A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. People representing over 100 countries met virtually in Kunming, China, last week to discuss how to protect Earth’s biodiversity(生物多样性). This CBD Meeting（also known as COP15）ran from October 11 to 15, 2021.

There are so many different species. Sadly, species are disappearing all the time. One recent study suggested that around a million species are in danger of extinction. Like the climate crisis, the world’s loss of biodiversity is caused mainly by humans, who don’t always cooperate. Climate change is playing a part. The biggest way humans are causing biodiversity loss is by taking over the homes that all kinds of plants and animals depend on and using them for things like farming, mining, or cutting down trees for wood. Humans are also harming the oceans by fishing too much, and by severely polluting the seas with plastic, oil, and other chemicals.

In 1992, the world’s countries began signing an agreement called the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The meeting is being held in two parts. Last week's meeting discussed plans and goals for protecting biodiversity through the year 2030, which led to a plan called the “Kunming Declaration”. An in-person meeting will be held in Kunming next May to formally agree to the plan. One of its big goals announced in Kunming is to cut dangerous chemical pollution from farming. The plan also includes asking governments to cut up to $500 billion of their support for activities that hurt biodiversity, like some methods of farming, and producing fossil fuels.

CBD organizers hope the world's countries are really ready to work on biodiversity problems this time. In 2010, over 100 countries agreed to a 20-Part Plan to protect biodiversity by 2020. But none of the plan's 20 goals had been consummated by 2020. Solving the problem doesn't depend on what countries say they'll do. It depends on what they actually do.

As snow began to fall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Sunday night, Bethel Park High School football coach Brian DeLallo didn’t think twice when he logged onto his computer to share an update with the team. “Due to expected severe weather, Monday’s weightlifting workout has been cancelled,” he wrote in a tweet and email to players. “Find an elderly or disabled neighbor and shovel (铲雪) their driveway. Don’t accept any money — that’s our Monday workout.”

Around 40 players did exactly what coach DeLallo instructed, heading outdoors in cold temperatures on Martin Luther King Day to help the community. DeLallo said before he even woke up, players were out in their neighborhoods shoveling. David Shelpman, 16, who shoveled 10 driveways over the past few years, said it was “honestly just the right thing to do.” Aidan Campbell, 17, agreed. “It’s genuinely a privilege to be able to hang out with your friends and have fun while at the same time making a big difference to someone who would love to shovel their driveway but can’t for whatever reason,” Campbell said.

Bethel Park resident Robert Klein was overpowered by the gesture. “I have lived in Bethel Park for more than 40 years now and acts of kindness like this are exactly why I have stayed for as I have and why I will never leave.” Klein said. “These young men don’t’ know how much something like this means to me and it makes me so proud to live here.”

Bethel Park High School principal Joseph Villani said, “Coach DeLallo is a great leader who teaches character first, both on and off the field. While he is recognized for this one tweet, this is how he always is as a coach, teacher and person.” DeLallo said shoveling snow instead of working out is not new for the western Pennsylvania high school. “This is something that we’ve done for 20 plus years here. Former coach Jeff Metheny started it and I am just carrying on that tradition.” In fact, high school programs all over western Pennsylvania participate in paying it forward.

When people talk about success, they usually think of the reputation and great fortune naturally. However, I think the definition of success is not just like the traditional idea.

For us students in the school, it seems nowadays the society is telling us to learn hard so as to make a lot of money and then become the successful person. But as my age and experience grows, I have seen and heard many people, who felt lost and did not know what they should fight for, are rich but not happy. Apparently, the measure of success should lie in the positive attitude to life and the happiness one owns. These can't be bought by money, they are the most precious things in life.
