Scientists said that electrically stimulating a particular regin in the brain culd help peple with injured spinal
crds (脊髓) walk mre easily.
The new technique is intended fr peple with spinal crd injuries where the cnnectin between their brain
and spinal crd hasn’t been ttally severed, and wh still have sme mvement in their legs.
The research was cnducted by a Swiss team that has pineered several advances. This time they wanted t
figure ut which regin f the brain was respnsible fr recvering frm spinal crd injuries.
Using 3D imaging techniques t map ut the brain activity f mice with these injuries, the team were surprised
t find the regin they were lking fr was in the lateral hypthalamus (外侧下丘脑), a regulatr fr arusal,
feeding and mtivatin. A particular grup f neurns in this regin “appears t be invlved in the recvery f
walking after spinal crd injury,” neurscientist Gregire Curtine said.
Next, the team sught t amplify the signal frm these neurns using a prcedure called deep brain
stimulatin, which is cmmnly used t treat mvement prblems. It invlves a surgen implanting electrdes in
the brain regin, which are cnnected t a device implanted in the patient’s chest. When switched n, the device
sends electrical pulses t the brain.
First, the team tested their thery n mice, finding it immediately imprved walking. The first human
participant f the trial was a wman wh has an incmplete spinal crd injury. Neursurgen Jcelyne Blch said
when the wmen’s device was turned n fr the first time, she said: “I feel my legs.” When they turned up the
electrical current, the wmen said, “I feel the urge t walk.” The wman’s gal was t walk independently withut
a walker. “She reached the gal,” Blch said.
Hwever, mre research is still needed. Because this technique depends n bsting the brain’s signal t the
spinal crd, it depends n hw much signal was getting thrugh in the first place.
28. Why did the researchers perfrm the study this time? ________
A. T see the link between brain and spinal crd. B. T further cnfirm several previus advances.
C. T learn which part in the brain helps recvery. D. T shw hw 3D imaging techniques are used.
29. What des “amplify” underlined in Paragraph 5 prbably mean? ______
A. Weaken. B. Cntrl. C. Display. D. Strengthen.
30. What is Paragraph 6 abut? ________
A. Hw the team carried ut their experiment. B. What results the trial n humans prduces.
第 6页/共 12页
C. Why the wman was chsen as a participant. D. Hw brilliant and successful Jcelyne Blch is.
31. What will the scientists be mst likely t fcus n in the cming study?_
A. The quantity f input electrical signals. B. The expansin f males in the research.
C. The fllw-up bservatin f the wman. D. The applicatin fr the first place winner.

Scientists say newly examined data frm a Chinese rver n Mars adds t evidence that the planet nce had a
large cean.
The rver began its data cllectin missin in an area knwn as Utpia Planitia in May 2021, and stpped
perating abut ne year later, with missin planners saying the pwer system was affected by sand and dust. But
the rver still utlasted its planned missin f three mnths.
Scientists said all the evidence appeared t shw that Utpia Planitia had gelgical features suggesting an
ancient cean castline. The features included trughs (波谷) and channels that may have been frmed by flwing
water. Earlier research that examined data f similar surface features suggested they might have been created by
mud vlcanes, which likely frmed where there had been water r ice.
Scientists based the cnclusin abve n data frm the rver with bservatins frm past satellites rbiting
Mars. B Wu was invlved with the study. He is a planetary scientist at Hng Kng Plytechnic University. Wu
said, “We estimate the flding f the Utpia Planitia n Mars was billins f years ag. The cean surface was
likely frzen in a gelgically shrt perid.” The search fr water n Mars is clsely linked t the search fr signs
f pssible life. Evidence f a past cean raises the pssibility that the planet may have supprted micrbial life.
Scientists said the data shws that the cean seems t have disappeared by abut 3.42 billin years ag. The
study suggests the water that likely filled the Martian cean was “heavily silted (淤塞的),” study c-writer Sergey
Krasilnikv said. Krasilnikv added during the perid when the Martian cean wuld have been active, the planet
“… prbably had a thick, warm atmsphere.” Then, “micrbial life was much mre likely,” he said.
Wu said the new findings d “prvide further evidence t supprt the thery f a Martian cean.” Hwever, he
nted the study desn’t claim that ur findings definitively prve there was an cean n Mars. Such prf, he said,
wuld require a future missin t bring Mars materials back t Earth fr clser research.
32. What d we knw abut the rver?
A. It btained pwer frm sand and dust. B. It wrked in vlcanes and icy water.
C. It fund sea features in Utpia Planitia. D. It perated n Mars until August 2021.
33. Hw did the scientists draw their cnclusin?
第 7页/共 12页
A. By integrating new data and ld data. B. By prving the previus assumptin.
C. By demnstrating a gelgical mdel. D. By gathering the same result f papers.
34. What attitude did B Wu take t the new finding?
A. Unsatisfied. B. Indifferent. C. Cnfident. D. Cautius.
35. What is cnveyed in the last paragraph?
A. There are sme drawbacks abut the study. B. Mre study needs ding n Mars samples.
C. Scientists shuld explre life n Mars next. D. Living cnditins will be created n Mars.
