Jenifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor's degree.
Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling.
Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids. Jenifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times.
Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. Jennifer sacrificed(牺牲)to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study. ''Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers,'' she says. However, her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family-and that's pretty powerful.
    24. What did Jennifer do after high school?
    A. She helped her dad with his work.
    B. She ran the family farm on her own.
    C. She supported herself through college.
    D. She taught her sisters and brothers at home.
    25. Why did Jennifer choose the program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield?
    A. To take care of her kids easily. B. To learn from the best nurses.
    C. To save money for her parents. D. To find a well-paid job there.
    26. What did Jennifer sacrifice to achieve her goal?
    A. Her health. B. Her time with family.
    C. Her reputation. D. Her chance of promotion.
    27. What can we learn from Jenifer's story?
    A. Time is money. B. Love breaks down barriers.
    C. Hard work pays off. D. Education is the key to success.
    C
In my everyday life, I am on an ongoing journey to figure out different ways to reduce my carbon footprint on the planet. A carbon footprint is the measure of influence our activities have on the environment, in particular climate change. It is calculated by the amount of greenhouse gas we produce in our daily lives. Fortunately, nowadays it is much easier to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices than, let's say, 20 years ago. But one question has been on my mind a lot lately: is it better to buy new eco-friendly products or used traditionally produced goods?
After doing some research, I have decided that some things are better new and others are better used. Let me try to explain.
A carbon footprint is made up of two parts, the primary footprint and the secondary footprint. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions(排放)of carbon dioxide(CO2)from the burning of fuels, including household energy consumption and transportation. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use-those related to their production and breakdown.
Based on this understanding, we have a good deal of control and responsibility over our carbon footprint. Things like dishes, clothes and furniture fall into the “secondary footprint” group, so less is more and we can focus on finding used goods to avoid the added production. However, for the car and the other appliances(设备)that we need we can go with new, energy-saving models. I heard somewhere that electronics and appliances give off 90% of their carbon footprint after they leave the factory. So it seems most reasonable to go for the energy-saving models. The main concern here is the amount of energy that goes into the making of new products and whether or not that extra carbon is worth the footprint the product will make once it gets to you.
    28. What is the text mainly about?
    A. What appliances to buy to save energy.
    B. What a carbon footprint means in our life.
    C. How to identify different carbon footprints.
    D. How to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices.
    29. What do we know about the secondary carbon footprint?
    A. It is related to our consumption of fuels.
    B. It is made when we are buying the products.
    C. It is less harmful than the primary carbon footprint.
    D. It is counted as ours though not directly made by us.
    30. Which of the following helps reduce our carbon footprint according to the author?
    A. Using second-hand textbooks. B. Using old and expensive cars.
    C. Buying new but cheap clothes. D. Buying new wooden furniture.
    31. “the footprint” underlined in the last sentence refers to the CO2 produced in ____.
    A. using the product B. recycling the product
    C. making the product D. transporting the product
    D
During an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often. Annoyed by the level of distraction (干扰) in his open office, he said, “That’s why I have a membership at the coworking space across the street — so I can focus”. His comment struck me as strange. After all, coworking spaces also typically use an open office layout (布局). But I recently came across a study that shows why his approach works.
The researchers examined various levels of noise on participants as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups and exposed to various noise levels in the background, from total silence to 50 decibels (分贝), 70 decibels, and 85 decibels. The differences between most of the groups were statistically insignificant; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group — those exposed to a level of noise similar to background chatter in a coffee shop — significantly outperformed the other groups. Since the effects were small, this may suggest that our creative thinking does not differ that much in response to total silence and 85 decibels of background noise.
But since the results at 70 decibels were significant, the study also suggests that the right level of background noise — not too loud and not total silence — may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability. The right level of background noise may interrupt our normal patterns of thinking just enough to allow our imaginations to wander, without making it impossible to focus. This kind of “distracted focus” appears to be the best state for working on creative tasks.
So why do so many of us hate our open offices? The problem may be that, in our offices, we can’t stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that face-to-face interactions and conversations affect the creative process, and yet a coworking space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions.
    32. Why does the interviewer prefer a coworking space?
    A. It helps him concentrate. B. It blocks out background noise.
    C. It has a pleasant atmosphere. D. It encourages face-to-face interactions.
    33. Which level of background noise may promote creative thinking ability?
    A. Total silence. B. 50 decibels C. 70 decibels. D. 85 decibels.
    34. What makes an open office unwelcome to many people?
    A. Personal privacy unprotected. B. Limited working space.
    C. Restrictions on group discussion. D. Constant interruptions.
    35. What can we infer about the author from the text?
    A. He’s a news reporter. B. He’s an office manager.
    C. He’s a professional designer. D. He’s a published writer.

