The sun is going to enter the orbit of Mercury according to scientific calculations, which will result in the Earth catching on fire. Who will save the world?
This imaginative tale is at the heart of a Chinese sci-fi movie The Wandering Earth.Unlike many American space-themed films where the solution to a challenge Earth faces is always fleeing the planet in spaceships, this time we're taking the Earth with us. The film, which has become the country's most successful film of all time, has offered a different and more ambitious idea.
The “ambition” didn't come from nowhere. For thousands of years, “homeland” has had a soft spot in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old idiom that shows a strong feeling that Chinese people have had for their homeland is “luoyeguigen”, which means returning to one's homeland in old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree.
“What is Chinese sci-fi?” Guo Fan, the film's director, said in an interview.“A vehicle that really expresses our cultural and core can be called Chinese sci-fi. Otherwise, we're just following others and telling the same Hollywood stories.”
And the makers of The Wandering Earth may have chosen the best time to tell its Chinese sci-fi story. The film was released on Feb.5, 2019, the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a time when many people had just made the hard journey back to their hometowns. So to them, there is only one possible way to tell the story. Earth goes wherever humans go, because it's our home.
1. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To give a brief account of the passage. B. To warn people of the coming danger.
C. To explore ways to avoid the problem. D. To introduce the topic of the film.
2. What does the underlined phrase “a different and more ambitious idea” refer to?
A. Fleeing the Earth in spaceships. B. Bringing in huge success.
C. Filling the gap in Chinese sci-fi movies. D. Helping Earth make its escape.
3. Which of the following is not the reason for the success of the film?
A. The rich imagination of the story. B. Hollywood-style space stories.
C. The special cultural background. D. The time chosen to release the film.
4. What is likely to be the best title for the passage?
A. Chinese Sci-fi Keeps Up B. Chinese Sci-fi Backs Down
C. Chinese Sci-fi Sets a New Path D. Chinese Sci-fi Challenges Hollywood

This is a story from a book written in 1875 by a man named Robert Boyd. It's called Trials and Triumphs of Faith. It's put me in tears more than once.
A young musician told us that he was spending several days in a hotel in Paris. One morning he heard, while up in his room, the most wonderful whistling(口哨) he had ever heard. It seemed like the note of a bird, but he thought it could not be that, for there was a perfectly regular tune kept up with much power. Though he was on the third floor, the music came straight up in its sweet melody(旋律) and seemed to fill the whole house.
The young man ran downstairs to get a sight of the wonderful performer, looking every man that he met in the face. At last, he asked the clerk who it was that had such amazing power as a whistler. Laughing at this question, the clerk pointed to a canary(金丝雀) that had been trained to perform in this way and was valued at $300.
“How was that bird trained to sing this way?” the young man asked. The clerk told him that during the training process the bird was nearly starved and shut up in a room that was almost dark. While it was under strict discipline, with its attention undivided, an organ(风琴) was made to play this tune over and over again for days. Hearing nothing else, and taught by its troubles, the poor little bird took up the tune, which it performed so perfectly.
5. What does the author think of the story written by Robert Boyd?
A. Disappointing. B. Moving. C. Dull. D. Funny.
6. Why did the young man run downstairs after hearing the whistling?
A. He loved singing birds. B. He thought the tune quite special.
C. He wanted to see the performer. D. He was disturbed by the noise.
7. What happened to the bird while in training?
A. It was given enough food. B. It stayed away from any people.
C. It was made to fly all the time. D. It heard nothing but the tune.
8. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A “Talented” Whistler B. An Interesting Training
C. The Power of Music D. The Beauty of Life
