Have yu ever thught, “Maybe this is all I’m ever meant t be?” Many f us are trapped by labels like “nt talented enugh” — as iflife were a ne-way rad with n turns. Barbara
Oakley’s Mindshift wrks like a wise guide, helping us remve these mental blcks. It desn’t ffer empty encuragement, but breaks dwn the science behind change.
The first part f the bk tells stries f rdinary peple wh dared t reshape their lives.
Graham Keir, a musician, nce believed he had “n brain fr science” and tday walks the halls f medical schl. Or Ali, wh nce struggled with basic maths, nly t later master cding and earn multiple prmtins. These are nt tales f sudden genius, but f imperfect practice thrugh
setbacks and slw prgress. Oakley intrduces a pwerful cncept — secnd-skilling. In tday’s fast-changing wrld, relying n just ne area f expertise is risky. Develping a secnd skill can make yu mre adaptable.
If the first part helps us see what’s pssible, the secnd is a guide fr making it happen.
Oakley draws n interviews with dzens f career changers t shw what strategies wrked and what pitfalls t avid. Beynd learning frm thers, the bk’s secnd part ffers hnest advice fr quieting self-dubt and turning learning frm a chre int a habit. One f the bk’s mst
valuable insights is that what matters is nt “intense practice every day”, but “practise every day, withut fail”. Even fifteen minutes daily sends steady signals that quietly reshape yur brain.
That said, the bk’s perspective isn’t universal. Rted in a Western cntext, it draws
largely n stable prfessinals — leaving quieter questins abut thse facing real hardship. And while it priritises practice ver passin, sme may find this apprach cl t the tuch.
Yet perhaps that clness is its strength: it desn’t sell miracles, but ffers a slid
framewrk. After reading, yu may nt have all the answers. But yu might ask: “Culd what I nce thught impssible actually be within reach?”
Ultimately, Mindshift gives smething better: a mind pen and flexible, ready fr change. And that, perhaps, is the truest mindshift f all.

Why are we s sure that the way we see peple, situatins and plitics is accurate, and the way ther peple see them is flishly wrng? The answer, accrding t new research by UCLA psychlgy prfessr Matthew Lieberman, lies in a regin f the brain he calls the “gestalt
crtex,” which helps peple make sense f infrmatin that is unclear r incmplete — and dismiss alternative interpretatins.
Peple ften mistake their wn understanding f peple and events as bjective truth, rather than as merely their wn interpretatin. That phenmenn, called “naive realism,” leads peple t believe that they shuld have the final wrd n the wrld arund them. “The evidence frm neural data is clear that the gestalt crtex is central t hw we cnstruct ur versin f reality,”
      Lieberman said.
Mental acts that are rganized, effrtless and based n ur experiences tend t ccur in the gestalt crtex. Fr example, a persn might see smene else smiling and withut giving it any
apparent thught, perceive that the ther persn is happy. Because thse inferences are immediate and effrtless, they typically feel mre like “seeing reality” — even thugh happiness is an
internal psychlgical state — than they d like “thinking,” Lieberman said.
“We believe we have merely witnessed things as they are, which makes it mre difficult t appreciate, r even cnsider, ther perspectives,” he said. “The mind emphasizes its best answer and rejects the rest f slutins. The mind may initially prcess the wrld like a demcracy (民主国家) where every alternative interpretatin gets a vte, but it quickly ends up like an
authritarian regime (独裁政体) where ne interpretatin rules with an irn fist and disagreement is remved. In selecting ne interpretatin, the gestalt crtex literally abandns thers.”
The gestalt crtex is lcated behind the ear, and it is situated between the parts f the brain respnsible fr prcessing visin, sund and tuch; thse parts are cnnected by a structure called the temprparietal junctin, which is part f the gestalt crtex. In the new study, Lieberman
prpses that the temprparietal junctin is central t cnscius experience and that it helps
rganize and integrate psychlgical features f situatins that peple see s they can make sense f them effrtlessly.
      18 .What des Lieberman’s study fcus n?
A .Why peple tend t think they are right.
B .Why peple ften misunderstand thers.
C .Hw peple perceive the wrld differently.
D .Hw peple treat alternative interpretatins.
19 .What des “naive realism” refer t in paragraph 2?
      A .Trusting thers’ pinins blindly.
      B .Drawing inferences reasnably.
      C .Aviding similar interpretatins.
D .Cnfusing persnal views with facts.
20 .Hw des the gestalt crtex handle cnflicting interpretatins?
A .It dismisses the false nes.
B .It priritizes ne ver the thers.
      C .It analyses their differences.
D .It develps them int a new idea.
21 .What is the key rle f the temprparietal junctin accrding t Lieberman?
A .Lcating the psitin f the gestalt crtex.
      B .Cntrlling vluntary physical mvement.
C .Integrating senses fr easy cmprehensin.
      D .String lng-term memries f scial events.

