The scial purpse f the system is t encurage creativity and the advancement f knwledge by giving thse wh make intellectual(智力的) cntributins a “unique right t their writings and discveries” fr limited times. Prtectin is prvided fr a much lnger time fr cpyrights than fr patents. The U.S. Cpyright Law f 1976 prvides a term f the lifetime f the authr plus 50 years. It recgnizes that the value f written wrks ften extends ver a lnger time than that f technlgical advances in the public area.
It is essential t register fr frmal prtectin in rder t have sme degree f prtectin against the infringement f ne's wrks by thers. The prcedure fr btaining a cpyright registratin is quite simple—an applicatin is submitted with a small fee and tw cpies f the wrk. N examinatin is made, and the cpyright is immediately in frce.
The Cpyright Office will prvide n request a variety f leaflets(小册子) describing the prcedure and giving infrmatin abut the classes f subject matter that can be registered.
Yu can cntact the Cpyright Office() fr mre infrmatin.

      A. a mvie abut a new methd f time travel
      B. an riginal musical cmpsitin fr children
      C. a bk abut ne's pinins n American laws
      D. an fficial dcument issued by the lcal cunty
      B[2024泰州兴化中学模拟]
Hw lng will it take yu t read this article? On average, adults read abut 240 wrds a minute, but I always take lnger. I shuld prbably feel embarrassed—but instead, I take jy in it.
I gt the habit f reading fr pleasure frm my mum. Reading is what I d first thing in the mrning and last thing at night. But it's always taken me a lng time. When I started reviewing bks, I was averaging 20 pages an hur. I have imprved t abut 30 pages, but that's still slw, accrding t sme literary critics.
Bk reviewers aren't the nly nes under pressure t read quickly. Pictures f “all the bks I read this mnth” are all ver scial media. And reading has becme a way f keeping up with the wrld. It is understandable that we try t make sense f events, but it can als fuel the idea that reading is a chre(苦差事), which it abslutely is nt.
Why wuld pleasure be equal t pace? My slw reading seems t be dwn t a cmbinatin f slwer prcessing speeds, and “subvcalising”—sunding ut wrds as I read them. But especially when it cmes t the_latter,_I wuldn't want t train myself t g faster. It was news t me that nt everyne subvcalises, because ne f my favurite things abut reading is hearing the language in my mind. Withut subvcalising, I wuldn't have caught the music f thse wrds.
Recently, I finished a bk f petry. Fr tw years, I read the pems each mrning in the fur minutes it tk my cffee t be ready. It was a wnderful reminder that reading is never abut quantity and always abut the quality f time yu spend with a text.
S when yu read, dn't stick a number n it—reslve t read fr pleasure, nt as a chre.
( ) 4. Why des the authr like slw reading?
      A. It wins her fame nline. B. It is a delightful practice.
      C. It cmes frm her mum. D. It helps her reach gals.
      ( ) 5. What d fast readers fcus n?
      A. Quantity. B. Quality. C. Cntent. D. Sund.
( ) 6. What d the underlined wrds “the latter” in Paragraph 4 refer t?
      A. Slwer prcessing speeds. B. Learning language.
      C. Cmbining speeds and sunds. D. Reading wrds ut.
( ) 7. What wuld the authr agree with?
      A. Reading is a demanding task. B. Pace equals reading pleasure.
      C. Beauty f wrds needs tasting. D. Petry takes n effrt t digest.
      C[2024厦门实验中学期中]
Here were the simple instructins given by a Harvard University assistant prfessr t peple participating in a recent science study: “Imagine the fllwing scene. Visualize it in yur mind's eye, as vividly as yu can: a persn walks int a rm and kncks a ball ff a table.”
The prfessr, Tmer Ullman, then asked thse in the study abut their mental images: “Did yu see hw big the ball was? Hw abut the persn's hair clur?” Mst participants visualized the frmer but nt the latter. Ullman and his clleagues term this absence f details “nncmmitment” t mental imagery(意象).
Brain imaging studies shw that mental imagery engages the same neurns(神经元) in similar ways as perceptin(感知). Visualizing things seems t have much in cmmn with actually seeing them. But if mental images are indeed pictures, why d they lack such simple details?
Ullman and clleagues cnducted a series f experiments in which participants visualized the ball and table scene and were then presented with the questins selected by the researchers. The findings shw 78% f participants did nt visualize at least tw details. Peple are ften unaware f hw little detail their mental images cntain until asked. They dn't ntice hw much they dn't ntice. It has nthing t d with a persn frgetting the cntents f a mental image, and it is als fund in peple with vivid imaginatins.
