Grow Through What We’re Going Through

They say to “work smarter, not harder”, but for many of us it’s been a case of both for the past year! We’ve had to adjust to a new way of life where our personal and professional lives are often thrown into conflict, and in the midst of that chaos, where’s the space for us?

For some people, this may be a refreshing thing as we find our flow and a new natural rhythm, yet others may feel like, at best, they’re treading water – and at worst, struggling just to stay afloat.

However you feel, we want to be there to help you to get the most out of your working situation.

Whether you’re looking for support on how to survive the challenge of working from home, or need ideas on how to home in on a new career path, we’ve got you covered.

Packed with inspiration, this issue guides you through creating your own personal development plan (with insight from a qualified life coach), essential tips for turning your passion into profit, and simple steps to nurture your self-trust.

Plus we’ve got motivational insight from the nation’s favourite PE teacher, Joe Wicks, food for thought with a feature on how to create your own ‘power hour’, plus a guide to managing the negativity invading your space.

With so much of our lives spent at our jobs, it’s never been more vital to ensure our routines, boundaries, and work lives are serving us – we deserve no less!

We hope this issue fills you with the confidence to reclaim your career, but if you find yourself spiraling in self-doubt, or feel overwhelmed by all we’re contending with at the moment, I want you to think of the following words from writer Brandi L Bates: “Some roses grow through concrete. C

"Sugar, alcohol and tobacco," economist Adam Smith once wrote, "are commodities which are nowhere necessaries of life, which have become objects of almost universal consumption, and which are, therefore, extremely popular subjects of taxation."

Two and a half centuries on, most countries impose some sort of tax on alcohol and tobacco. With surging obesity levels putting increasing strain on public health systems, governments around the world have begun to toy with the idea of taxing sugar as well.

Whether such taxes work is a matter of debate. A preliminary review of Mexico's taxation found a fall in purchases of taxed drinks as well as a rise in sales of untaxed and healthier drinks. By contrast, a Danish tax on foods high in fats was abandoned a year after its introduction, amid claims that consumers were avoiding it by crossing the border to Germany to satisfy their desire for cheaper, fattier fare.

The food industry has, in general, been firmly opposed to such direct government action. Nonetheless, the renewed focus on waistlines means that industry groups are under pressure to demonstrate their products are healthy as well as tasty.

Over the past three decades, the industry has made some efforts to improve the quality of its offerings. For example, some drink manufactures have cut the amount of sugar in their beverages.

Many of the reductions over the past 30 years have been achieved either by reducing the amount of sugar, salt or fat in a product, or by finding an alternative ingredient. More recently, however, some companies have been investing money in a more ambitious undertaking: learning how to adjust the fundamental make-up of the food they sell. For example, having salt on the outside, but none on the inside, reduces the salt content without changing the taste.

While reformulating recipes(配方) is one way to improve public health, it should be part of a multi-sided approach. The key is to remember that there is not just one solution. To deal with obesity, a mixture of approaches-including reformulation, taxation and adjusting portion sizes-will be needed. There is no silver bullet.

    46. What did Adam Smith say about sugar, alcohol and tobacco?

    A. They were profitable to manufacture.

    B. They were in ever-increasing demand.

    C. They were subject to taxation almost everywhere.

    D. They were no longer considered necessities of life.

    47. Why have many countries started to consider taxing sugar?

    A. They are under growing pressures to balance their national budgets.

    B. They find it ever harder to cope with sugar-induced health problems.

    C. The practice of taxing alcohol and tobacco has proved both popular and profitable.

    D. The sugar industry is overtaking alcohol and tobacco business in generating profits.

    48. What do we learn about Danish taxation on fat-rich foods?

    A. It did not work out as well as was expected.

    B. It gave rise to a lot of problems on the border.

    C. It could not succeed without German cooperation.

    D. It met with firm opposition from the food industry.

    49. What is the more recent effort by food companies to make foods and drinks both healthy and tasty?

    A. Replacing sugar or salt with alternative ingredients.

    B. Setting a limit on the amount of sugar or salt in their products.

    C. Investing in research to find ways to adapt to consumers' needs.

    D. Adjusting the physical composition of their products.

    50. What does the author mean by saying, at the end of the passage, "There is no silver bullet"(Line 4, Para 7)?

    A. There is no single easy quick solution to the problem.

    B. There is no hope of success without public cooperation.

    C. There is on hurry in finding ways to solve the obesity problem.

    D. There is no effective way to reduce people's sugar consumption.

    II(非选择题  25分)

    第三部分:写作(共两节;满分25分)

    第一节: 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Nothing succeeds like confidence. When you are truly confident, it radiates from you like sunlight, and attracts success to you like a magnet(磁铁). Besides, those who are self-confident can in turn inspire confidence in others: their audience, their peers, their bosses, their customers, and their friends. And gaining the confidence of others is one of the key ways in which a self-confident person finds success.

So how can we build a sense of self-confidence and prepare ourselves on the way to success?

First, do what you believe to be right, even if others mock or criticize you for it. Believe in yourself and believe that you can do it under any circumstances. The belief keeps you searching for answers, which means that pretty soon you will get them.

Second, be willing to take risks by going the extra miles to achieve better results. In this case, mistakes cannot be avoided. But don’t hesitate to admit your mistakes, and learn from them.

Next, work hard to settle the problems in order to cover up your mistakes before anyone notices. Building self-confidence is readily achievable, as long as you have the determination to carry things through. And what’s even better is that the things you’ll do to build self-confidence will also build success ----after all, your confidence will come from real, solid achievement.

As you sow, sow will reap. With your perseverance and improvement, you are getting closer to success. At this stage, wait for others to congratulate you on your accomplishments and compliments graciously, which will promote you to gain further success.

Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, and it is no wonder that so many people struggle to find it. Self-confidence really can be learned and built on. Besides, whether you’re working on your own self-confidence or building the confidence of people around you, it’s well worth the effort!

    51. What do you think may be the best title for this passage?(no more than 10 words)

    52. The underlined word in Paragraph 3 may have the same meaning as ______. (no more than 5 words)

    53. What may happen if you want to get better results?(no more than 10 words)

    54. According to Paragraph 5, what will you get in return for your success?(no more than 10 words)

    55. How will you keep confident in your school studies?(no more than 30 words)