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let’s go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and don’t get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition, because there was no extra money set aside for a college education.(高中毕业后,Jennifer上了一所当地的技术学院来支付她的学费,因为家里没有额外的钱用来支付大学教育)可知,高中毕业后Jennifer通过自己挣钱来完成大学教学,因为家里没有额外的钱。C. She supported herself through college.(她自食其力读完了大学)符合以上说法,故选C项。
She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Misnistry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids.(她选择了位于马什菲尔德的圣约瑟夫医院的UW-Eau Claire项目,因为她可以在离家近的地方攻读四年的学位。 A. To take care of her kids easily.(为了方便照顾她的孩子)符合以上说法,故选A项。
Jennifer sacrificed to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study.(Jennifer为了实现自己的目标牺牲了很多,她放弃了很多个和孩子待在一起的晚上,错过了很多重要的活动)可知,为了实现自己的目标Jennifer放弃了和家人待在一起的时光。B. Her time with family.(她与家人的时光)符合以上说法,故选B项。
Through it all, she reminded in good academic standing and graduated with honors.(虽然经历了这些,但她一直保持着良好的学术地位,并以优异的成绩毕业)和However, her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family-and that’s the pretty powerful.(然而,她的孩子们在见证母亲获得学位的过程中得到了重要的一课。 C. Hard work pays off.(努力会得到回报)符合以上说法,故选C项。
D 29. D 30. A 31. A
文章第一段中“Fortunately, nowadays it is much easier to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices(幸运的是,现在更容易选择环保的生活方式)”以及困扰作者的一个问题“is it better to buy new eco-friendly products or used traditionally produced ones?(新型环保产品,使用过的传统生产的产品,选择哪一种更好?)”
根据第三段中“The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use-those related to their production and breakdown.(第二种足迹是表示我们使用的产品在整个生命周期中间接排放的二氧化碳,这些是和他们的生产和排放有关的)”可知,第二种碳足迹虽然不是我们直接产生的,但是也是我们使用的产品释放出来的,也是要归结到我们身上的。故选D。
根据第四段中“Things like dishes, clothes and furniture fall into the “secondary footprint” group, so less is more and we can focus on finding used goods to avoid the added production.” 故选A。
根据第四段中“The main concern here is the amount of energy that goes into the making of new products and whether or not that extra carbon is worth the footprint the product will make once it gets to you. 故选A。
A 33. C 34. D 35. D
根据第一段“That’s why I have a membership at the coworking space across the street — so I can focus(这就是为什么我在街对面的联合办公空间办了会员,这样我就能专心工作了)”可知,采访者喜欢共享办公空间的原因是那里可以帮助他集中精力。故选A。
根据第二段“The differences between most of the groups were statistically insignificant; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group — those exposed to a level of noise similar to background chatter in a coffee shop — significantly outperformed the other groups.(大多数组之间的差异在统计学上是不显著的;然而,70分贝组的参与者——那些暴露在类似于咖啡店背景噪音水平的人——的表现明显优于其他组。)”和第三段“But since the results at 70 decibels were significant, the study also suggests that the right level of background noise — not too loud and not total silence — may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability.(但由于70分贝的结果是显著的,该研究还表明,适当水平的背景噪音——不要太大,也不要完全安静——实际上可能会提高一个人的创造性思维能力。)”
根据最后一段“So why do so many of us hate our open offices? The problem may be that, in our offices, we can’t stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that face-to-face interactions and conversations affect the creative process, and yet a coworking space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions.(那么,为什么我们这么多人讨厌开放式办公室呢?
根据第一段“During an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often.(在我的一本书的采访中,我的采访者说了一些话,我至今仍时常想起。)”
F 37. D 38. A 39. C 40. G
    36. 上文“Life can be challenging for teens. They must deal with schoolwork, family life and friends at the same time to fit. Feelings of sadness, frustration and irritability are common.”(对于青少年来说,生活是充满挑战的。 以及下文“Their negative feelings don't come and go. Instead, those intense feelings can point to a disease called depression—one that may require treatment”(他们的消极情绪不会来来去去。
    37. 上文“It's easy to think that depressed people simply feel sad or hopeless. For many teens that may be true”(人们很容易认为抑郁的人只是感到悲伤或绝望。 下文“Teachers, parents or even a teen's close friends may find it hard to tell whether these behaviors are just part of being a teens or signs of something truly serious”(老师、家长甚至是青少年的密友可能很难判断这些行为是青少年的一部分,还是一些真正严重的迹象。) D选项hard to spot切题。故选D。
    38. 下文“More than three million Americans between the ages of 12 and 17 experienced depression in 2019”(2019年,超过300万12岁至17岁的美国人经历过抑郁症。) 故选A。
    39. 根据下文精神健康专家Dee说的话“I can only work with what you give me”(我只会根据患者告诉我的情况开展工作。)
    40. 根据空后的“these behaviors could be a symptom of depression(这些行为可能是抑郁症的症状)”可知,该空应该指出抑郁症的一些行为。G选项“Even skipping classes can be a sign that something serious is going on(甚至逃课也可能是有严重问题发生的信号)。该选项中的even是对前文“symptoms of isolation (孤立) or hopelessness”的递进。故选G。

56. for 57. were put 58. outcomes 59. who/that 60. were 61. slightly 62. careful 63. consumption 64. the 65. to limit
Exchange...for... 故填for。
故填were put。
故填who/that。
故填were。
故填the。
故填to limit。

Actually, there are many things we can do to make a difference. For example, we can recycle used items so that we can save natural resources. We can choose public transport instead of private cars to fight the greenhouse effect. More importantly, we should turn off the electrical appliances when we don’t use them.

A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. That afternoon after school, Ronny was bathing with some of his new friends in the river happily. Suddenly, he was stuck in the mud and couldn’t get out. He struggled hard but he was still trapped. He screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could. They were so scared and did not even try to help him.
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by. He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon as possible. Seeing Ronny was almost drowned, Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesitation. He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Ronny to the shore in time. Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.
①困住;陷入:be stuck in/ be trapped in/ get stuck
②尽快:as soon as possible/ as quickly as possible/ at the first opportunity
    ①开心地:happily/with pleasure
    ②徒然;无效:in vain/ for nothing/of no effect
    ③非常;极其;极端地:extremely/ badly/highly/greatly
【点睛】[高分句型1] The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could.
[高分句型2] Seeing Ronny was almost drowned, Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesitation.(现在分词作状语)
