Learning t say "yes, and" When I first heard abut the imprvisatin (即兴表演) class,I was hesitating. As a quiet and shy girl,I feared imprvising in frnt f strangers.Hwever,I knew I wanted t wrk as a science cmmunicatr after finishing my Ph.D. ,s it seemed like a perfect pprtunity t learn hw t speak and cmmunicate with thers effectively.I signed up,knwing the experience wuld give me help.
During ur first class,we learned an imprtant cncept f imprvisatin: "yes, and." It means that,as imprvisers,we'd better accept what fellw perfrmers say.If smene says that rhins (犀牛) are librarians,fr example, then rhins are librarians. We d nt questin the lgic;we say "yes" and then cntinue with the scene as if nthing is wrng.
The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned int mnths,I became mre cmfrtable and even started t enjy ur classes.I became better at listening, relating t my cnversatin partners, and cmmunicating clearly in the mment.Once when I was giving a presentatin abut my science,an audience member surprised me with a questin that didn't grw ut f the infrmatin I'd presented.Instead f getting cnfused and nervus,I tk the "yes, and" apprach — accepting the questin and letting my mind fcus n why it was asked. That helped me find an apprpriate answer.I gt pretty excited abut it.
The benefits f imprvisatin g beynd cmmunicatin.Befre attending the class,I wuld get stuck when my experiments prduced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But nw,instead f getting discuraged,I will stay pen t the pssibility that the results are real, keep explring the data and end up identifying a new type f cell — ne that isn't behaving as expected.
I think all scientists can benefit frm this lessn. If the data say rhins are librarians, then it's wrth finding ut whether rhins are,in fact, librarians. As scientists,ur jb isn't t challenge data that dn't supprt a precnceived (先入为主的) stry, but t say "yes, and. "
1.Why did the authr attend the imprvisatin class?______
      A. T imprve her speaking and cmmunicatin ability.

      C. T finish her Ph.at university.
      D. T get a different experience.

4 There are n reprted sightings f teenage elephants hesitantly sitting dwn at the family dinner table with earphnes in place, ccasinally giving ne-wrd answers t parents' questins.
But they d exhibit ther behavirs many parents f human teens wuld recgnize, said Mss,a researcher wh has studied elephants in Kenya's Natinal Park fr nearly five decades.
"They're naïve (天真的).They have a lt t learn and they make mistakes," Mss said.
This is particularly true fr males. She explained:They ruin crps. They get sht. They die. "It's just like yung human males wh drive t fast," Mss said, "and the insurance cmpanies knw very well t make them pay higher insurance rates."
Barbara Nattersn,a Harvard bilgist pinted ut that adlescent animals frequently put themselves in danger intentinally. This behavir is seen thrughut the animal wrld. The adults f any species may cnsider sme actins f their yung lw-judgment and high-risk;hwever,these actins actually serve a purpse.
An example is a practice called "predatr (捕食者) inspectin" which means adlescent animals apprach predatrs rather than run away. The trade-ff fr the danger is that they can watch, smell and learn abut the predatr. They gather all kinds f infrmatin that can keep them safer as adults.
The idea that adlescents are hard-wired t take these risks can help peple understand human teens' behavir.
"Teens seem driven t try new things and test bundaries in their wn versin f 'predatr inspectin'," Nattersn said. "They try t have as many experiences as they can befre they leave the nest."
Anther key aspect f adlescence is an increase in time spent wandering in grups.Adlescence is marked by high levels f peer pressure as well as near-disaster.Scientists have fund that adlescents f all kinds are mre likely t make dangerus mves while with peers.
Laurence Steinberg,a psychlgy prfessr at Temple University, fund mice and human grup adlescent behavir has smething in cmmn.He set up tw experiments. One invlved mice, half f which were adlescents, drinking ethanl-spiked (添加乙醇的) water. The ther invlved human teens playing a vide game reprducing driving cnditins.
"We fund that in the presence f peers, adlescent mice drank mre than they d when they're alne," Steinberg said, "and that the teenagers in the driving study als tk mre risks when thers were arund."
5 These findings fit with what Steinberg says is anther multi-species adlescent quality:the desire t scialize.
"Fr the mst part, adlescents, human and animal alike, prefer t be with ther adlescents," Steinberg said. "If I say teenagers are scial animals,I think the wrd 'animal' is just as imprtant in that sentence as the wrd 'scial'."
Bth Nattersn and Steinberg hpe their findings will help peple wh are raising adlescents.
4.Accrding t Nattersn, what is a risky but valuable actin fr adlescent animals? ______
      A. Gathering infrmatin with the help f parents.
      B. Challenging predatrs with ther adlescents.
      C. Observing an adult hunting a large animal.
      D. Watching enemies' behavir up clse.

In the USA,yuth curfews(宵禁)are traditinally issued by a parent in the interest f safety. This type f curfew is persnal, and rightfully s.Hwever,t stp teenagers cmmitting crimes, sme fficials have turned yuth curfews frm family decisins int public laws.
The idea may have been thught t have gd intentins. In practice, hwever, these plicies have been shwn t be unfair and uncnstitutinal, accrding t the American Civil Liberties Unin (ACLU).In the twn f Sumner,Washingtn,a father allwed his furteen-year-ld sn t g t a cnvenience stre after 11:00 had adpted a curfew law that prhibited peple under the age f eighteen frm being in public places past that hur.The father was fined, and then he pursued a legal challenge against the twn.The ACLU,which filed the case n behalf f the father, claimed the curfew laws had vilated(侵犯)parents' rights. In the end,Sumner's curfew laws were struck dwn.
But isn't it irrespnsible nt t enfrce a curfew n teenagers?Curfew laws supprters argue that fficials shuld prvide a curfew t ensure teens are hme by a reasnable hur.The risk f a serius accident is three times as high fr drivers aged sixteen t nineteen as fr drivers ver twenty. And dangers nly increase at night. This indicates t sme that a law keeping teens ff the rad late at night is a psitive safety measure.Still, the Natinal Highway Traffic Safety Administratin(NHTSA)says that the best ways fr drivers t increase safety are by beying the speed limit, wearing a seat belt, and paying attentin. The NHTSA makes n mentin f yuth curfews making driving safer.
In cities, curfew enfrcement has been ineffective r even had a negative impact n cmmunities.Mst crimes cmmitted by teens actually happen arund 3:00 p.m.,right after schl.On nn-schl days, that time shifts t between 7:00 9:00 curfew hurs, usually between 10:00 6:00 a.m.,ccur at a time f day when teenage crime is at its lwest.Meanwhile, vilent crime rates peak arund 10:00 adults. When law enfrcement perfrms the teen curfew sweep, plicemen are distracted frm the mre serius vilent crimes being cmmitted by adults at that time.Als trubling is the racial discriminatin in cities with curfews.Fr example, recent data have fund that in Minneaplis,Minnesta,56% f yuths charged with breaking curfews were African American.Other law enfrcement department reprts shw similar prblems.Curfew laws are criticized because they are enfrced in a racially discriminatry way.
The ACLU has succeeded in striking dwn at least ne curfew law because f cncerns ver parental rights.Alng with ther cmmunity and civil rights grups,it cntinues t pursue ther cases, arguing that curfew law enfrcement can nly increase tensin and crime.T arrest teens fr driving hme frm the mvies, playing basketball in the park,r simply walking their dg is t punish them fr being utside their hmes - a plicy incnsistent with the individual rights established in the
