    1.2023届福建省厦门一中高三下学期二模试题

Art exploration is not only fun and entertaining, but also educational. It allows youth to practice a wide range of skills that are useful not only for life, but also for learning. Here are some tips for growing your up-and-coming artist.

Talk with your child about their work. ____16____. When we ask “What is it?”, we are saying that it should look like something we’d recognize. Instead, ask open-ended questions like “Tell me about your picture.” You can also describe specific things your child is doing by saying things such as, “You’re making short lines. I see you are using red, green and blue.”

Do what your child does. Instead of drawing your own picture, sit down with your child and do their actions. ____17____. If your child concentrates on what you are drawing or how “good” your picture is, they are less likely to be imaginative and creative on their own.

____18____. Instead of sitting down with a specific plan or outcome in mind, let your child explore, experiment and use their imaginations. They might make a big mess or change their mind several times-this is all part of the creative process.

Support, don’t lead. Have you ever noticed that activities become much less fun when they are told by someone else?  ____19____. So let them decide what materials they want to use and how and when to use them. Maybe they want to peel () the paper off a crayon and use it lengthwise on the paper, instead of writing with the tip.

Get your child creating and learning. ____20____.

AIt is the same case with kids

    BKeep the process open-ended

CDon’t shift their focus onto their drawings

DIt’s often hard to interpret a child’s drawings

EFocus on the product, not the complex process

FAll you’ll need is a paintbrush and an open mind

GMake big or small lines, or practice drawing circles

We are masters of distraction especially when we feel an uncomfortable emotion surfacing. And our society makes it easier than ever. ____16____ . Those range from videos on TikTok to online shopping.

But does distraction really help deal with emotions? Or does it merely worsen the problem? ____17____. In some ways it can help, and oftentimes distraction avoids the root of the problem.

In the loud world in which we live nowadays, avoiding an emotion is easier than processing it. During the sequencing of an emotion, distraction occurs when we first notice it. The emotion in question causes physiological changes and often causes action. ____18____. It isn’t always a bad thing. There’s pretty good evidence that distraction can help down regulate the anxiety around a negative emotion.

____19____ There are longer mood states that last days or months, although most emotions only last a’ few minutes before they pass. That’s why, if you’re seeking long-term solutions, learning to process emotions is the only way. When you slow down and make space for your emotions, you can start to process them.

Jacobs Hendel, a psychotherapist, uses a process, which involves connecting your feet to the floor, deep belly breathing, slowing down and then identifying where different emotions are felt in the body. ____20____ -once anxiety goes down, you can identify the other emotions that are coming up in your body. If the same emotions keep coming up and causing you stress, learning to sit with them and work through them. Facing your emotions may help you see that they aren’t as scary as you thought.

AAccording to experts, the answer is a mixed bag

BGrabbing your phone isn’t necessarily a bad thing

CAnd feeling them in the body is a good place to start

DWe feel like emotions are going to get bigger when we focus on them

EFor example, if you’re sad, you draw back; if you’re angry, you approach

FBut distraction isn’t a true fix either, because it only works in the short-term

GOnce a negative emotion sets in, we may reach for various digital distractions

We often idealize the act of cooking. In my mind’s eye, I can see myself swanning through the kitchen with smooth hair as I stir a pot of spaghetti in slow motion. _16_As the appointed chef of my household, making dinners after a long day’s work is an annoying chore (杂务).

So, when we knew about a weekly meal delivery service, I jumped at the chance. ______  Each meal’s ingredients came wrapped up in a separate paper bag, each labelled with a recipe card.

The actual cooking was easier, too. I was delighted by pre-processed vegetables and properly-portioned dressings. Think about the hunt for recipes, the cuts and burns, and the spilled bottle of olive oil. _17_ .

A few weeks into our subscription, however, I realised that gone with the frustration of cooking was its joy. _18_ You choose ingredients from the supermarket shelves. You wash them, peel them, chop them, season them or combine them. You see them transform from one thing into another over the process. Remove that process and what are you left with?

_19_ For busy families who couldn’t afford the connection with food, these boxes offer fresh, healthy, waste-free meals that require minimal effort and time. But if I have the time and energy to indulge in that luxury, I think it’s worth doing.

AThese were all things of the past.

BIn fact, cooking can connect you with your food.

CIn practice, there is rarely anything ideal about cooking.

DCooking is messy, tiring, and most of the time, annoying.

ESoon came our box of ingredients that made everything easier.

FSo clean and ready, the ingredients no longer look or feel like food.

GOf course, I do realise the practical advantages of meal subscription boxes.

    4.2023届湖南省九校联盟第二次联考英语试题

If you suffer from social anxiety, you will fear certain situations. Some fear speaking in front of groups of people, while others fear going to parties or other types of social events. In whichever situation your fear arises, you’ll probably experience sweating, flushing, feeling your heart race, or other symptoms of anxiety. __16__

    Number one: Deep muscle relaxation.

