Look at the map of Spain and point at the center. You’ve located the country’s capital and one of Europe’s most beautiful cities: Madrid. This popular destination is considered a city of contrasts with its abundant historic sites, resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.

    History

This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe’s largest royal palace, and some consider it to be Madrid’s most beautiful building.

Inside the Royal Palace 2,800 rooms are decorated in glory with museum-quality furniture and artworks. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms.

    Art

The Internationally respected Prado Museum is the largest and most impressive art gallery in Spain. Opened in 1819, it is filled with works of art that feature the world’s most comprehensive collection of Spanish paintings.

    Shopping

Madrid has some of Europe’s best shopping, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea (跳蚤) market known as the Rastro where they find everything from antiques to CDs.

    Entertainment

No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain’s famous art form, flamenco. Every day, flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike.

    Food

Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants, but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 p.m., it’s difficult to find good dinner food earlier. If you get hungry before then, the best solution is to try a tapas bar where light snacks are served. Be sure to try the jamon, a kind of dry-cured ham: Spain is famous for it.

    21. What do we know about the Royal Palace in Madrid?

    A. It can hold 2,800 people. B. It is thought to be the largest in Europe.

    C. It’s been visited by 3 million people. D. It has 50 rooms for visit.

    22. What kind of market is “the Rastro”?

    A. To sell various goods. B. To sell artworks.

    C. To sell antiques and CDs. D. To sell local food.

    23. What is a must when traveling in Madrid?

    A. Having dinner earlier. B. Visiting Prado Museum.

    C. Enjoying flamenco. D. Drinking in a tapas bar.

    B

After almost an entire year of not going shopping and vacationing, you find the numbers reflected by your bank account meet your heart’s desire.
Now the most important question comes, what to do with the earnings? Should you fulfill dreams of the present, invest in preserving the future or perhaps keep saving it for a rainy day?
Our elders always try to teach us the value of money and its moral weakness. One may be on a winning streak (连续成功) now, but it will not always be so. One will have days when there will be no sunshine but only rain, and their luck will hide behind those thick grey clouds. Save for those rainy days, they say. Do not spend too much, live within a budget, refrain from credit no matter how small and save for the future.
Since the very first time we earn our own money from a summer job or earning our first salary, the lessons start. In fact, the pocket money that we receive when we are children begins the process of learning how to best manage one’s money.
People often think like thisone day when I have enough money, I will travel the world. Then, once we do earn enough money, tomorrow’s plans start shadowing our present ones. However, is it wise to keep living for that future? Will we still enjoy or even be able to backpack in our 50s? How will we ever enjoy our present if we are constantly living for the future?
Good questions, aren’t they? I say travel but don’t let yourself run dry, treat yourself to some luxuries but also keep enough for your necessities, and enjoy your present but with a plan for the foreseeable future. Life is for the living, so live it sensibly.

    24. Why do elders teach us to save money?

    A. Because there are more rainy days in life.      B. Because no one can win streak.

    C. Because good days may end.                D. Because money can’t buy everything.

    25. What does the underlined phrase “refrain from” mean in Paragraph 3?

    A. select from         B. hold back         C. rely on         D. prefer to
    26. Which of the following opinions would the author agree?

    A. To enjoy yourself in the right time.     B. To wait to travel until we have enough money.

    C. To go backpacking in our 50s.         D. To live for the future.

    27. What should we do with the earnings according to the author?

    A. We should save all for rainy days.        B. We should fulfill our dreams.

    C. We should entertain ourselves.           D. We should live the present wisely.

    C

Anyone who commutes通勤by car knows that traffic jams are an unavoidable part of life. But humans are not alone in facing potential backups.

Ants also commute---between their nest and sources of food. The survival of their colonies depends on doing this efficiently.

When humans commute, there’s a point at which cars become dense稠密enough to slow down the flow of traffic, causing jams. Motsch, a mathematician in Arizona State University, and his colleagues wanted to know if ants on the move could also get stuck. So they regulated traffic density by constructing bridges of various widths between a colony of Argentine ants and a source of food. Then they waited and watched. “The goal was to try to find out at what point they are going to have a traffic jam.” said Sebastien Motsch.

