My wife and I hmeschl ur 11-year-ld sn, and I spend lts f time playing and ding things with him. I used t think f this as special time. This past year, I talked with him abut setting aside a time when I wuld just fllw his lead in play, when he wuld get t decide what happened and hw it happened. He liked the idea, s we arranged t d it nce a week fr an hur, after his guitar lessn.
During the first few special times, he wuldn’t be able t think f what he wanted t d with me r hw he wanted t use my full attentin. I wuld get antsy and wuld have t stp myself frm making suggestins. He wuld ften say, “Well, what wuld yu like t d?” r “Let’s g d this; yu’ll like this.” I started t ntice what a struggle it was fr him t just want smething fr himself. He was always cnsidering me first.
Often biting my tngue and smetimes failing, I tried t wait until he culd figure ut smething that he really wanted t d. During sme f the first special times, he decided t g shpping and just lk at the things he wanted. Recently he has chsen t use my attentin t perfect skills—we g ut and thrw a baseball fr an hur. Often I have t stp myself frm teaching r frm asking him t keep trying when he is ready t mve n quickly t smething else.
As the year cntinues, I watch my sn becme mre cnfident and experiment mre with hw he can use me, nw that he knws he has me fr a fixed time. If my attentin wanders, he’ll remind me that it is his special time.

Have yu ever beyed the suggestins f a digital writing assistant t replace a wrd r restructure a sentence? Befre the appearance f digital tls, yu’d prbably have turned t a dictinary fr the same assistance.
Dictinaries enable us t write nt with fail-safe cnvenience but with riginality and a pint f view. While AI assistants prduce phrases and statements s writers dn’t have t think them up, dictinaries prvide us with the knwledge t use language urselves in expressive and ptentially infinite (无穷的) ways. They place chice and authrity literally in human hands, frcing us t discver hw we want t explain urselves and ur ideas t the wrld.
The abundance f digital writing assistants gives greater urgency t debates abut what a dictinary shuld be. In 1946, Gerge Orwell described gd writing as “picking ut wrds fr the sake f their meaning,” a practice that dictinaries facilitate while digital writing prgrams discurage. Writers cnsulting a dictinary make a chice, while writers guided by an app have their chices made fr them. The digital-native apprach delivers hands-ff, derivative (衍生的) cmmunicatin. The ther requires leafing thrugh pages withut knwing exactly where yu’ll end up. Withut dictinaries t prvide us with a guide t English’s ptential, writing that way is nearly impssible.
Our ability t express urselves is critical - it helps us define wh we are. Dictinaries aid us in achieving this: They categrize ur unique ways f thinking thrugh language. I’m a Canadian; my feeling f pride in my native land is enhanced by small verbal Canadianisms like eaves trugh r serviette, which are well-dcumented in dictinaries but rarely used by AI chatbts, fr the mst part.
As digital writing extends deeper int ur lives and minds, we need dictinaries mre than ever. Abandning dictinaries and embracing mechanized writing wuld weaken ur capacity fr cllective identity quite as much as the ability t express urselves.
What might be a distinct feature f dictinaries accrding t the authr?
They prmise fail-safe phrases.
They prmte creative writing.
They pssess academic authrity.
They prvide ready-made expressins.
What des the authr imply abut writers wh rely n digital writing assistants?
They write with greater efficiency and accuracy.
They prduce mre riginal and expressive texts.
They lse the pprtunity t make meaningful chices.
They are mre likely t fllw Gerge Orwell’s advice.
Why des the authr mentin “eaves trugh” and “serviette” in paragraph 4?
T shw hw AI aids us in expressing.
T indicate the weakness f dictinaries.
T illustrate hw language use affects identity.
T celebrate the diversity f Canadian English.
What can be a suitable title fr the text?
Why Keep Yur Dictinary?B. Hw t Deal with Digital Writing?
C. Wh Uses Writing Assistants?D. What t Expect frm Dictinaries?
D
The questin f hw art might make us mre empathic (有同理心的) citizens is a grwing interest fr art institutins, artists, and cultural plicy makers.
