Alan Macfarlane, a prfessr f anthrplgical science at King’s Cllege, Cambridge, has lng been fascinated by the Industrial Revlutin, a pivtal event that reshaped the wrld. Like ther histrians, he has spent decades trying t unlck the mystery: Why did this transfrmative “Big Bang” ccur in Britain in the late 18th century?
Macfarlane cmpares finding the cause f the Industrial Revlutin t pening a cmbinatin lck. He believes abut 20 key factrs are needed, including industrial technlgy, a large labr frce, efficient transprt, a wealthy middle class, a market ecnmy and a supprtive plitical system. Britain had mst f these cnditins, while ther cuntries had nly sme. These factrs were necessary but nt sufficient, s histrians suspect there must be “missing factrs.”
Here’s where the stry takes an unexpected turn: the “missing factrs” might be in yur kitchen cupbard. Macfarlane prpses tea and beer, belved British drinks, fueled the revlutin. Thanks t biled water and natural antibacterial elements in them, these drinks helped prtect peple frm water-brne diseases, allwing urban cmmunities t grw densely withut falling prey t illnesses like dysentery.
At first glance, the thery seems dd. But his research wins ver skeptics. Between 1650 — 1740, Britain’s ppulatin grew rapidly. The infant mrtality rate drpped sharply in bth cities and the cuntryside, amng peple f all scial classes. Nne f the suggested reasns culd fully explain this phenmenn. S what changed?
Macfarlane cnnected this t disease patterns. Water-brne illnesses, especially dysentery, decreased. He realized British beverages played a rle. As beer grew mre expensive because f a malt tax, pr peple had t turn t plluted water, until tea became their new chice.
Cmparing with Japan, which als had large cities but higher disease deaths, Macfarlane fund the difference. The British drank tea mre widely, which helped cntrl diseases.
This thery isn’t just abut drinks — it’s a reminder that histry’s big mments hinge n surprising, intercnnected factrs. A simple daily habit may have helped start an industrial revlutin, shwing hw the rdinary can shape the extrardinary.
      4. Why were tea and beer helpful fr Britain’s Industrial Revlutin?
      A. They created mre jb pprtunities fr pr peple.
      B. They helped reduce the risk f water-brne diseases.
      C. They imprved the taste f daily drinking water.
      D. They pushed the develpment f medical technlgy.
      5. What made pr peple turn t unsafe water befre tea became ppular?
      A. The high cst f beer due t a malt tax.B. The pr quality f beer n the market.
      C. The wide spread f serius illnesses.D. The lack f safe drinking water surces.
      6. What can we infer frm the Britain-Japan cmparisn?
      A. Japan cnsumed less tea than Britain at that time.
      B. Japan had fewer urban residents than Britain then.
      C. Drinking habits influenced disease cntrl.
      D. Industrializatin led t cleaner cities in Britain.
      7. What is the main idea f the text?
      A. Hw tea and beer may have cntributed t the Industrial Revlutin.
      B. Why Britain had a faster ppulatin grwth in the 17th century.
      C. The imprtant rle f healthy drinks in daily life.
      D. Different factrs leading t industrializatin wrldwide.
      C
When it cmes t mst new technlgies, early adpters tend t be the peple wh knw and understand the tls the best.
New research suggests that with artificial intelligence, the ppsite seems t be true.
“When yu dn’t really get what’s ging n under the hd, AI creating pems r recipes seems amazing, even magical,” says Stephanie Tully, ne f the study’s authrs at the University f Suthern Califrnia Marshall Schl f Business. “And that feeling can actually increase peple’s willingness t use it.”
That finding challenges the cmmn assumptin. “In ther dmains, like wine, the peple wh knw the mst abut it are wine lvers,” says Tully. “With AI, it’s the cntrary.”
Acrss seven studies, the researchers assessed peple’s AI literacy (知识) using different methds, including a 25-item questinnaire they created and a 17-questin test created using tw AI systems.
In ne experiment, the researchers recruited 234 undergraduates, assessed their AI literacy and then asked them t cnsider writing fur papers n tpics ranging frm hw the assassinatin (刺杀) f Archduke Franz Ferdinand led t Wrld War I t a pem abut falling in lve in Venice. The participants were then asked if they wuld r wuldn’t use an AI system t help them cmplete the assignment and t what extent. The students wh scred lwer n AI literacy were mre likely t use AI t cmplete the assigned tasks than peple with higher AI literacy wh, meanwhile, recgnized that AI is an algrithm (算法), nt magic, the researchers say.
“Understanding that AI is just pattern-matching is an effective apprach, which wipes ut the emtinal experience,” suggests Gil Appl, anther c-authr.
