Have yu ever tried t share a cake with thers? It sunds easy, but hw can yu make sure everyne feel pleased with their piece? This is nt nly a fd questin—it is als an interesting math prblem!
Fr tw peple, a classic rule wrks well: “I cut, yu chse.” One cuts the cake int tw pieces. The ther persn picks first. The cutter will try t make it fair, s bth feel satisfied. Hwever, it is mre difficult fr three peple. In the 1940s, mathematician Hug Steinhaus intrduced the “lne-divider” methd. First, Amy cuts the cake int three pieces that she values equally (均等地). Then Ben and Charlie check the pieces. If they bth accept different pieces, they each take ne, and Amy gets the last ne. S everyne gets a piece that they believe is fair.
Later, in the 1960s, Jhn Cnway and Jhn Selfridge develped anther methd. A piece f cake is passed frm ne persn t anther. Anyne wh thinks it is t big may cut a part ff. Any pieces cut ff are put back with the main cake. The last persn t trim it gets that piece and leaves. Then the same prcess cntinues with the rest f the cake and the remaining peple. This methd als aims at fairness.
In 2014, researchers created Spliddit, a website that uses these math rules t help peple divide things fairly. As mathematician Biashuai Ta said, “There’s a lt t be dne.” Cake-cutting shws us that even simple daily prblems can lead t deep and useful math.

      C. The ne wh values the pieces equally.D. The ne wh gets the first piece.
      28. What des the underlined wrd “trim” mean in Paragraph 3?
      A. biteB. cutC. hideD. hld
      29. Why des the writer mentin Spliddit in the last paragraph?
      A. T intrduce a new website fr sharing cakes fairly.

      C. T explain that cake-cutting prblems are still unslved.