“Nearly everyne can tell yu the size f the ball but nt the persn's hair clur,” Ullman says. “It's like we have ne hierarchy when we cnstruct images, first we build space high up and then things like clurs are further dwn.” This is the same with Ksslyn's “skeletal image” thery, in which the verall shape is first generated and ther details are then added as needed.
“There are imagerybased systems fr interviewing peple wh witnessed a crime t guide them thrugh trying t visualize it as accurately as pssible,” Ksslyn says. Imaginatin is an issue, but understanding nncmmitment better culd help develp ways f getting mre accurate eyewitness evidence, he says. “That's wrth a lt.”
      ( ) 8. What des nncmmitment t mental imagery refer t?
      A. Imagining a scene in ne's mind vividly.
      B. Remembering the size f a ball exactly.
      C. Picturing things in ne's mind partially.
      D. Frgetting a persn's hair clur entirely.
( ) 9. Why d peple ignre sme details when visualizing things?
      A. They fail t realize. B. They have pr memries.
      C. They lack rich imaginatin. D. They think in a wrng way.
( )10. What des the underlined wrd “hierarchy” prbably mean in Paragraph 5?
      A. Grade. B. Order. C. Height. D. Standard.
( )11. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
      A. The ptential value f the research.
      B. The further prspect f the research.
      C. The imprtance f lking fr a witness.
      D. The difficulty in finding evidence f a crime.
      D[2024镇江期中]
Imagine yu're ut fr an evening strll(闲逛) in a freign city, lking t find a restaurant fr dinner. Yu will lk fr the busiest restaurant with the mst diners because its ppularity is bund t reflect n the quality f fd and service. But is this true?
In turist areas, which lack regular, lcal custmers, the number f diners is unlikely t hld infrmatin abut the quality f the meal. In this case, fllwing the example f thers culd have led t a subptimal(次佳的) dinner chice in an vercrwded restaurant.
Spntaneusly(不由自主地) cpying ther peple's thughts r chices r simply ging with the crwd is ften referred t as “herd behaviurs”. It is a frequent ccurrence amng humans as well as many ther animals, a cmmn example being sheep.
Herding can appear t make a lt f sense. Average judgements f large grups f peple ften utperfrm individual chices. Furthermre, fllwing the crwd appears t ffer prtectin and cmfrt—after all, there's “safety in numbers”—while helping t maintain a favurable reputatin. Finally, fllwing the herd reduces the effrt needed t make a persnal r unique decisin.
Herd behaviurs, while cmmn and easy t explain, can have many harmful effects. Blindly fllwing the herd can have grave cnsequences when trying t escape frm danger. As seen in examples during earthquakes, herding may result in the entire crwd rushing fr the same dr, even if ther exits are available. This unavidably affects evacuatin(撤退) effrts and may result in avidable injuries r even deaths.
Psychlgy research suggests that it's surprisingly difficult t resist the influences f the herd. In an experiment invlving financial decisin making, researchers fund that warning messages abut the ptential errrs f the crwd were surprisingly ineffective in helping custmers make better chices. It appears that there is n quick and easy fix. Instead, it is advisable t invlve individuals adpting mre critical appraches twards peers' pinins, and questining thers' behaviurs as ppsed t blindly fllwing them.
( )12. What des the authr want t tell us by the restaurant example?
      Undesirable utcmes f herding.
      B. Wise dinner chices f mst custmers.
      Practical ways f aviding herding.
      D. Pr cnditins f ppular dining places.
( )13. What des Paragraph 4 mainly tell us abut herding?
      A. Its applicatin. B. Its disadvantages.
      C. Its definitin. D. Its benefits.
( )14. What des the authr advise readers t d in the last paragraph?
      A. Send warning messages. B. Fllw peers' pinins.
      C. Stp behaving critically. D. Have ur wn judgements.
( )15. Which is the best title fr the text?
      A. Why Can't Yu Find the Reasns fr Herding?
      B. Why Shuldn't Yu Fllw the Crwd Blindly?
      C. When Shuld Yu Avid Influences f Herding?
      D. Hw Can Yu Discver Wisdm f Crwds?

One day, as Emily sat in her art class, her teacher, Mrs Andersn, annunced an upcming art cmpetitin. The cmpetitin shwcased the talents f students frm varius schls in the city. The rm buzzed with excitement. Her mind flashed back t her bedrm where impressive artwrks were displayed n the walls, each piece seemingly mre attractive than the last. Emily's heart skipped a beat at the thught f participating, but her shyness held her back. Selfdubt crept in, whispering that her wrk wuldn't measure up t the talent surrunding her. Emily wndered if she had made a mistake by even cnsidering entering.
