When I was a little girl, my kindergarten teacher handed me child-safe scissrs. As I squeezed my fingers int the handles, the paper turned int a mess. She sighed, “Try harder.” What she didn’t knw was that I hadjust begun my lifelng fight against a wrld built fr the right hand.
That fight fllws me everywhere. Lecture seats with desks n the right twist my bdy like a knt and leave handwriting that lks like a dctr’s ntes. Scissrs, zippers, ntebks and even dr handles seem t wrk against us. When I tk up guitar in cllege, my instructr lked at me as if I had dne smething strange. Apparently, left-handed guitars are “special rder” — cde fr twice the price, half the sympathy.
Yu’d think a few legends wuld change things. Paul McCartney flipped his bass and changed music frever. Rafael Nadal trained his left hand t becme a tennis champin. Even Isaac Newtn was left-handed. But n. Despite all these famus lefties, the wrld still treats us like sme kind f ddity. My grandmther, fr instance, nce tied my left hand behind my back. “Use yur right,” she rdered. I tried — and spilled a whle bwl f sup n the flr. She gave up, muttering, “Maybe she’s special.” I think she meant “hpeless”.
Science, f curse, has my back. Researchers say lefties are mre creative and better at prblem-slving. It’s n surprise we’re cmmn amng artists, musicians, and athletes. When yu’ve spent yur life wrestling with scissrs and drknbs that dn’t fit, a blank page r a tennis racket feels like child’s play.
Even s, the daily cmedy cntinues. At restaurants, I’ve develped a sixth sense fr table psitining — always t the left f right-handers. Peple still stare smetimes, but I’ve cme t enjy it. Being left-handed isn’t just abut using a different hand — it’s abut thinking differently, adapting cnstantly, and laughing thrugh the chas. After all, in a right-handed wrld, being left isn’t wrng — it’s just brilliantly incnvenient.
4. What d we knw abut the authr’s guitar instructr?
A. He thught her playing dd. B. He placed a special guitar rder.
C. He suggested changing her habit. D. He felt sympathy fr left-handers.
5. Why des the authr mentin several celebrities?
A. T celebrate influential figures. B. T shw fame fails t end bias.

Mushrms have been used by ancient humans fr thusands f years, but archaelgists have nly just uncvered their significant rle in shaping civilisatin.
Seventy-five years ag, in a wetland in Yrkshire, UK, archaelgists fund the perfectly preserved remains f dzens f 11,000-year-ld mushrms. Carefully cut and intentinally burned, it is thught that they were used by hunter-gatherers as tinder n their travels, enabling them t stay warm and ck fd while n the mve.
The discvery was s unlikely because fungi (菌类) are cmpsed mstly f water, meaning they rapidly rt and disappear, and s are almst ttally absent frm the fssil recrd. As such, the unexpected ways that mushrms helped ur ancient ancestrs survive have lng remained secret, seemingly lst t time. But in the past few years, new tls have finally allwed us t identify fungal DNA and micr-residues in the muths, utensils and clthing f prehistric humans.
Until a decade ag, prehistric diets were thught t cnsist nly f meat and plants, excluding mushrms. Yet rted views abut ancient dailychices are quietly shifting. In 2017, Weyrich’s team analysed the DNA in Palaelithic dental plaque. They revealed that a grup f Neanderthals in what is nw Belgium supplemented their meaty meals with grey shag mushrms, while thse frm a cave in nrthern Spain dined n split gill mushrms. One member f the Spanish grup, wh lived arund 48, 000 years ag, even chewed n grasses with penicillin fungi, and may have deliberately sught ut this antibitic fungus t reduce dental pain.
These breakthrughs are highlighting hw a hidden fungal kingdm fed, healed and warmed ur Stne Age ancestrs, with recent discveries even illustrating hw fungi helped hld early farming cmmunities tgether, paving the way fr the civilizatin we live in tday. “By revealing the invisible evidence in the archaelgical recrd, we nw see hw fungal cnnectins helped the earliest Nelithic cmmunities t develp an understanding f their land and their sciety,” says Li Liu at Stanfrd University in Califrnia.
8. What des the underlined wrd tinder prbably mean in paragraph 2?
A. Travel fd. B. Fire starter. C. Ancient medicine. D. Cutting tl.
9. Why was little knwn abut ancient mushrm use?
· 第 4页/共 11页
A. Ancient peple hid the evidence. B. Early humans rarely used fungi.
C. Fungi decay t fast fr preservatin. D. Mdern technlgy was nce limited.
10. What can we infer abut the Spanish Neanderthal?
A. He was a skilled hunter-gatherer.
B. He struggled with a fd shrtage.
C. He preferred eating mushrms t meat.
D. He pssessed sme basic medical knwledge.
11. What is the text mainly abut?
A. Evlutinary histry f ancient fungi.
B. Changing diets f prehistric humans.
C. Fungi’s vital rle in human civilizatin.
D. New tls used in mdern archaelgy.

