I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race
values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy
studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship
between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let
her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum
would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old
folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a
great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
24. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A. He is content with his scholastic achievements.
B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C. His views on social values are well known.
D. His good grades got him a good job.
25. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship?
A. A judge. B. A helper. C. A monitor. D. A supporter.
26. What is the greatest accomplishment for the author?
A. The success in exams.
B. The contribution to volunteering.
C. The recovery of confidence in life.
D. The work in community service.
27. Why does the author want to major in social work at university?
A. To gain a well-paid job.
B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To better help the disadvantaged.
D. To meet his grandparents’ expectations.

Have you ever thrown a camel? Camels are large and heavy animals, so it would
4
be hard to do so. But in the French-speaking Democratic Republic of the Congo, “to throw a camel” is a way of saying “to make a spelling mistake”. In the past, a phrase like that was not accepted by the French government as an official French term. But recently, the French Ministry of Culture worked on a new kind of dictionary that accepts the idea that many people in other countries and regions speak the language. The language has changed over time and is different in places like Ivory Coast in West Africa or Quebec in Canada, compared to how it is in Paris.
The new online French dictionary includes new French words from around the
world. It was released ( 发 布 ) on March 18 — just in time for International Francophonie Day on March 20. After its release, it is updated (更新) on a regular basis. It now contains about 600,000 terms. The French Culture Minister says the dictionary is not just for France’s 67 million citizens, but for the 300 million French speakers worldwide.
Supporters say the new dictionary is more democratic (大众化的) than earlier French dictionaries that only showed the way highly educated French people spoke. Official dictionaries produced by the French Academy in Paris were first published hundreds of years ago and are regularly updated. The online dictionary, however, has
a new part you cannot find in a book. If you live in Senegal, for example, you can
search the dictionary, and it will give you the meaning of a word based on its use in that country.
“The French no longer have a monopoly (独占) on French,” a French magazine
that supports the dictionary wrote recently. “And that is good news”.
28. What do we know about the phrase “to throw a camel”?
A. It tells us camels are too large to be thrown.
B. It can be found in an ancient French dictionary.
C. It is a phrase still not accepted by the French government.
D. It can be used when you see someone makes a spelling mistake.
29. How is the online French dictionary different from other dictionaries?
A. It needs updating regularly. B. It is mainly for non-French speakers.
C. It takes in worldwide French usages. D. It includes few official French terms.
30. What do the supporters think of the dictionary?
A. It helps spread standard French. B.It’ll attract more people to learn French.
C. It’ll benefit French’s development. D. It brings 300 million French speakers.
31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Culture. B. Opinion. C. Technology. D. Lifestyle.

Jo said, “Teddy was only a boy and soon got over his love for me.”
“Good,” the Professor said. “I have waited so long and am selfish with my love for you.”
He showed her a piece of worn paper from his pocket. She saw that it was one of the
poems she had written and had published in a newspaper. It was about Jo and each of her sisters.
He said that the verse about her, where she
mentioned being sad and lonely, showed him she would find comfort in true love. He explained that he had to keep his promise to go and teach. He asked if she could wait for him. She said that she could, knowing they loved one another.

There’s a question about maths you can hear in high schools all around the world,
“Why on earth are we learning something that we’ll never use in real life?” 36
Computers can help us do the maths, and the rest of the topics will only be useful for the expert-to-be. So why do we study maths at all?
The teacher might answer, “Classes aren’t supposed to teach you formulas (公
式). 37 ” It is an answer I can totally agree with, but how does maths “teach you
to think”?
38 In many ways, explaining how you get to the result is more important
than the result itself. Using mathematical logic (逻辑) to solve problems provides just the right tools.
Make sure you understand the problem before trying to solve it. 39 Or, you
can work backwards. When the job is to prove a given supposition (推测), examining the result might help in finding the evidence.
In real life, setting goals can be a powerful tool for finding a way to reach them.
Write the question down, and keep making it simple until it becomes clear. 40
A. Maths is supposed to teach you to think.
B. If you can’t solve the problem, solve a simpler one.
C. A great deal of high school maths has little practical use.
D. Solution lies in using mathematical tools for real-life problems.
E. Maths helps broaden students’ view instead of sharpening mind.
F. Solving difficult problems is the way we’ll make use of maths in real life.
G. The next time you see a difficult real-life problem, use the tips above.

A Bowl of Noodles
Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of he scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even
9
possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want
to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me...” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man,
“Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. Jenny thanked the man and started to gobblle ( 狼吞虎咽 ) up the delicious food...then cried silently.
“What is it? ”asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was moved by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so mean and cruel!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave
you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times that she has cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her? ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother’s
familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for
her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.
Paragraph 1:
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath._______________________
Paragraph 2:
Her mother came back home, which called her mind back._________________
