In first grade, I tk a spelling test with the wrd “f” n it. O-F. “Of.” Every student that day spelled the wrd crrectly except Malclm, the slwest in the class. He had spelled the wrd U-V. “Uv.” I remember thinking “Geez, hw silly is this kid?” But as I sat there, I realized that spelling “f” with a U and a V made a lt mre sense than with an O and an F, which were crrespnding t sunds nthing t d with the wrd “f”.
Why was this ever-s-simple wrd spelled in this cmpletely illgical way? The best answer I culd cme up with at the time was: That’s just the way it is, that’s what adults tld me was the truth, and that’s hw I have t spell the wrd t get it right and be a gd student. S I better just shut up, lk smart, and use an O and an F.
I didn’t knw it then, but this little realizatin was my first brush with an understanding f what indctrinatin was. All f us in the class that day s quietly and withut questin accepted a truth because it was backed by authrity and traditin. It was the rule, and the wrld wuld see Malclm as silly, and nt the spelling.
The spelling f “f” may nt be a wrthy battle t build a life arund, but this memry helped me becme aware f the fact that the wrld is a place that cmes with a lt f strange rules that we ften fail t questin. As a teenager, I called these rules “uvisms”.
Grwing up, I recgnized the presence f these uvisms in the expectatins and assumptins pressed n me by my surrundings. Many f them are there fr gd reasns. Many are nt. Yu dn’t have t fllw all f them. I believe in the misspelling f the wrd “f” and the necessity fr each generatin t questin the assumptins f the previus.
4. What did the authr think f Malclm’s spelling afterwards?
A. Reasnable.B. Childish.C. Creative.D. Casual.
5. What is the hidden reasn fr the authr accepting the standard spelling?
A. Desire t utsmart thers.B. Preference fr lgical spelling.
C. Obedience t established rules.D. Determinatin t uphld the truth.
6. What des the term “uvisms” mainly refer t?
A. Newly-generated creative cncepts.
B. Widely-accepted illgical practices.
C. Intensely-debated spelling patterns.
D. Deeply-rted childhd memries.
7. Which des the authr try t advcate in the last paragraph?
A. Explring the unknwn.B. Tlerating minr mistakes.
C. Develping critical thinking.D. Fllwing the extrardinary.

At times ur emtins can seem like unreasnable respnses, but ur brains have carefully evlved these mechanisms with just ne target: keeping us alive. While we interpret different emtins as psitive r negative, the mst ancient parts f the human brain develped them n the principle that we must survive. The fundamental emtins that mtivate us individually are almst always sadness and happiness. Sadness results frm lss, and serves the bilgical purpse f mtivating a persn t recver that lss, whether it is a yung child searching fr their mther in a supermarket r smene trying hard t get a new jb after being dismissed. But the ultimate human emtin is happiness, and we are all in search f it. When yu’re sitting arund a campfire, safe in the cuntryside with sme clse friends and gd fd, yu feel happiness because yu have fund the resurces that yur primitive brain is seeking.
The next time yu sit in an airprt departure lunge, lk fr the emtins. Many farmers acrss the western African natin f Gabn share the same dissatisfactin: waking up t damaged crps after nighttime break-ins by hungry frest elephants. But sme elephants aren’t just after tasty snacks. The animals ften seek ut nly the stems and leaves f banana and papaya plants and abandn the nutritius fruit, which lies brken n the grund. “That makes farmers even angrier, because they can’t understand why they just damage the fruits and dn’t eat them,” says Steeve Ngama, a cnservatin scientist at Gabn’s Natinal Center fr Scientific and Technlgical Research.
But why wuld elephants skip the fruit? Sutheast Asian frest elephants eat certain plants as self-medicatin when they are ill. And banana and papaya leaves are knwn t have medicinal effects. Ngama wndered whether Gabnese farms are nt just fd surces fr elephants but als “pharmacies”.
Tgether with ther scientists, Ngama has nw fund evidence fr this idea. Published in Eclgical Slutins and Evidence, their study reprts that African frest elephants are mre likely t chse banana and papaya plants when suffering frm gut parasites (肠道寄生虫). Between 2016 and 2017, the researchers cllected elephant dung (粪便) and plant samples in Crystal Muntains Natinal Park. Lab analysis shwed that infected elephants were 16 percent mre likely t eat banana stems and leaves and 25 percent mre likely t feed n papaya plants.
Hwever, ther scientists think mre research is needed. Eldie Freymann, a pstdctral researcher, ntes that crp-damaging elephants might simply carry mre parasites because they stay clse t humans. Still, she believes the study is an imprtant step in understanding elephants’ self-medicating behavir. Researchers als nte that banana and papaya cntain chemicals that fight parasites, and elephants may learn t seek medicinal plants by taste and pass the knwledge t family members.
Ngama hpes the findings will reduce cnflicts between elephants and farmers. Farmers in Gabn ften kill elephants that destry crps. But prviding elephants with alternative treatments, such as mineral salts, might keep them away frm farms. The study culd als change peple’s pinins f elephants and help discver new medicines fr humans. Observing hw elephants treat diseases like Ebla might even slve difficult medical prblems that humans face nw.
12. What annys Gabn’s farmers mst abut elephant attacks?
A. Elephants feed n their best harvest crps.
B. Elephants damage fruits in a pintless way.
C. Night activities f elephants ruin lcal farming.
D. Frequent animal raids reduce farm incme.
13. What can be cncluded frm Ngama’s research findings?
A. Elephants’ fd chices are affected by physical cnditins.
B. Trpical crps pssess widespread medical functins.
C. Sick elephants rely ttally n farm plants t recver.
D. Gut parasites frce elephants t give up sweet fruits.
14. Why des the authr mentin Eldie Freymann?
A. T stress human influence n plant selectin.
B. T prve the study’s data is ttally wrng.
C. T present bjective dubts abut the finding.
D. T ffer new evidence fr self-medicatin.
15. What is the main idea f the text?
