W: Ladies and gentlemen,It gives me a great pleasure to be invited here to make a speech. Education is very important in my heart. I grew up in a small village in China. In those days, sixty percent of the villagers couldn’t read and of them women accounted for over a half. So my father opened a night school to teach them how to read. With his help many people learned to read newspapers for the first time.
As his daughter, I know what education means to the people, especially those without it. After generations of hard work, China has come a long way in education. I myself benefit a lot from that progress. Otherwise I would never have become a singer and a professor of music.
Many years ago my father made a small difference in his village. Together we can make a big difference. I was once asked about my Chinese dream. I said I hope all children especially girls can have access to good education.
Thank you very much.

Like everybody else, I was addicted to my devices. When realizing its harm, I decided to make a change.
“I’m doing Tech-Free Sundays now!” I told my mother, on the Saturday night before my no-tech journey started. “Oh,” she said. “So are you giving up, like, the wheel?” I defined my terms. No: computer, phone, iPad. No: email, Twitter, Instagram. Yes: wheels, modern medicine.
But when I woke up in the morning, I failed. The problem was my work: I needed to meet a deadline. I thought I could just use the computer for work, and wouldn’t check Twitter. And I didn’t, for many hours. And then I did. It was right there! And though I checked it very briefly, just in case anyone was mad at me, the spell (咒语) was broken.
But the beautiful thing about Sundays is that there is always another one. The next week, I changed my approach: no tech, at all. This time, I was prepared. On Saturday, I made a list of everything I wanted to accomplish over the weekend, and then worked my way through all the parts that require technology. And then I put my phone down, and when I woke up on Tech-Free Sunday, I did not pick it up again.
Instead, I finish a book—one with paper! Do you know how pleasurable it is to read a book by touching it? It is a delight, like petting a very literary cat. However, the trouble came when I went to meet a friend. I was running late, but had no way to tell her because my phone was at home.
Was I relaxed on such a Sunday? It was an unfamiliar feeling, but I was. I felt a sense of control over my life. But because life is nothing if not a learning process, the next weekend, I told everyone who might need to get in touch with me that I would not be reachable on Sunday.
24. What can we infer from the author’s conversation with her mother?
A. The author’s mother agreed with her decision.
B. The author wouldn’t drive on Tech-Free Sundays.
C. The author wouldn’t refuse all modern technology.
D. The author’s mother was unfamiliar with technological terms.
25. What happened on the first Tech-Free Sunday?
A. The author broke a spell happily.
B. The author got annoyed by others.
C. The author got her computer checked.
D. The author went against her original wish.
26. How did the author feel about her Tech-Free decision finally?
A. Satisfied. B. Tired. C. Disappointed. D. Hesitant.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. I Realized the Harm of Devices
B. I Tried Going Tech-Free on Sundays
C. Being Addicted to Devices Is Harmful
D. “Tech-Free Sundays” Become Popular
C 25. D 26. A 27. B

