Tw excellent Chinese scientists, wh were awarded the Medals f the Republic in 2019, are undubtedly the rle mdels f the times.
One f them is Yuan Lngping, knwn as the “Father f Hybrid Rice”. In 1974, he successfully develped a special type f rice which can prduce a 20% higher yield, putting China in the glbal lead in rice prductin. Fr the achievement, he wn the State Supreme Science and Technlgy Award. The crp is nw grwn in mre than 30 cuntries and regins. By 2003, half f China’s rice prductin area was planted with hybrid rice. Yuan set wrld recrds in hybrid rice yields in 1999, 2005, 2011 and 2017, prviding a slutin t wrldwide hunger.
The ther is Tu Yuyu. She is the first Chinese scientist t win the Nbel Prize in Medicine fr the discvery f artemisinin (青蒿素), a grup f drugs used t treat malaria. She and her wrkmates studied ancient Chinese medicine bks and different traditinal treatments. Having dne nearly 200 experiments, they finally succeeded in getting artemisinin. This drug became the standard treatment fr malaria n the Wrld Health Organizatin list f essential medicines. Thanks t Tu’s cntributin, mre than 240 millin peple in Africa have benefited, and ver 1.5 millin lives have been saved since 2000.