Numerus industries prduce large quantities f wastewaters cntaining high cncentratins f rganic substances and inrganic salts. Discharging these wastewaters t the envirnment is harmful t the ecsystem and human health. Hwever, the high salt cntent in these wastewaters pses serius challenges fr existing treatment prcesses. Researchers at Rice University, in partnership with Guangdng University f Technlgy, have develped a grundbreaking methd fr it — adpting DLS (透析) cmmnly used in medicine.
The researchers selected cmmercial ultrafiltratin membranes (超滤膜) which were designed t let salt pass thrugh while trapping rganic substances. They set up a system where salty wastewater and fresh water flwed in ppsite directins n either side f a special membrane, withut needing pumps. Due t the difference in salt cncentratins between wastewater and fresh water, salt naturally mves int the fresh water while rganic substances are kept back. T test this, they cmpared the amunt f rganic materials and salt in the wastewater befre and after treatment. The results shwed the system culd effectively remve salt withut using extra amunts f fresh water.
One significant advantage f DLS is its resistance t fuling (积 垢). Unlike pressure-driven systems, this methd experiences ntably less build-up f rganic materials n the membrane because it desn’t rely n extra pressure. “This culd translate t lwer energy cnsumptin, less maintenance, and fewer membrane replacements,” said Elimelech, a researcher n the study.
Additinally, with suitable membranes, DLS can be used t separate varius rganic cmpunds, enabling the

selective recvery f valuable resurces frm wastewater. In this way, DLS creates pprtunities fr transfrming wastewater treatment plants int resurce recvery factries, in line with the principles f a circular ecnmy.
Overall, while DLS alne desn’t fully purify wastewater, it can transfrm the high-salinity rganic wastewater stream int a lw-salinity rganic wastewater stream that can be readily treated by cnventinal methds, which revlutinizes the treatment f sme f the mst challenging industrial wastewaters.
12. Why des the authr mentin high salt cntent in paragraph 1?
A. T explain the rigin f rganic substances.
B. T shw the benefits f industrial prductin.
C. T emphasize the difficulty f wastewater treatment.
D. T criticize existing wastewater treatment prcesses.
13. What can we learn abut DLS frm paragraph 2?
A. It cnsumes a large amunt f fresh water.
B. It uses pumps t speed up salt mvement.
C. It perates based n natural cncentratin differences.
D. It allws rganic substances t pass thrugh membranes.
14. What makes DLS mre cst-effective than pressure-driven systems?
A. Its ability t generate extra pressure.
B. Its requirement fr high energy cnsumptin.
C. The frequent replacement f special membranes.
D. Its lwer tendency t accumulate rganic materials.
15. What can be cncluded abut DLS frm the last paragraph?
A. It is nly suitable fr lw-salinity water.
B. It is a cmplete slutin fr purificatin.
C. It makes challenging wastewater easier t prcess.
D. It will eventually replace cnventinal treatment methds.

Maya knew tday was a huge day fr her yunger brther Ted. Ever since he entered high schl, he had dreamed f winning the schl’s badmintn champinship, but it always stayed just ut f reach. This was his last chance — his senir year, his final turnament. And against all dds, he had fught his way t the final match.
In fact, n ne in the wrld understd better than Maya what this mment meant t Ted. After all, she was the ne wh had put a racket in his hands six years ag. She had been the team’s star player until a wrist injury ended her wn dreams, but she turned all her training int his. On the driveway f their hme, she drilled him n ftwrk, drp shts, and the mst imprtant rule f all: “Win with integrity, lse with grace.”
On the day f the final, Maya tk her place n the secnd-flr balcny, vide camera ready. She wanted t capture every mment fr Ted — a lasting memry at the champinship. Frm up there, the angle was perfect. She culd see the entire curt better than anyne n the flr.
The match was electric. Ted and his ppnent, a kid named Le frm ther class, were evenly matched. At 20-20, the next pint wuld decide everything. Le served hard. Ted smashed dwn the line. The shuttlecck landed — just barely utside the baseline. Maya saw it clearly frm abve: the white feathers just brushed the flr a centimeter ut. But the referee (裁判), standing at curt level, was blcked by the net. Frm his angle, the shuttlecck lked like it had landed in. “In!” he called. “Game pint, Ted.”
The crwd erupted. Ted threw his racket int the air, tears streaming dwn his face as teammates lifted him nt their shulders. He had finally dne it. He was the champin.
But Maya std frzen at the railing, her heart sinking. She pulled ut her camera and replayed the vide. Once. Twice. Three times. Each replay cnfirmed what she already knew: the shuttlecck was ut. The champinship did nt belng t her brther.