Despite high interest, there is surprisingly little data n whether visiting an exhibitin r viewing an artwrk really des anything, especially regarding its effect n hw we think and behave. What kind f effects we might find and hw lng effects might last are entirely unknwn.
T answer these questins, a research team assessed (评估) visitrs’ experiences fr the exhibitin, Shw Me Yur Wund, rganized by Jhanna Schwanberg and Klaus Speidel at Dm Museum Wien. The exhibitin used a cmbinatin f mdern and histrical art t fcus n the tpic f vulnerability (脆弱性). Thrugh the exhibitin, Jhanna Schwanberg and Klaus Speidel aimed t encurage visitrs t reflect n a key issue f humankind and t bring abut psitive change.
Researchers first stpped peple walking ut f the museum and asked if they wuld like t participate in exchange fr a free ticket. Visitrs accepting the ticket were asked t reprt n their thughts and feelings regarding their empathic cncern fr thers — bth immediately befre and after the visit. The results shwed that, indeed, the exhibitin increased empathy in visitrs.
The research team als used an experience sampling methd (ESM) technique with the same exhibitin, in which a secnd grup f 41 peple used an app n their mbile
phnes t reprt their thughts and actins each day. When cmparing the perid befre the visit t the perid after, the tw-week results shwed that participants reprted trying t cnsider thers’ feelings and reflecting mre abut themselves fr the fllwing week. Mst f these changes lasted fr the rest f the week.
“These results prvide evidence that even a brief visit t an art exhibitin can make a detectable change. Even when the impact has a shrter duratin, it still is psitive,” nted Matthew Pelwski frm University f Vienna. “If we think abut all f the thusands f peple wh might visit an exhibitin, if everyne thinks a little bit mre f thers, that can lead t a pwerful effect.”
What did the researchers d first?
They fllwed visitrs fr tw weeks.
They interviewed exhibitin visitrs.
They gave all passers-by free tickets.
They used apps t measure visitrs’ empathy.
Why did the researchers ask participants t use an app?
T encurage kindness.B. T send timely guidance.
C. T limit their screen time.D. T track their respnses.
Which f the fllwing may be Pelwski’s expectatin?
Further investigatin will be carried ut.
Art museums d mre t appeal t visitrs.
Jint effrts shuld be made in the future.
Mre and mre peple visit art exhibitins.
What is the main idea f the text?
Vulnerability may bring abut psitive change.
Viewing an artwrk affects peple’s daily behavir.
Visiting art exhibitins can make us mre empathic.
Empathy is a necessary element fr art appreciatin.

Tday I'd like t intrduce yu t ne f the mst remarkable cmpsers f ur time: Tan Dun.
Tan Dun is a true pineer (11) in blending Eastern and Western musical traditins. Tan started ut as a musician fr the Peking Opera. Hwever, he fell in lve with Western classical music and began writing classical Western peras that shw a strng tuch (12) f Chinese music. Like his peras, the scres fr Cruching Tiger, Hidden Dragn and Her use Chinese musical instruments and styles in a Western classical music scre. The music fllws all the rules f mst film scres— its purpse is t tell yu hw t feel abut the actin in the film and t help tell the stry. Hwever, perhaps because f his classical music backgrund, his scres can stand alne as wrks f art (13) withut needing a film t supprt them.
His mst famus achievement came in 2001 (14) when he wn the Academy Award fr Best Original Scre, becming the first Chinese cmpser t win an Oscar.
Tan Dun is als knwn fr his "rganic music" —he makes music with water, paper, and stnes. He turns water basins int musical instruments, creating sunds that have never been heard befre. In shrt, what I admire mst abut Tan Dun is his belief (15) that music can cme frm anywhere and that East and West can speak the same musical language. As he nce tld the Glbal Times, "Music is an ambassadr t the wrld and the best language that can be shared by different kinds f peple frm different cultural backgrunds. We are excited t share music and the specific
vice f tday, the vice f nature, the vice f peace and the vice f friendship."