Learning to physically relax is one of the best ways to combat anxiety. __17__ For deep muscle relaxation, you will tense and then relax the major muscle groups of your body, beginning with your feet and working your way towards your head and face.

    Number Two: Slow breathing.

__18__ When you’re anxious, your breathing becomes faster and more shallow and as a result, you’ll feel light-headed and dizzy, bringing on more anxiety. Learning to breathe slower and more regularly through your nose will help you calm down.

    Number Three: Visualization.

The key to visualization is to remember a place where you felt safe and comfortable. Once you remember this place, get a picture of it in your mind so clearly that you can feel, see, smell and even taste that place. __19__

    Number Four: __20__

Most people with social anxiety want to hide, avoid, or run away from whatever they’re scared of. But by facing your anxiety instead you’ll find that it is usually something you can tolerate after a few exposures. When using this method, focus on what’s going on around you instead of what’s going through your mind. That should help you distract yourself from those anxious thoughts.

    AFacing your anxiety.

    BControlling your thoughts.

    CThis takes practice and patience.

DIt’s impossible to feel both relaxed and anxious.

EThis technique will help you better handle the situation of being desperate.

FWhatever your symptoms, there are things you can do to deal with your social anxiety.

GControlling your breathing when you suffer anxiety is another good way to deal with your emotions.

Do you feel like an outsider, like you don’t belong anywhere or that you just don’t fit in? Here are some tips for you to deal with these feelings.

____16____ Often it’s really only your own mind and emotions that tell you that you don’t fit in. Actually, you may fit in fine. Feeling like you don’t belong isn’t always a bad thing either. Remember, it’s the people that are unique in this world that make the biggest impact. You don’t want to change yourself just to fit in with a certain group of people. ____17____ They end up wanting to gain approval from others and end up losing themselves in the process.

Let go of past anger. We’re so angry at people that we can’t relate to anyone or only expect the worst from others. Once I figured out how to let go of my past, I became much more comfortable being me. ____18____ Maybe because I didn’t care as much what they thought of me but more likely just because I think people are more affected by the “aura” you give off.

Focus on your wants and desires. Instead of focusing on the problem that you don’t feel like you fit in, try turning it around. What do you want to explore, what goals do you have, or what do you want to learn? ____19____ There are so many incredible and inspiring things in this world to explore. Focus on the positive and the beauty of the world rather than getting caught up in a negative situation.

The key to handling the situation of “I feel like an outsider” is really all in how you react to that feeling. ____20____ As those who have gone through the same feelings show, there can definitely be an advantage to being unique. You truly are special and there is no one else quite like you. You just need to be willing to share the real you with the world.

ADon’t be so hard on yourself.

BAppreciate what makes you so unique.

CThat’s where a number of people go wrong.

DAsk yourself these questions and then go and do it.

EI found it was easier to get along with other people.

FYou have so much more to offer by being true to yourself.

GYou can beat yourself up over it or you can become stronger for it.

Like it or love it, social media is a major part of life. Teens spend more than half of their waking hours online. They use some of that time to post pictures and create profiles on social media accounts. ____16____

Clicking on a thumbs-up or a heart icon is an easy way to stay in touch. ____17____ Some social media sites use those likes to determine how many people eventually see a post. One with many likes is more likely to be seen-and to get even more likes.

What’s more, viewing posts with a lot of likes activates the reward system in our brain. ____18____ For example, posts related to alcohol may encourage teens to drink. That means that what you like online has the power to influence not just what others like, but even what they do.

____19____ And not always in a good way. For example, in one 2011 study, teens doing a driving task in a lab took more risks when their friends were around. Researchers also looked at the teens’ brains during this task. They saw activity in a part of the brain that’s involved in rewards, which suggests the teens were changing their behavior to try to get social approval.

Joining social media can give people a sense of being in the know. But posts may exaggerate (夸大) how well our friends and others are feeling, making them appear much happier than we are. ____20____

AIt can also lower the viewer’s self-control.

BA popular post doesn’t necessarily mean it is a quality post.

CIt’s no surprise: Feedback from peers affects how teens behave.

DTheir brains respond to those likes by turning on the reward center.

EAnd that can, inappropriately, make us feel less successful than them.

FBut those “likes” can have power that goes beyond a simple connection.

GMost of what they do is read and respond to posts by friends and family.

There’s a lot to cope with when you go off to university. ____36____ For most students, a completely new environment is waiting to be explored.

We recently drove our daughter Evie 150 miles to start life as a fresher. It was a struggle to find the car park, let alone explore the huge campus. Although we knew she had flatmates and phone apps to get her to fit in, the challenge ahead was clear—to find her way in an unfamiliar world. ____37____

In a recent study, volunteers walked around a virtual forest environment. Then some of them took the same walk again, while others explored a different forest.___38___ According to the researchers, that was because exploring the new environment stimulated their dopamine (多巴胺) system—setting up their brains for memorizing things. Thus, they scored higher.