根据第三段“I thought I could just use the computer for work, and wouldn’t check Twitter. And I didn’t, for many hours. And then I did. It was right there! And though I checked it very briefly, just in case anyone was mad at me, the spell (咒语) was broken.”(我以为我可以用电脑工作,而不会查看推特。
根据第五段“Instead, I finish a book—one with paper! Do you know how pleasurable it is to read a book by touching it? It is a delight, like petting a very literary cat. ”(相反,我看完了一本纸质书!你知道触摸一本书是多么令人愉快吗?这是一种享受,就像抚摸一只非常有文学气息的猫一样)和第六段的“ I felt a sense of control over my life. Eggs are a common ingredient. They’re at the center of the age-old question, “What came first, the chicken or the egg?” and the classic idiom, “Egg someone on.” And, most fascinatingly, they’re the subjects of art, film and fashion.
From Jean-Baptiste Greuze’s painting “Broken Eggs” and Claude Monet’s painting “Still Life with Eggs” to Giovanni Battista Recco’s “Still Life with Chickens and Eggs”, there’s no shortage of egg illustrations. Within the field of art, eggs are a complex theme due to their significance in Christian cultures and mythology.
Simply put, an egg is more than just food—it is “a symbol and a shape-shifter.. . an industry and an inspiration, a cross-cultural expression of rebirth and potential,” according to a book called “The Gourmand’s Egg. A Collection of Stories and Recipes”.
Written by David Lane and Marina Tweed of the contemporary food and culture journal “The Gourmand”, the latest publication explores this phenomenon through a collection of images, stories and recipes focused on eggs. There’s also a section devoted to egg accessories, further illustrating how the egg became so remarkable in culture.
Perhaps the earliest mythological subject of eggs is the world egg, which thinks that the universe came into existence via a hatched (孵化) egg. Eggs then became a symbol of celebration. This eventually became the basis of classic Easter traditions.
Eggs were first showcased in art during the Renaissance. Take for example Piero della Francesca’s Breru Madonna, in which the hanging egg is a symbol of both creation and purity. There’s also Hieronymous Bosch’s oil painting “The Garden of Earthly Delights”, which shows yet another floating unhatched egg that is “a symbol of unrealized hope, or hidden power.”
As “The Gourmand’s Egg” wrote, “The egg is a cinematic chameleon(变色龙). It has been a symbol of brotherly love, a Freudian red flag, a symbol of life. ”
Additionally, “as in so many pictures, the egg often features not only as an everyday foodstuff but as a container of countless meanings.”
28. Why does the author list some paintings in paragraph 2?
A. To appeal to the readers’ attention.
B. To give examples of best painted eggs.
C. To prove there are many paintings about eggs.
D. To show the egg subject makes many famous paintings.
29. What is covered in David Lane and Marina Tweed’s new book?
A. The culture of eggs.
B. Skills of egg hatching.
C. The kinds of eggs.
D. Types of egg containers.
30. What does the egg stand for in Bosch’s painting?
A. Life. B. Potential. C. Love. D. Purity.
31. What is the author’s purpose of writing this text?
A. To sell a newly-published book.
B. To discuss famous paintings about eggs.
C. To introduce different egg cooking techniques.
D. To show the complex meaning of eggs in works of art.

Two years ago, enormous fires swept through some 46 million acres of forest in Russia, the country’s worst fire season on record. Now, researchers have a clearer sense of just how significant the 2021 boreal(北方的)forest fires were in terms of emissions. The fires produced more planet-heating carbon dioxide than any other extreme fire event that has occurred since the turn of the 21st century, according to a study.
Boreal forests grow where it is very cold. The trees that live in this type of forest grow slowly and seal (封存) carbon in their trunks and roots for hundreds of years, comprising a collection of trapped emissions that researchers call a carbon sink. But rising temperatures and related drought in these historically cool regions have led to an increase in extreme wildfire activity and threaten to release the carbon stored in the trees that grow there, transforming a carbon sink into a carbon source.
In all, fires in boreal forests released the carbon sink and produced nearly half a billion metric tons of carbon in 2021.That’s more carbon than the entire continent of Australia produced the same year, though some of the emissions produced by the fires will be sucked back up as forests regrow.
The researchers obtained the data for their study by tracking concentrations of emissions in the atmosphere using satellites, and then they put that information into a computer model to determine where, geographically, those emissions came from. They found that boreal forests, which typically produce about 10 percent of the globe’s annual wildfire emissions, accounted for 23 percent of the world’s wildfire emissions in 2021—more than twice as much as normal.
Canadell, who led the study, is most concerned about the study’s main takeaway; Boreal forests have served an important and underappreciated role in sequestering carbon emissions, but climate change threatens to release that carbon. “We need to be very careful with these systems in terms of their future development,” he said.
32. What is the function of paragraph 2?
A. To explain the source of carbon.
B. To illustrate two scientific concepts.
C. To indicate the seriousness of the fire.
D. To show the importance of boreal forests.
33. How did the scientists get needed data?
A. By employing technology.
B. By searching on the website.
C. By analyzing previous data.
D. By turning to the firefighters.
34. What does the underlined word “sequestering” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Assessing. B. Increasing. C. Monitoring. D. Preventing.
35. What is mainly talked about in the text?
A. The reasons for the forest fires in the north.
B. The impact of the 2021 boreal forest fires.
C. The link between fires and carbon dioxide.
D. The increasingly growing carbon emissions.
A 33. A 34. D 35. B
根据第一段“The fires produced more planet-heating carbon dioxide than any other extreme fire event that has occurred since the turn of the 21st century, according to a study.”(根据一项研究,自21世纪之交以来,火灾产生的地球加热二氧化碳比任何其他极端火灾事件都多。)及第二段“Boreal forests grow where it is very cold. The trees that live in this type of forest grow slowly and seal carbon in their trunks and roots for hundreds of years, comprising a collection of trapped emissions that researchers call a carbon sink.”(北方的森林生长在非常寒冷的地方。 故选A项。
根据第四段中“The researchers obtained the data for their study by tracking concentrations of emissions in the atmosphere using satellites, and then they put that information into a computer model to determine where, geographically, those emissions came from.”(研究人员通过使用卫星跟踪大气中的排放浓度来获得研究数据,然后将这些信息输入计算机模型,以确定这些排放在地理上来自何处。) 故选A项。
根据文章第二段“But rising temperatures and related drought in these historically cool regions have led to an increase in extreme wildfire activity and threaten to release the carbon stored in the trees that grow there, transforming a carbon sink into a carbon source.”(但是,在这些历史上凉爽的地区,气温上升和相关的干旱导致了极端野火活动的增加,并有可能释放储存在那里生长的树木中的碳,将碳汇转化为碳源。)
根据第一段“Two years ago, enormous fires swept through some 46 million acres of forest in Russia, the country’s worst fire season on record. Now, researchers have a clearer sense of just how significant the 2021 boreal(北方的)forest fires were in terms of emissions.”(两年前,大火席卷了俄罗斯约4600万英亩的森林,这是该国有记录以来最严重的火灾季节。

