14-year-old Quan Hongchan surprised the world and excited the Chinese people by winning the women’s 10-meter platform Olympic title(奥运会女子10米跳台冠军) with the highest score in history at Tokyo 2020 on Aug. 5.

Born on March 28, 2007, Quan grew up in the small village of Maihe, Zhanjiang, Guangdong province. She is the third girl in her family, with two younger brothers. One day, when Quan was hopscotch(跳格子) with her friends during a break on the school playground, Chen Huaming, a former diver(跳水运动员) and coach from Zhanjiang City Sports School, paid special attention to her jumping ability. He said that she was thin and short, but able to jump higher and longer than the others. At that time, she was 1.2 meters tall and could jump as long as 1.76 meters. Then he went to Quan’s home and spoke to her parents. Later he taught Quan diving at school in Zhanjiang.

The girl had never tried any other sports before but she enjoyed playing in the water. When she was at school, she was not good at studying. However, she soon found confidence in diving. Every day, she practiced diving for long hours and worked hard at every training second. When she entered the national team, she realized that everyone was better than her in technique and was more experienced, so she worked even harder. For a long time, “made in China” made people think of cheap, low-quality(质量) goods. China was just the world’s factory. But now Chinese brands(品牌) are going global and being recognized.

Time magazine recently published a list of the 100 most influential (有影响力的) companies in the world. Several Chinese companies were included, such as tech giants Alibaba, Huawei, Tencent, DJI, TikTok and DiDi Chuxing.

These companies are improving the world with modern technology. Time reported that DJI holds 70 percent of the global drone(无人机) market. This year, it launched(发行) a new drone with a set of glasses that give users a first-person view of their drone’s flight. TikTok has become one of the most popular apps in the US with its never-ending stream of videos. Some 50 million US users spend about 46 minutes on it every day.

Chinese fashion has also interested global shoppers. In 2011, Chinese sneaker brands Feiyue, Huili and Li-Ning got international attention. More recently, Shein has become one of the most popular Chinese fast fashion brands in the foreign market. In 2020, its operating income(营收) reached over 10 billion dollars, an increase of 100 percent, Global Times reported. Many European shoppers say Shein is affordable, fashionable and of high quality.

In the future, Chinese brands will continue to develop. Thanks to a bigger market, improved supply chains(供应链) and efficient manufacturing(高效生产). “This is the best era for the development of local brands,” Yan Qiang, a partner with Beijing-based Hejun Consulting, told Global Times.
