They als like t use “please” and “thank yu” a lt. In a shp, they will say, “I’d like a packet f crisp, please. Thanks. ” British students thank their teachers, and bsses ften thank their wrkers fr ding their jbs.

I’m a skeptic when it cmes t the benefits f taking vitamins and ther supplements. We swallw far mre than any ther cuntry—yet we’re nt the healthiest flks by far, nr d we live the lngest.
There’s mre bad news fr vitamins this week: Turns ut that taking flic acid(维生素B) and vitamin B12 supplements desn’t prevent heart attacks r death, accrding t a majr new study in the Jurnal f the American Medical Assciatin. It was hped they wuld, since the vitamins d reduce levels f hmcysteine, an amin acid(氨基酸) that is higher in the bld f peple wh have a higher risk f heart disease. In fact, hmcysteine was reduced 30 percent after ne year f treatment in the participants wh tk bth vitamins. But in the fllwing three years, just as many vitamin takers died as thse wh didn’t take the vitamins. Even wrse, the study was stpped early because anther similar study suggested that there may be an increased risk f cancer frm taking B vitamins.
I had been taking a health-fd stre mnster multivitamin (综合维生素剂)fr mnths. Cincidentally, I had been experiencing sme strange numbness in my legs that was starting t scare me. I remember sitting in a lng meeting with my ankles crssed, and when I tried t stand up I crumpled n the flr and hit my chin n the glass cffee table because my leg had gne cmpletely numb and wrthless. As I sat there and shk my leg, I gt that “pins and needles” feeling and sn was OK. But it scared me enugh t make an appintment with a neurlgist, wh suggested an MRI t rule ut multiple sclersis, strke, r a brain tumr(肿).
While I'll never knw fr sure if the vitamins caused my prblem, many, many studies have reminded us that pill frms f vitamins and minerals dn’t prvide the same benefit as getting them frm fd. There’s a lt we dn’t knw abut hw the human bdy wrks. Until we knw mre, I’ m getting mst f my vitamins frm the farmer’s market.