In 1995, a bilgist had an uncnventinal idea. He studied brainless slime mulds (无脑黏菌)and became cnvinced it was intelligent. It slved prblems and made decisins as ifit had a mind. T test this, he built a rail netwrk mdel with fd pieces as cities and placed the slime
muld at the “central statin.” Within a day, it created an efficient netwrk similar t the human-designed ne — withut a brain.
This experiment questins a cherished assumptin: that intelligence requires a brain. Tday, “intelligence” is being reduced t human-like thinking. We debate AI’s impacts but rarely ask:
What is intelligence? The danger isn’t that machines are becming t smart, but that ur
understanding f “smart” has cllapsed int smething narrw and fcused nly n humans. In ur rush t create artificial minds, we’ve frgtten t study the real nes.
The planet is already filled with superintelligent systems. Water adapts and carves
canyns.Trees share nutrients and warn neighbrs. Whle frests perate like cnnected netwrks. Even rcks pssess a frm f wisdm. We say “dumb as rcks,” but rcks endure — they are
stable, and they d nt self-destruct. We miss these insights because we’ve narrwed intelligence t human-like traits: prblem-slving, language, planning. The lngest-lived systems — frests,
reefs — behave like slime mulds. They are slw, steady and adaptive, indifferent t public nise. Their ambitin is simply t keep living withut causing unnecessary harm — a useful metaphr
      fr us nw.
This leads t a pressing need: t reimagine intelligence itself. Perhaps intelligence isn’t defined by cmputatinal speed, but by depth f cnnectin. This brings me t my daughter,
fifteen mnths ld, pre-verbal. She experiences the wrld as sensatin and cnnectin. She desn’t think r judge; she is simply present. There’s a brilliance in that state we dismiss because it
desn’t lk like analysis r utput. Maybe the highest frm f intelligence is simply being fully aware — seeing things as they are, withut judgment. She understands hw t inhabit the mment fully. What des that suggest abut where wisdm truly exists?
22 .Why des the authr begin with the slime mld experiment?
A .T prve that brains are nt essential.
      B .T highlight a bilgical breakthrugh.
      C .T challenge a narrw view f intelligence.
D .T shw that nature can match human design.
23 .What des the authr suggest abut “intelligence” in paragraph 3?
A .It requires the ability t adapt t public pinin.
B .It depends n the ability t slve prblems quickly.
C .It includes ignring the needs f ther living things.
D .It invlves peaceful cexistence with the surrundings.
24 .The authr uses the example f his daughter t .
A .illustrate pre-linguistic learning B .highlight the value f pure presence
C .present humans as uniquely intelligent D .shw children’s different way f thinking
25 .Which f the fllwing is the best title f the passage?

      8 .being asked

根据文章第一段“Why are we s sure that the way we see peple, situatins and plitics is accurate, and the way ther peple see them is flishly wrng? The answer, accrding t new research by UCLA psychlgy prfessr Matthew Lieberman, lies in a regin f the brain he calls the ‘gestalt crtex,’ which helps peple make sense f infrmatin that is unclear r

根据第二段“Peple ften mistake their wn understanding f peple and events as bjective truth, rather than as merely their wn interpretatin. That phenmenn, called ‘naive realism, ’ leads peple t believe that they shuld have the final wrd n the wrld arund them.
The mind emphasizes its best answer and rejects the rest f
slutins. The mind may initially prcess the wrld like a demcracy (民主国家) where every
alternative interpretatin gets a vte, but it quickly ends up like an authritarian regime (独裁政

Lieberman prpses that the temprparietal junctin is central t cnscius experience and that it helps rganize and integrate psychlgical features f
situatins that peple see s they can make sense f them effrtlessly.

int smething narrw and fcused nly n humans.(危险不在于机器正变得过于智能,而在于 我们对“ 智能” 的理解已然变得狭隘,且仅局限于人类范畴。)”
The lngest-lived systems — frests, reefs — behave like slime
mulds. They are slw, steady and adaptive, indifferent t public nise. Their ambitin is simply
Maybe the highest frm f intelligence is simply being fully aware — seeing things as they are, withut judgment. She understands hw t inhabit the mment
This experiment questins a cherished
      assumptin: that intelligence requires a brain.(这个实验质疑了一个根深蒂固的观点:智慧必须依靠大脑。)”以及第四段“This leads t a pressing need: t reimagine intelligence itself.(这让我们迫切需要重新构想智慧本身的含义。)”
