Our airprt taxi driver pinted ut landmarks and shared histrical facts. Thrugh his thick Scttish accent, he suggested visiting the Natinal Recrds f Sctland ffice t explre ur family histry. Despite their jet lag (时差反应), my kids perked up at this suggestin. They barely knew the names f their relatives but were eager t dig int their past.
On ur way int the city, we saw Edinburgh Castle n the rcky cliff f Castle Rck. The streets were lined with ancient buildings and narrw passageways, with Arthur’s Seat twering in the backgrund.
After drpping ff ur bags at the htel, we wandered thrugh the lively streets. The Ryal Mile, a rad between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace f Hlyrdhuse, was busy with activity. My kids were mre interested in the suvenir shps lining the street.
We visited a few shps, seeing typical Scttish items: bxed shrtbread, Lch Ness mnster tys and wlen sweaters. One stre caught my kids’ attentin with a large display f scarves arranged by family. My bys quickly fund the patterns f their ancestrs, Cunningham and MacPhersn. They were fascinated by the clrful patterns and felt a cnnectin t their heritage.
My bys are a mix f several cultures. Their cnnectin t these cultures has faded, but in that shp, I saw a change. They realized these scarves represented their family histry. It was a simple yet deep link t their past.

Giraffes have ne f the mst recgnizable shapes n the planet. “They walk s gracefully that it lks like they are flating acrss the grassland,” says Michael Brwn, an eclgist with the Giraffe Cnservatin Fundatin (GCF).
Our familiarity with these tall animals can smetimes hide their declining numbers, masking a “silent extinctin”. Expanding agriculture and human cmmunities acrss Africa have destryed r fragmented large areas f the grassland where giraffes need t find fd, causing a 40 percent decline in giraffe species since 1985. Nubian giraffes, a critically endangered subspecies fund in Suth Sudan, Ethipia, Uganda and Kenya, have lst an estimated 95 percent f their ppulatin. Tday they’re dwn t perhaps 3,000 animals.
This crisis recently led GCF t partner with African Parks, a cnservatin grup managing Badingil and Bma Natinal Parks in Suth Sudan. They aim t track, study and prtect the giraffes.
Tracking giraffes presents a challenge. GPS cllars typically g arund the neck, but giraffe necks, six feet lng and varying in thickness, aren’t suited fr cllars; the devices slide dwn when the animal lwers its head. Recent technlgical advances have shrunk trackers t the size f a candy bar, small enugh t attach t the tail r an ear. The new tags are slar-pwered, less nticeable and shuld last a year r mre. In April, 2024, Fergusn and thers frm African Parks went acrss Badingil and Bma by helicpter and attached trackers t 11 Nubian giraffes. The data cllected will help identify where they mainly live and g within the parks’ 7.4 millin acres, ptentially driving their expansin and shwing where extra patrls t limit illegal hunting r cmmunity educatin t encurage lcal supprt fr cnservatin can save giraffe lives. “We can’t cnserve what we dn’t understand,” says Julian Fennessy, c-funder and cnservatin directr f GCF. “We need these data t prtect this landscape befre it’s t late.”
      8. What has caused a 40 percent decline in giraffe species since 1985?
      A. Disease utbreaks.B. Climate change.C. Habitat lss.D. Illegal hunting.
      9. Why are traditinal GPS cllars unsuitable fr giraffes?

First impressins can be harsh. One mistake, and yu might feel like yu’ll frever be seen as an idit in smene’s eyes. Hwever, I believe reality is kinder than that.
Making a first impressin is like trying t keep a dr pen with yur ft. Many encunters with strangers are shrt and quick and may never happen again. Smetimes that can be a blessing: If the persn yu meet desn’t care t remember yu, yu’ll quickly fade int the crwd f strangers in their mind, aviding any negative r lasting impressin. Other times, it can be disappinting — imagine striking up a cnversatin with smene interesting nly t part ways befre exchanging cntact infrmatin.
T avid being frgtten, yu need t d smething memrable — but nt smething flish. Make an impressin by asking an insightful questin r making smene laugh. This means taking risks and aviding bland (乏味的) small talk; if that’s nt what yu ffer, yu’ll likely be pushed t the back f their memry, unlikely t be remembered again.
But what if yu messed up yur first impressin? And ne day yu see them lking at yu, recalling the time yu embarrassed yurself, and they’re walking tward yu thinking, “I knw yu frm smewhere …”
In that case, yur secnd impressin needs t be better. In my 19 years f making first impressins — sme nt s great — I’ve fund that peple will give yu a secnd chance if yu give them smething t care abut. Just because yu messed up the first time desn’t mean yu shuld withdraw and stp being interesting. Yu shuld try harder: Listen well, ask relevant questins, smile ften, tell a jke, and share what yu care abut.
Nne f this is a guaranteed “Hw t Make Peple Like Yu” guide, by the way. I’m nt even sure if any f this wrks. But peple seem t like talking t me, s maybe sme f it des wrk.
Anyway, if this is yur first impressin f me, I hpe it’s been a gd ne.
      12. What are first impressins like accrding t paragraph 2?
      A. Casual and interesting.B. Brief and temprary.
      C. Imprtant and lasting.D. Negative and unstable.
      13. Hw can yu make a memrable first impressin accrding t the authr?
      A. By engaging in small talk.B. By aviding risky behavir.
      C. By demnstrating insight r humr.D. By sharing yur persnal experiences.
      14. What des the authr recmmend ding if yu mess up yur first impressin?
      A. Aplgizing immediately.B. Aviding seeing the persn again.
      C. Frgetting abut the encunter.D. Making a better secnd impressin.
      15. What tne des the authr take when discussing the effectiveness f the advice?
      A. Cld.B. Playful.C. Serius.D. Cnvincing.