But it appears that that never happened. They always managed to avoid traffic jams. The flow of ants did increase at the beginning as ants started to fill the bridge and then levelled off at high densities. But it never slowed down or stopped, even when the bridge was nearly filled with ants.

The researchers then took a closer look at how the behavior of individual ants impacted traffic as a whole. And they found that when ants sense overcrowding, they adjust their speeds and avoid entering high-density areas, which prevents jams. These behaviors may be promoted by pheromones, chemicals that tell other ants where a trail is. The ants also manage to avoid colliding碰撞with each other at high densities, which could really slow them down. The study is in the journal eLife.

Can ants help us solve our own traffic problems? Not likely, says Motsch. That’s because when it comes to getting from point A to point B as fast as possible, human drivers put their own goals first. Individual ants have to be more cooperative in order to feed the colony. But the research could be useful in improving traffic flow for self-driving cars, which can be designed to be less like selfish humans — and more like ants.

    28. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. Surviving.    B. Avoiding jams.     C. Finding food.    D. Commuting.

    29. How did the researchers control the traffic density of the commuting ants?

    A. By controlling the widths of their path.    B. Through closer observation.

    C. By finding out the dense points.          D. By regulating their numbers.

    30. According to the research, ants can avoid traffic jams mainly because ______.

    A. they follow a special route

    B. they level off at high densities

    C. they depend on their natural chemicals to adjust their speeds

    D. they never stop or slow down on the way

    31. What is the best title of the passage?

    A. Traffic Jams B. Unavoidable? Not for Ants!

    C. Survival of an Ant Colony D. Differences Between Human and Ants

    D

Kids spend a lot of time looking at screens. And some parents worry. But a new study argues against the anxiety parents may feel.

“Parents are hearing a message that social media, digital technology use is causing very serious and harmful problems like depression, like suicide-related behaviors,” Candice Odgers, professor of psychological science at the University of California said. “But the idea is that if you shut off social media, you could in fact be making a situation worse. Parents are really being sent a message that is not supported by anything scientifically.”

Odgers and her colleagues looked at the screen-related behavior of 400 public school students in North Carolina aged 10 to 14. The researchers found that the kids spent between almost five hours to seven hours per day on their devices. That’s a lot of hours but the researchers didn't find connection between the amount of time that young people spent online using digital technologies and mental health signs like depression, or anxiety. They found that young people who sent more text messages actually reported better mental health.

This was a small association, but it reflects what other people have found: the people who are very connected offline, who use technology in the positive ways to stay connected, often are more connected online as well and experiencing better mental health.

So why the fears about screen time? Odgers argues that the methods for previous studies may have led to false conclusions. When given a survey, the kids were often asked to recall, over the past six months, “How often are you online?” and “Have you ever felt depressed”. And the relation between those two things has been used to spread a lot of fear around the connection between social media use and things like depression, yet 99.5% of the reasons that kids differ in their depression is due to something other than the time they spend online.

    32. The new study is mainly about the relation between ________.

    A. kids' screen time and their eyesight

    B. kids' screen time and their depression

    C. social media use and kids' mental health

    D. Internet environment and kids' mental health

    33. What does Odgers think of the message parents received?

    A. It misleads people.                   B. It makes much sense.

    C. It was confirmed by science.           D. It reveals parents' ignorance.

    34. What kind of kids bear better mental health?

    A. Kids spending less time online.            B. Kids staying unconnected offline.

    C. Kids shutting off social media.            D. Kids positively using digital technology.

    35. What's the main purpose of the text?

    A. To present a social phenomenon.         B. To challenge a common belief.

    C. To draw attention to kids' health.         D. To encourage more screen time.

I experienced years of loneliness as a child.   36  His friends teased him about babysitting his sister and his interests were far different from mine. With no other kids of my age in the neighborhood, I had to spend hours by myself.

A bright spot for me turned out to be reading. My love of the written word began early as my mother read to me every evening.   37   I started reading books on my own before age 5 and my mother took me to the public library once a week to borrow several books. I quickly graduated from typical children’s books to ones with fewer pictures and longer chapters. Reading opened new worlds to me. ___38___

My mother also encouraged me to make what I wanted. I tried making toy cars with cardboard boxes and constructing buildings from leftover cardboard and bits of wood my father gave me. When my mother saw my creations, she told me how creative my designs were.   39   I learned a lot about how to extend the life of objects and transform them into something new and useful. It was a trait(特点) others found helpful, and I soon had friends who wanted to make things with me.