So leaving home to study makes perfect sense. ____39____ But we may all be able to gain some of the benefits, even if it’s just by stimulating our senses and challenging our thinking skills. Here are three things to try:

◆ Go somewhere new to tackle an upcoming learning task—like memorizing a speech in the library, or revising for an exam in a park—and take an unfamiliar route to get there.

____40____To warm yourself up for learning, picture a city you know well, but imagine you’re tapped in a part of it that you’ve never visited. Then try to visualize exactly how you’ll get out.

◆ Play video games that get you moving through new landscapes. Then see whether it improves your success with other learning tasks, like practising a dance or mastering phrases for a foreign trip.

    AGet lost in your imagination.

BPrepare yourself for a city tour.

CBut exploring places as such is beneficial to memory.

DPeople prove to be more adaptable after new experience.

EThe latter group performed better in memory tests straight after.

FThere are new friends to meet and new responsibilities to accept.

GYoung minds seem to gain most from being in strange surroundings.

Searching for a new cat to add to your family? If your home already has a cat, you may wonder how your cat will welcome a new partner. ____16____Continue reading for tips on how to do that.

Your existing cat’s needs come first. ____17____Does your cat prefer female cats over male cats? If he/ she enjoys the company of female cats, adopting a female cat can help. If you adopt a young kitten as a companion for your older cat, it can work well as kittens get along with a cat of any age.

Shower your existing cat with extra attention. Cats can be territorial when it comes to their space; the same can be true for their owners as well. ____18____Giving your cat more hugs and care during the introduction of a new cat can help ease his/ her bad feeling. This also helps your cat accept and trust the new one more quickly.

____19____ When you bring your new cat home, it’s best to keep the cats in different rooms. This way they won’t try to defend their territory. Each should have their own space with bowls and cat furniture so he/ she don’t feel the need to compete. And do spend time with the new cat as he/ she can also be stressed in a new environment.

Introduce the new cat slowly. Your cats will have the chance to get used to each other’s smell through the door. When they seem interested in meeting, you can bring one into the other’s territory._______20_______If you notice either of the cats getting uncomfortable, separate them.

    ASeparate the cats initially.

BMake sure your cat feels at home.

CDo this at least a few days after the new cat arrives.

DThink about your existing cat’s personality and habits.

EYour cat can get envious of a newcomer easily if feeling ignored.

FGive both cats a special treat when they first meet to encourage peace.

GThere is a process to make the change less stressful for both you and the cats.

    Covid-19 and Climate Change

The World Health Organization officially declared a pandemic on 11 March 2020. This began a sudden drop in human activity, as much of the world went into lockdown and factories stopped operating, cars kept their engines off and planes were grounded. ___16___ Here are three things climate scientists learned.

Climate science can operate in real time.

The pandemic made scientists think about how to monitor greenhouse gas emissions-carbon dioxide in particular—in real time. ___17___ In other words, if we knew what the emissions were from various economic sectors or countries before the pandemic, and we knew by how much activity had fallen, we could assume that their emissions had fallen by the same amount.

No dramatic effects on climate change happen.

___18___ Despite the clear and quiet skies, researchers found that lockdown actually had a slight warming effect in spring 2020. Looking further ahead to 2030, simple models have estimated that global temperatures will only be around 0.01℃ lower as a result of Covid-19.

    ___19___

We need to find ways to reduce emissions without the economic and social impacts of lockdown. Scientists have estimated that investing just 1.2% of global GDP in economic recovery packages could mean the difference between keeping global temperature rise below 1.5%, and a future where we are facing much more severe impacts—and higher costs. It’s essential that strong climate action is integrated into future investments. ___20___

    AThere have been many changes.

BThis isn’t a plan for climate action.

CThe risks may seem highbut the potential rewards are far higher.

DThey used information on lockdown as a mirror for global emissions.

EThis period has brought some entirely new and sometimes unexpected insights.

FUnfortunately, green investment is not being made at anything like the level needed.

GIn the long term, the pandemic will have less effect on efforts to tackle climate change.

___17___ By having a rich understanding of the topic, you will be better able to think of innovative solutions to problems.

    Take risks

When it comes to building your creative skills, you must be willing to take risks to improve your abilities. ___19___, you will still be improving your creative talents and building skills that will serve you well in the future. For example, sharing your work in a creative writing course might feel frightening, but the comments you receive from classmates and teachers can be valuable.

    ___20___

Never expect creativity to just happen. Look for new sources of inspiration that will give you fresh ideas and motivate you to get unique answers to questions. Read a book, visit a museum, listen to your favorite music or engage in a lively debate with a friend.

    ALook for inspiration.

    BBrainstorm new ideas.

CFind time each day to develop your skills.
