A massive earthquake just ne week prir had killed up t 79,000 peple and turned the valley int mud and flattened buildings. The 65-year-ld architect was there t lead settlement recnstructin, but she had never dne disaster-relief wrk befre. She was filled with anticipatin after a tw-hur flight and this five-hur drive.
Darkness had fallen befre her driver pulled int the rescue base. At 1,500 meters, it was safer frm aftershcks and rck slides than lwer grund. When she stepped ut f the car and was briefed n the villages needing immediate help, the enrmity f the task ahead hit her full frce.
Lari, Pakistan’s first female architect since 1964, was famus fr designing mdern glass and cncrete twers in Karachi. Here, thugh, she’d design earthquake-resistant hmes with stne and wd. In a simple cttage near the camp, she wuld spend the next fur mnths wrking with vlunteer architects and engineers t help displaced families build new hmes, even as temperatures drpped and snw fell.
“Yu can’t imagine the deslatin (荒凉),” Lari recalls f thse days in the muntains. Her team, ften the first t arrive n the scene, were greeted with unexpected hspitality (热情款待), given the circumstances. On ne visit, villagers pulled ut their best chairs and table rescued frm the earthquake. “They’d lst everything,” she says. “But they put this damaged table in frnt f us and cvered it with a beautiful patterned clth. And then they served us their Wrld Fd Prgramme fd: biscuits, tea and eggs.”
With each passing day, Lari was re-engineering her identity — frm “starchitect” t humanitarian. The prfessin had been gd t her, but she had grwn disappinted with prjects fr the rich. And ding disaster-relief wrk felt deeply right. S she made it her new missin.

What if yu culd stay mentally sharp in ld age? We may be clser t understanding “superagers” — peple ver 80 with the cgnitive (认知的) skills f smene decades yunger. Nrthwestern University’s SuperAging Research Prgram has identified sme cmmn brain features that help preserve this functin.
The research defines a “distinct brain-related signature” fr identifying superagers: Yu might be ne if yu’re 80 r lder and can recall at least nine wrds 30 minutes after hearing a 15-wrd list. Superagers’ brains als shw slwer thinning, with nly a 1.06% reductin ver 18 mnths cmpared t the 2.24% seen in their peers (同龄人), and a strnger chlinergic system, which is crucial fr memry, learning and mtr functin. Critically, there’s ne quality all superagers share: sciability.
This bserved sciability has bilgical rts. Superagers pssess mre vn Ecnm neurns, a type f brain cell assciated with sciability, than their peers, and even mre than yunger peple. These neurns are fund in highly scial species like whales. “Animals with strng cnnectins tend t utlive and utsmart their peers. It’s like the pack culture,” says study authr Gefen. Additinally, superagers’ thicker anterir cingulate gyrus — a brain regin linked t mtivatin rather than memry — suggests that they may be mre willing t engage in challenging tasks.
Hwever, this isn’t a lng-term study tracking participants frm yuth, s “we can’t cmpletely knw whether this high level f sciability is helping r nt,” Gefen ntes. While ther research suggests lifestyle factrs like exercise may prevent up t 45% f serius memry lss, their rle in superagers remains unclear. “When it cmes t superagers, we have mre questins than answers,” she adds.
Still, this research culd help find future treatments fr sme brain diseases. Nrthwestern’s nging wrk aims t advance this gal, including investigating what makes vn Ecnm neurns special and their rle in disease resistance.
      8. What is the key characteristic that sets superagers apart frm their peers?
      A. Rapid brain thinning. B. Strng critical thinking.
      C. Superb visual memry.D. High scial engagement.
      9. Why des the authr mentin whales in paragraph 3?
      A. T analyze human-animal ties.B. T illustrate the basis f sciability.
      C. T shw the bservatin result.D. T cntrast brains f varius species.
      10. What des Gefen mean by saying “It’s like the pack culture”?
      A. Scial bnds benefit individuals.B. Pack animals are faced with mre risks.
      C. Each species has its wn culture.D. Sciability is rted in animal behavir.
      11. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
      A. Suggestins fr further studies. B. Study limitatins.
      C. Cmparisns with ther findings.D. Experts’ cmments.

If the Amazn frest is t disappear, Altamira in Brazil is the twn where that end culd be freseen. During the regin’s develpment, a rad was cut thrugh the heart f the frest, marking an era f widespread destructin that remade the Amazn. Altamira thus became knwn in lcal media as the “champin f defrestatin.”
Nw Brazilian fficials think this expansive twn can als be the site f the frest’s rebirth. This year, the gvernment set ut t test a questin that until nw has largely been left t researchers: If left alne, can the Amazn frest restre itself? T test this assumptin, fficials clsed ff a degraded parcel f land and leased (租赁) it t a private carbn credit cmpany t safeguard and restre. “Sme f the tasks will be dne by planting trees. But mst f the restratin jb will be left t Mther Nature. It’s called passive restratin. This is pening a new mdel that may be applied acrss the state,” said Gvernr Barbalh.
The search fr slutins in the Amazn culdn’t be mre urgent. Rates f defrestatin have been drpping since the gvernment made fighting envirnmental crime a pririty, but the destructin hasn’t stpped. Nearly 6,300 square kilmeters were lst last year, bringing the ecsystem clser t what scientists warn is a tipping pint, when the Amazn is n lnger able t maintain its wn rainy ecsystem. Evidence f its arrival is springing up: dried riverbeds, frest fires, punishing drughts, and increased tree death. Scientists have predicted the frest culd experience a brad eclgical cllapse by 2050, when 10 — 47% f it will be expsed t varius disturbances that culd activate unexpected ecsystem changes.
But ther research has als prvided cause fr hpe. Despite the delicate nature f the Amazn’s ecsystem, the frest has als demnstrated a remarkable capacity fr recvery. A recent study shwed that rughly 72,000 square kilmeters f destryed frest are already in an advanced stage f natural recvery.
      12. What d we knw abut Altamira frm paragraph 1?
      A. It reshaped the Amazn area.B. It saw the rebirth f the frest.
      C. It benefited frm the new rad.D. It headed the frest destructin.
      13. What is the cre belief behind passive restratin?
      A. Nature knws the right way.B. Cmpanies make better guardians.
      C. Tree-planting is a quicker fix.D. A hands-ff gvernment is the key.
      14. What makes it critical t restre the Amazn rainfrest?
      A. Defrestatin rates are ever-rising.B. The rainy ecsystem has cllapsed.
      C. A pint f n return is appraching.D. Spring has brught lts f disasters.
      15. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Can Private Cmpanies Help? B. Can Passive Restratin Last?
      C. Can Altamira Stp Defrestatin?D. Can Amazn Avid Disappearing?