Drink one extra glass of water a day. It’s nothing new that there are health benefits to drinking more water. ____37____ If plain water isn’t your favorite, you can add flavor to your water to help up your intake.
Correct your posture. When you were a kid, have your parents ever yelled at you for having bad posture? Well, the bad news is that they were right. ____38____ Not only that, but good posture prevents backache. You can try to leave yourself a note to sit up straight until it becomes an unconscious habit. Walking with your shoulders back and head held high can also make you feel good about yourself.
____39____ Solid sleep doesn’t just give you more energy, it can also help with healthy eating goals. If you have difficulty falling asleep, try to head to bed thirty minutes earlier than your usual time. Wind down with a book. You’ll be falling asleep in no time.
Remember that building new healthy habits can take some time and it’s OK to treat yourself to avoid feeling deprived (剥夺). Stay focused on your goal. ____40____

My Own Beat
My pulse quickened as my feet took me closer and closer to the door. In my head, I could hear the words my kids kept telling me, “Do it, Mom. You never do anything for yourself. Just follow your dream.” I felt my lungs filled with air and released it.
“What are you doing here? You’re a single mom of five. You’re fifty years old!” My thoughts were fighting with my kids’ words. Even so, it was as if I had no control over my feet. As if they were being urged along from somewhere deep inside me.
Finally I gathered my courage, stepped into the hall and signed up for drum classes, which was my childhood dream.
Wednesday came, and along with it my first drum lesson. I walked through the door and headed directly to the seating area in the back. My hands kept fidgeting (动来动去) with the sticks. I kept nervously looking at the time. I tried to slow down my breath. I knew the teacher would say I was not the right type of person to play the drums. I turned around to see an older man looking at me.
“Stephanie? I’m Mike, the drum teacher,” he said.
People make me nervous. That’s the way I’ve always been. But Mike had a very calm manner about him, so I relaxed just slightly. Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he complimented me on how well I held the sticks and followed along with him.
“You are fine. I see so much potential in you,” he told me.
Soon my thirty-minute lesson is over. Walking back to my car, I felt full of excitement and energy. I thought of how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and watched proudly as they bravely went in front of judges and audiences.
Now it felt scary and amazing at the same time to follow my dream and do something that was purely for my enjoyment, something just for me. Maybe one day I would have the chance to stand on the stage.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I started the car and couldn’t wait to go back home to tell my kids about my class.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seeing my devotion and progress, Mike convinced me to play in a concert.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I started the car and couldn’t wait to go back home to tell my kids about my class. When I stepped into the house, my kids yelled, “Did you do it?” “How was everything going?” Then they saw my excitement and the drumsticks in my hand. They started jumping up and down and then came to hug me. In the following days, I practiced as much as I could and my techniques improved greatly. When I played, I became so focused on the drums that it was as if my expression of who I was came out with every beat and rhythm.
Seeing my devotion and progress, Mike convinced me to play in a concert. When I told my children the news, they felt really happy for me, promising they would go with me. The big day soon came. When waiting for my turn, I felt a little nervous but thinking of my kids helped me to find strength within me. Walking up on the small stage, I breathed deeply and sat at the drum set. When I finished, everyone was clapping and cheering for me. I did it!