      8. What makes peple mre willing t use AI?
      A. An awareness f human limitatins.
      B. An understanding f new technlgies.
      C. A feeling f awe regarding AI’s ability.
      D. A sense f despair fr lack f knwledge.
      9. Which statement agrees with the findings f the new study?
      A. Writing pems is a behavir unique t humans.
      B. Adpting AI requires infrmatin frm ther dmains.
      C. Knwing AI the mst brings an attachment t it.
      D. Having less knwledge f AI raises the chances t use it.
      10. What is Gil Appel’s remark abut?
      A. Urgency t strengthen cnfidence in humans.
      B. Advice t remve unreasnable impressins.
      C. Call t better human emtinal cntrl.
      D. Actin t change AI’s dminant rle.
      11. Which f the fllwing sectins is the text prbably selected frm?
      A. Science.B. Entertainment.
      C. Literature.D. Engineering.
      D
Astrnmers have just sptted ne f the biggest spinning structures ever seen. A string f 14 galaxies spanning 5.5 millin light-years is rtating (旋转) tgether, lcated inside a spinning chunk f the csmic web (宇宙网). Such a cnsistent directin f spin is unexpected and culd cmplicate majr upcming surveys.
Scientists fund the structure in data frm the MeerKAT radi telescpe. Later, they saw that members n ne end f the string were mving tward us, while thse n the ther end were mving away. They als fund that utside its central line, the main part races arund at sme 250,000 mph (400,000 km/h). The galaxies are full f neutral hydrgen, the raw material fr star frmatin. Because hydrgen is easily disturbed, it acts like a sign, revealing the flw f gas and mmentum (动量). That makes this structure a live dem f hw galaxies grw, acquiring material and spinning up ver time.
What surprised the team is that mst f the galaxies are als turning arund their wn center in the same directin as the whle structure is spinning. Astrnmers generally think galaxies rtate randmly. But in this case, “We believe this is caused by the gravitatinal interactin between the galaxies and the structure,” says Madalina Tudrache, the leading researcher. Mre specifically, the structure is passing its spin n t the galaxies thrugh “a transfer f angular mmentum (角动量).” This prvides imprtant clues t hw a galaxy’s envirnment affects its frmatin and evlutin.
Giant spinning structures such as this culd thrw a wrench int current and future csmlgical surveys. Present prjects study the universe by expliting the fact that light frm csmic bjects is bent t Earth by the gravity f matter it passes, which can make galaxies appear t be lined up. But if galaxies are actually lined up, it culd prduce a false signal, making ur maps incrrect. “This structure breaks ur assumptin that all galaxies are randmly riented,” says Nami Rbertsn, a research assciate at the University f Edinburgh, adding that such bservatins help astrnmers test data analysis methds and explre the csmic web mre fully by cmbining multiple datasets.
      12. What d we knw abut the newly discvered structure?
      A. It is the largest spinning structure ever fund.
      B. It cnsists f 14 galaxies mving in randm directins.
      C. Its galaxies spin in the ppsite directin f the structure.
      D. Its galaxies cntain neutral hydrgen uncvering gas flw.
      13. What can be learned frm Tudrache’s wrds abut the discvery?
      A. It happens by chance and has little scientific significance.
      B. It results frm the structure transferring its spin t the galaxies.
      C. It prves that galaxies always spin in the same directin.
      D. It challenges all existing theries abut galaxy frmatin.
      14. What des the underlined phrase “thrw a wrench int” in the last paragraph mean?
      A. Cmpletely destry.B. Cause prblems fr.
      C. Slightly enhance.D. Prvide supprt fr.
      15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Hw d Galaxies Get Their Spin?
      B. Will Lined-up Galaxies Ruin Space Surveys?
      C. Giant Spinning Galaxies Fund in Csmic Web
      D. Studying Galaxies Thrugh the Csmic Web

“But yu dn’t even like t have breakfast in a restaurant,” said my husband Tim. I didn’t knw why I attempted the Wendy’s Breakfast Matching Game nline. Irnically, n my first try, I matched three images. Up ppped: CONGRATULATIONS! YOU WON FREE BREAKFAST FOR A YEAR!
Sn, a bklet f cupns arrived — free breakfast every week fr a year. What Tim said was true. I preferred cereal and ygurt in my pajamas at hme, nt dressed up in public. I didn’t even drink cffee. Tim suggested using the drive-thrugh (免下车服务), which seemed perfect fr a retiree like me wh lved slitude. Hwever, I realized I hadn’t made a new friend r changed ut f sweatpants until nn in ages. What if I used this win as a challenge t change my habits?
The next mrning, dressed in my blue jean jacket, I went inside the restaurant. When I presented my cupn fr a free breakfast, the manager was excited t have a lcal winner, intrducing me t the entire crew. Eating in public wasn’t that distasteful; it was fun! Hence, I frmed a plan: fifty-tw weeks, fifty-tw selfies in different lcatins, and fifty-tw attempts t meet smene new.
Thrugh the year, I celebrated everything frm Natinal Her Day t Hallween with creative cstumes and themed selfies. Thugh I didn’t meet crwds f strangers because mst custmers used mbile rders, I bnded deeply with the breakfast crew just by being curius abut them. Dnnie, the manager, always greeted me by name, asking, “What special day is this ne?” They learned my stry, and I learned theirs.
As the year ended, Dnnie surprised me with an fficial Wendy’s T-shirt fr my final selfie. I realized hw much I wuld have missed had I chsen the drive-thrugh. I wasn’t such an intrvert (内向的人) after all. I had cnquered my fear f scial interactin and transfrmed a simple meal int a weekly celebratin f life.
