situatins. But mre wrk needs t be cnducted t find a deeper link t this pssible learned behaviur. The subject f this study was very small — nly eight fish were used altgether. Als the faces displayed n the mnitr were nly white, female faces frm a German database, shwn in a frntal view, with n expressins. Other animal trials have shwn that sme species, like pigens, respnd mre t differing angles and varied expressins.
28. Why were the archerfish chsen as test subjects?
A. They spray water t hit the prey.
B. They are cleverer than ther species.
C. They have sharp visin and hearing.
D. They aren’t clsely related t humans.
29. What is the authr’s attitude tward the study?
A. Cautius.B. Negative.C. Psitive.D. Ambiguus.
30. Which f the fllwing might be suggested fr further studies in the future?
A. Enlarging the human faces.B. Using black-and-white pictures.
C. Emplying mre male researchers.D. Including mre experimental subjects.
31. What is the purpse f this passage?
A. T reveal the differences between species.
B. T shw the way animals tell human faces apart.
C. T present a new discvery n a specific animal ability.
D. T intrduce the animals that can recgnize human faces.

We dn’t ften think f ur clthing as plastic, but much f it is. Plyester, nyln, acrylic, and ther synthetic fibers (化学纤维) are cmmn in the blended fabrics . As a result, textiles (纺织品) have becme an verlked surce f plastic pllutin. The new findings in a recent study detailed the “plastic leakage” with the fact that glbal apparel (服装) cnsumptin resulted in ver 20 millin tns f plastic waste in 2019.
In the study, textile waste was divided between tw surces: clthing made frm synthetic materials and clthing made frm cttn and ther natural fibers. The researchers lked at plastic waste generated acrss an apparel prduct’s “value chain” r the entire life cycle f a prduct — including nt nly the piece f apparel itself, but the plastics used t wrap it, fr example.
“Plastic leakage frm the apparel industry is cmpletely dminated by synthetic clthes reaching the end f their useful lives and nt being dispsed f in a respnsible manner,” Prfessr Geyer nted. “There is als waste frm manufacturing, packaging, and even frm tire abrasin during transprt,” Venditti added, “as well as micrplastics pulled int the water when we wash ur clthes.”
The researchers fund that synthetic apparel was by far the largest surce f plastic waste, with its value chain accunting fr 18 millin tns f waste in 2019, making up 89% f all plastic waste frm the glbal apparel industry that year. Of that, arund 8.3 millin tns may have leaked int the envirnment. Meanwhile, cttn clthing accunted fr 1.9 millin tns f plastic waste, with the final 0.31 millin tns cming frm fibers ther than synthetic textiles r cttn, mainly due t plastic used in packaging.
Where apparel was sld didn’t necessarily match where plastic waste ended up. Fr clthing riginally sld in high-incme cuntries, mst f the resulting pllutin happened in lwer-incme cuntries where these pieces f clthing might be sld in the secndary market. “The ecnmic and envirnmental burden f unsustainable apparel falls disprprtinately upn the develping ecnmies f the wrld,” Geyer said, “the industry shuld be mved tward a mre circular framewrk, where materials are recycled and d nt becme waste.” The study als recmmends increasing the use f renewable, nn-synthetic textiles.
32. What des the underlined phrase “plastic leakage” refer t in paragraph 1?
A. Micrplastics pulled int the river.
B. Prcess f hw plastic is prduced.
C. Envirnmental pllutin frm plastic waste.
D. Plastic waste generated acrss a “value chain”.
33. What is the primary reasn fr “plastic leakage”, accrding t Geyer?
A. The plastics used t wrap apparel.
B. Synthetic clthes dispsed randmly.
C. Waste frm manufacturing and transprtatin.
D. Clthing made frm cttn and ther natural fibers.
34. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
A. Synthetic textiles shuld be banned arund the wrld.
B. The study recmmends sme renewable materials t the public.
C. Lwer-incme cuntries shulder mre pressure frm waste clthing.
D. Lwer-incme cuntries shuld clse secndary markets fr used clthes.
35. What may pssibly be discussed in the fllwing paragraph?
A. A cnclusin f hw tday’s wrld was plluted by plastic waste.
B. The respnsibilities which the high-incme cuntries shuld take.
C. A call fr mre sustainable practices in prductin and cnsumptin.
D. The blame n the develping cuntries fr plluting the envirnment.
