Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him: "Hi, Steven. I’m happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.
So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball at recess. "Hey, Steven," Mr. Rowe commented, "You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick." He was tired and needed to leave. Luca, assuming I'd been through the crack before, guided Steve through the cave for another 15 minutes to an exit. I was second from last to go through. I didn't realize that Luca wasn't there—if I'd known, I wouldn't have attempted the crack, as I needed an experienced guide.
The challenge is to put your feet first down the length of the crack, and then move your body sideways to swing along, before dropping five feet to the floor of the next space. On my first attempt, I knew I wouldn't make_it through, but the group encouraged me to try again. I didn't want to inconvenience anyone by having to make the long trip back through the cave, so I backed out and took off my wetsuit. In just my Tshirt, I tried to slide through again but my hips (屁股)were trapped. My feet were hanging on the other side and my left arm supported my body. My hand rested on a wooden board that had been left covering rocks to protect cavers from slipping. Luca returned and the team tried everything to help me as I mentally focused on escape.
After two hours my arm weakened, so I slid further into the crack, where the gap was only eight and a half inches wide. My body weight was on my left elbow (肘), my back and chest touching the cold stone walls. The guy behind me, Jim,_tried unsuccessfully to pull me back. Of course, I was blocking his escape, too.

Things had been tight for over a year now. My husband Paul's business had taken a huge hit. I have a fulltime job at a day care center and somehow do my homework for my college class too. Then I had to work nights at the mall. Without me taking my second job, there wouldn't be enough money to pay the bills. Let alone buy any Christmas presents for our 15yearold daughter, Marie. Those who live at Windsor Place say they are the ones who have been given the gift. Marian Nelson has no grandchildren of her own. “These kids have filled a void(空虚感) in me,” the 87-year-old said.
Stories like these have led other places to look at the program and consider carrying it out themselves. Michelle Foreman, a board member of a senior center in Alaska, said when she visited Windsor Place she cried nearly half the time she was there.
“One of the things we have not done right in our society is that we have not sent the right message to our senior population,” Foreman said. “We need them to pass on valuable things to our next generation.”