40  My parents made it a point for their two kids to spend time outside, no matter the weather or season. My brother, of course, raced off to be with his friends, while I had plenty to do myself. There was making leaf houses in autumn, ice skating in winter, and so much more. They’re all memories I treasure today.

    A. I wasn't alone any longer.

    B. I enjoyed reading stories aloud.

    C. I was invited to play with another kid.

    第二节:读后续写(满分25分)

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

On Friday evening, Emmett and I went to a movie as scheduled. After purchasing the tickets and drinks, we entered the cinema with delight beforehand, waiting for the beginning of the movie.

When I got up in the middle of the movie, Emmett whispered, “Carter, where are you going?” “I forgot to call my mom to tell her what time to pick us up.” I whispered back, leaving my jacket on the seat.

I squeezed past the people in my row, trying not to step on any feet while still watching the screen. I didn’t want to miss a thing. Balfour, the good guy in the movie, was trapped in an underground cave.

When I came back, Balfour’s flashlight almost went out. An enormous snake was moving toward him, twisting its body. Balfour struggled to loosen the chains around his hands and feet to reach his magic cape. With the cape around him, he could completely disappear.

I crawled back across eight people (I counted on the way out), never taking my eyes off the screen. I sat down in my seat slowly, then picked up my drink, and swallowed it quickly. But suddenly my brain said, “That’s not coke. That’s lemonade.” I looked down at the cup, just as the girl next to me shouted, “He drank my lemonade!”

Shhhh!” the people around us said, making quiet complaints.

Where’s Emmett?” I asked, as if the girl had hidden him under her seat.

Carter, down here,” Emmett answered in a low voice. He was two rows ahead of me. I was in the wrong row! Everyone was turning around to look at me.

Here,” I said, handing the girl her drink.

Eww,” she said. “You have had a drink of it, so you owe me a lemonade.”

    Shhhh!” everyone said again.

OK, OK,” I said, starting my crawl across eight sets of feet again. Everybody were complaining as I inched out.

Don’t come back,” the boy on the end said.

    六.读后续写(25分)

    Version 1:

    Paragraph 1

But the problem was that I had to come back to bring this girl a new lemonade. I bought a lemonade, took a deep breath, and went back. This time, I bent low, looking at every person on the end of each row. When I saw the same boy, I moved through fast to get back to that girl. Unfortunately, I stepped on a boy’s feet and banged my knee. After apologizing to him, I quickly fell into the seat next to the girl and handed her the lemonade. Everyone around us all turned to stare at me again with some complaints.

    Paragraph 2

I thought about crawling out of this row and back into Emmett’s row, but I couldn’t. Maybe I would just stay there until the movie ended. Thanking me for the lemonade, the girl talked about the plots I missed. I whispered back, “Thanks.” When the lights of the cinema came on, I grabbed my jacket on the seat and hurried out. Emmett caught up with me, “Do you know that girl? “No.” I answered. “Then why do you have her jacket?” I looked down and found a bright pink jacket. “Here I go again,” I said with embarrassment, spotting the girl in the crowd.

    Version 2:

    Paragraph 1

But the problem was that I had to come back to bring this girl a new lemonade. In order not to miss any plot, I rushed out and purchased a lemonade as quickly as possible. This time, after getting in, I took every single step cautiously as if I were walking on the ice sheet. However, I was about to get to the seat when I felt stepping on something soft and heard a lowered “OUCH”. I looked up, only to see an angry yet familiar face. I stepped on the boy again! Everyone looking at me in annoyance, I, in extreme embarrassment, inched to the girl and handed her the lemonade.

    Paragraph 2

I thought about crawling out of this row and back into Emmett’s row, but I couldn’t. So I got seated at the available seat by her. To cover my embarrassment, I spoke to her in a low voice, asking her about the plot I missed. Much to my relief, she patiently told me the general plot instead of keeping silent. Then we just sat there , enjoying Balfour’s adventure. When the curtain was drawn down, I subconsciously took up my Coke and drank. Oh, no! I drank her lemonade again!
