Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest. But a new study shows it may become grassland in a few years. Climate change and human activities make it “sick”. Usually, the rainforest can fix itself, but now it feels too “tired” to get better.
Why is the Amazon rainforest “sick”?
The Amazon rainforest is one of the world’s wettest places. Since 2005, three droughts have hit the rainforest. They were caused by climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, they can easily catch fire!
On top of this, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They burn the forest to make farmland. They clear trees to find minerals. All these activities have caused about 17% of the rain forest to disappear.
What will happen if we lose it?
The Amazon rainforest is like the lungs of our planet. The rich planet take CO₂ out of the air and make O₂. They make about 20% of the planet’s O₂. If the Amazon forest “dies”, there will be more CO₂ and our earth will become even hotter.
The Amazon rainforest is also home to over 3 million animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. Perhaps they would disappear.
42.What does the new study show?
A.The Amazon rainforest was once grassland.
B.Rainforests can speed up climate change.
C.The Amazon rainforest may become grassland in the future.
D.Many people enjoy activities in the Amazon forest.
43.How do droughts make the Amazon rainforest “sick”?

③They make grass in the forest grow faster.
④They make it easier for the forest to catch fire.
A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.①④
44.Why is the Amazon rainforest called “the lungs of the earth”?
A.Because it makes about one-fifth of the earth’s O₂.
B.Because it has 17% of the earth’s minerals.
C.Because the air there is the freshest and cleanest.
D.Because it’s the coolest place on the earth.

While Mr. Huggins was collecting the papers, he noticed that Nancy, a student from a small village, I couldn’t make up my mind because they are so many. Mr. Huggins said, “Well, we can hear, we can touch, we can feel, we can love and we can love”
Hearing this, the whole class couldn’t help laughing. “OK, listen up, actually.” The classroom got quiet. The things on her list may appear simple, but they are truly wonderful gifts of nature. He continued. “They are indisputable seven wonders of the world.”

Research finds that being kind makes us happy and encourages stronger social connections. Now, a new study suggests we can get some of these advantages simply by recalling such things we did in the past.
Researchers from the University of California carried out a three-day experiment with 532 students. The students were given one of the four tasks by chance: 1. Performing acts of kindness; 2. Recalling acts of kindness they did in the past; 3. Performing and recalling acts of kindness; 4. Neither performing nor recalling acts of kindness.
On Day One, students in groups 1 and 3 were asked to perform three acts of kindness in the next 24 hours. On Day Two, students in groups 2 and 3 were asked to recall acts of kindness they did before the experiment. On each of the three days, the students attended a survey that learned about their positive (积极的) and negative (消极的) feelings and their life satisfaction.
The researchers found that the students in the first three groups saw a small increase in their happiness. They reported an increase in positive feelings and life satisfaction and a decrease in negative feelings. For the students in Group 4, they did nothing and didn’t have any increase in their happiness.
You might imagine that the students who both performed and recalled acts of kindness would be the happiest, but doing both didn’t seem to provide additional (额外的) advantages. Does this mean we can simply sit at home and think about our past kindness?
“We don’t suggest that people should stop being kind to others. In fact, people should continue to do acts of kindness to create more wonderful memories,” the researchers wrote.
49.What can we know from Paragraph 1?
A.Being kind is good for us. B.Most people are kind to others.

A.They gave up their task quickly. B.They were unpopular with others.
C.They enjoyed the highest life satisfaction. D.They experienced the least happiness.
52.Which of the following ideas would the researchers agree with?
A.We should only be kind to our friends. B.Stop thinking about our past kindness.
C.Keep on performing acts of kindness. D.Wonderful memories are difficult to create.

Almost everyone likes flowers. Of all kinds of beautiful flowers, I like lotuses best. Perhaps you wonder why I like lotuses more than the others. A good example around me
There are many good examples around me. My classmate Wang Fan is one of them.
It was a rainy day. Hurrying to return home, everyone seemed to forget to do the cleaning. Seeing this, Wang Fan stayed and started to sweep the floor quietly. I felt surprised because he wasn’t on duty! But he just said he was glad to do something for us. Moved by his words, I thought I should care more about others and the class.
Good examples are not far away from us. They are just common people who do common things. These things my be small but necessary and meaningful. Good examples always have something for us to learn from and warm others in their own way.
