It all started in my 18th year, when I was entertaining my wn imaginatins f success as a writer. I was full f high expectatins, believing that becming an authr was simply a matter f putting my thughts nt paper, sending the wrks t a publisher, and waiting fr fame t cme. Then came the great disappintment. I wrte t famus children’s authr Llyd Alexander, describing my fruitless yearlng effrt at publicatin and asking him fr directin. T my jy, he answered:
“Advice is always very easy t give-but very hard t make it specific and meaningful, since we all have t wrk in ur wn ways. When yu mentin that yu’ve been writing fr a year withut being published, I hasten t tell yu that I wrte seven times that lng withut being published! S, perhaps ne piece f advice is: patience.”
I was encuraged by the idea that a well-regarded writer wuld take the time t ffer a bit f advice t an vercnfident teen. But Mr. Alexander was nt a singular case. I cntinued t reach ut t writers and, truth t tell, I didn’t always receive a reply. But when I did get ne, the cntent was ften filled with cnsideratin and even, at times, affectin (喜爱).
I think f the American pet William Staffrd wh replied t me frm Lake Osweg, Oregn. We actually had an nging crrespndence (通信) fr a while. I wrte t him asking if he wuld be s kind as t autgraph (签名) ne f his bks fr me. If yu had barded a passenger plane in 1950, yu wuld have seen five peple in the cckpit (驾驶舱): tw pilts, a radi peratr, a navigatr and a flight engineer. Over the years, technical advances have gradually remved the need fr the last three, leaving just tw pilts. That has been the nrm (标准) in cmmercial aviatin fr decades.
Hwever, things culd be simplified further — ne f the tw remaining pilts culd sn g. Many military aircraft are already manned by a single pilt, and fr cmmercial aviatin this wuld mean stepping int a brave new wrld.
But hw will airlines make this brave innvatin cme true? One way is t greatly increase autmatin in the cckpit, devting mre tasks t cmputers. Anther is t shift the same tasks frm the cckpit t the grund. “The latter apprach seems t be mre wrkable, at least in the shrt term, because much f what is required already exists,” says Patrick Smith, an airline pilt flying Being 767 aircraft. “A trained grund peratr culd bserve a number f flights at nce and even fully cntrl the plane remtely if needed.”
It’s true that single-pilt peratins culd help airlines save mney, but there is anther reasn which makes them quicken their pace fr this crucial breakthrugh. Being predicts a need fr 600,000 new pilts in the next tw decades, but by sme estimates, there will be a deficit (赤字) f at least 34,000 pilts glbally by 2025. Reducing the number f pilts n sme crews r aircraft culd lessen the impact f this.
Perhaps the biggest barrier t a single pilt will be selling the idea t passengers. In 2019, Dn Hairis, a prfessr at Cventry University, cnducted a survey n the prspect f flying n an airliner with just ne pilt. Just a minrity f participants said they’d be willing t take that flight, and the general idea was that remving a pilt increased the pssibility f accidents. In the study, Harris cncluded that the single-crew airliner wuld be still prbably 20 years away.
8. What is the ptential trend in cmmercial aviatin accrding t the text?
A. It will make air travel ec-friendly.
B. It will switch t single-pilt peratins.
C. It will tighten its flight cntrl fr safety cncerns.
D. It will bring in many military aircraft t the industry.
9. What des Patrick Smith think is a quick way t realize airlines’ brave innvatin?
A. Raising the standards in admitting new pilts.B. Making pilts adaptable t different situatins.
C. Using cmputers t autmate the flight prcess.D. Gaining pilting supprt frm grund peratrs.
10. What des the underlined wrd “this” in paragraph 4 refer t?
A. The shrtage f pilts.B. The need fr new airlines.
C The airlines’ brave innvatin.D. The financial prblem airlines face.
11. What can be inferred frm Dn Harris’ study?
A. The prspect f single-crew airliners is bright.
B. It's urgent that airlines reduce airplane accidents.
C. Passengers are willing t try new types f airplanes.
D. Airlines have a lng way t g befre the innvatin ccurs.
D
Chemicals taken frm sawdust (锯屑) and water can knck ut mre than 99 percent f sme disease-causing micrbes (微生物). That makes the sawdust mix a ptential alternative t current micrbe-killing chemicals.

Shicheng Zhang went searching fr a better ptin. He’s an envirnmental engineer at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Wd cntains many mlecules (分子) that lk like phenl. S Zhang wndered if micrbe-killing chemicals culd be btained frm sawdust thrugh a lw-cst and lw-energy prcess.
He and his fellw researchers cked mixtures f water and sawdust fr ne hur. They heated this sawdust sup under pressure, and then filtered it. Later, they tested hw well the liquid killed ff micrbes. This liquid wiped ut E.cli bacteria—micrbes that can cause fd pisning. The liquid als killed anthrax bacteria. These micrbes cause dangerus infectins. What’s mre, the disinfectant stpped flu viruses frm being infectius.
The researchers als added different amunts f water t the sawdust sup. That let them test hw cncentrated it had t be t knck ut micrbes. Depending n its cncentratin, the mix culd kill mre than 99 percent f the micrbes.
Lking at killed micrbes under a micrscpe revealed sme f the ways the sawdust mix kills. The disinfectant damaged the micrbes’ cell walls. It als may have messed with the micrbes’ prteins and DNA.
Zhang and his fellw researchers didn’t stp at a sawdust disinfectant. They made disinfectants frm ther plant materials, t. Sme f these started as bamb pwder. Others were made using rice plant. Plant materials that are richer in mlecules that release phenl-like cmpunds are best at killing micrbes. One example is crn straw.
12. What may be an advantage f Zhang’s sawdust disinfectant ver existing nes?
A. Being safer and mre effective.
B. Being envirnment-friendly and less expensive.
C. Being less expensive and having mre lasting effect.
D. Being mre effective and having mre lasting effect.
13. What gave Zhang the idea f the sawdust disinfectant?
A. The absence f micrbes in sawdust.B. The phenl-like mlecules in wd.
C. The existence f a greener disinfectant.D. The pssibility f being fd pisned.
14. Hw was Zhang’s research further carried ut?
A. By analyzing data frm previus studies.
B. By identifying the ways different disinfectants kill.
C. By imprving the prcess f dealing with by-prducts.
D. By cmparing the effects f different cncentratins f the mix.
15. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
A. A Public Drive Aims t Greener Disinfectants
B. A Chinese University Grws Micrbe-killing Plants
C. A Disinfectant Made frm Sawdust Kncks ut Micrbes
