There is a famus stry abut hw Walt Disney was inspired t build Disneyland. The stry ges that during an afternn visit t Griffith Park lcated near the Burbank Studis, Walt tk a seat while his tw yung daughters rde the merry-g-rund. Walt thught there shuld be a place where bth children and their parents culd enjy spending sme time tgether in an envirnment that wuld be bth entertaining and pleasing t the eye, s with this thught came the idea fr
      Disneyland.
Walt’s riginal plan was t build an eight-acre park lcated near the Burbank Studis that wuld be a place fr his emplyees and their families. Thse plans were put n hld because f the start f Wrld War II. By 1952, Walt had created a special department t build the park.
Finally in 1953, the first steps in building the park happened when Walt hired the Stanfrd
Research Institute t make a survey t determine the best pssible lcatin fr the future park.
Cnsidering ppulatin grwth and the future freeway cnstructin, they finally fund a lcatin in Anaheim and 160 acres f land were bught fr the site f the new park.
The building f the park was very expensive and t create funding fr the prject Walt
develped the idea f the “Walt Disney’s Disneyland” televisin shw. It turned ut t be a
marvelus idea — nt nly gaining the mney t build the park but als presenting the park t the American public.
Cnstructin fficially began n July 21, 1954, and it was an ambitius
building schedule f less than ne year t cmplete the new park fr the prjected pening day.
Walt watched ver the park’s cnstructin and prgress cntinued with just a few minr hld-ups. Finally, the park was ready fr the Opening Day n July 17, 1955.
4 .What inspired Walt Disney t build Disneyland?
A .The special design f Griffith Park.
      B .A trip t a park with his daughters.
C .Requests frm his family and emplyees.
D .The idea t build a park fr his daughters.

Readers may be familiar with the humrus idea that humans are nly the third-cleverest
species n Earth after mice and dlphins. But perhaps Duglas Adams shuld have included
dlphins’ cetacean cusins. In a paper just published in Open Mind, CETI researchers describe a strikingly human-like feature in whale cmmunicatin. Sperm whales cmmunicate using a series f clicks researchers call “cdas”, which lk a lt like vwels in human languages.
Fr linguists, vwels are characterized by the free flw f air thrugh a vibrating vcal
tract. In cntrast, cnsnants invlve disruptins fthe airflw. A vwel’s basic pitch(technically called F0)is determined by the speaker’s sex and bdy size. But by mving tngue and lips we
shape the sund int higher-pitched “frmants”(F1, F2, F3, etc.). Whether we hear an “ah” r an “ee” depends n the relatinship between these frmants.
T humans, sperm-whale cdas d nt sund like pitches at all; the clicks are much t
infrequent and irregular. The clicks becme a cntinuus tne nly when they ccur 20 t 40
times per secnd. But when the whales’ silences were remved in sftware, the researchers culd cnsider them as pitches nevertheless, and lk mre clsely at their ther qualities.
The next step was taken with the help f artificial intelligence(AI). The researchers used an AI system trained t learn human language t examine the cdas. Gasper Begus, a linguist at the University f Califrnia and the study’s lead authr, says that the AI led them t study the pitch
patterns f the clicks — nes that wrk like human vwel sunds.
Sure enugh, the whale cdas cntained tw sund patterns resembling thse in the F1 and F2 frmants f human vwels, but at a much lwer pitch. Based n this resemblance, the
researchers called them the a-cda and i-cda vwels. They even fund that whales culd prduce diphthngs — tw vwels gliding quickly frm ne t anther, like the ah-ee sund in English
wrds like “ride” and “time”. The whales d all this ften in what researchers call
      “cnversatins”.
Exactly what the whales may be saying t each ther remains unknwn — althugh
wrking that ut is CETI’s eventual gal. That will require a large bdy f vcalizatins t study, as well as an equally big number f bservatins f hw the animals behave and interact with each ther.
8 .Why des the authr refer t Duglas Adams’s jke abut mice, dlphins and humans?
      A .T illustrate a pint B .T give an example
      C .T make a cmparisn D .T intrduce a tpic
9 .What des the wrd “disruptins” underlined in paragraph 2 mean?
A .cmplete stps B .breaks in flw C .increases in speed D .extra energy
10 .What d we knw abut sperm whales frm the passage?
A .They cmmunicate in quite a similar way t humans.
B .They prduce cntinuus clicks that sund like pitches.
C .They create click patterns resembling human vwels.
D .They culd prduce diphthngs like “ride” and “time”.
11 .What can we infer abut the CETI researchers frm the last paragraph?
A .They have paid mre attentin t the whales’ vcalizatins than t their behavirs.
B .They have uncvered the nature f the whales’ scial behavirs and interactins.
C .They will decde the whales’ calls by bserving their behavirs and interactins.
D .They will carry ut mre research t better understand the whales’ cnversatins.
      D
As the wrld’s appetite fr electrnic devices grws ever bigger, e-waste is raising alarms. Accrding t a UN reprt, 62 millin tns f e-waste was generated in 2022, enugh t fill 1.5
millin trucks. Mst fit ended up in landfills r was burnt. There is als a shcking ecnmic
lss, as an estimated 62 billin US dllars’ wrth f reusable resurces — including rare earth
elements — are lst in the prcess. Currently, just 1% f the wrld’s demand fr these elements is met by e-waste recycling.
With e-waste rising five times faster than recycling rates, new slutins t the prblem are urgent. Aquafade culd be ne — a new type f plastic that culd be used t cver electrnics
such as keybards and disslves (溶解) cmpletely in water in abut six hurs when the device is n lnger needed, making it easier t recycle the mst valuable cmpnents.
The inspiratin fr Aquafade came frm dishwasher pds (凝珠). T explre further,
Wangsaputra and c-inventr Jn Sang Lee teamed up with tw material scientists at Imperial
Cllege Lndn. They identified a fd-safe, bidegradable material — PVOH. But PVOH alne was nt sufficient t slve the prblem. The main challenge was t make a material that can
disslve in water but is als waterprf (防水). After a series f attempts, they made a special
bidegradable cating applied t the PVOH uter shell. This new material — PVOH with the
special waterprf cating — is exactly Aquafade. Its disslving prcess is simple; nce yu take ff just ne screw frm the prduct, that creates a leak, and when yu put it in water, it will
disslve after five t six hurs, leaving behind milky water and the mst valuable electrnic parts f the prduct.
Fr nw, Aquafade is duble the cst f regular plastic. But Wangsaputra said that mass
prductin will make it cheaper. Peter Edwards, prfessr at the University f Oxfrd, wh’s nt invlved with Aquafade, called it “an interesting develpment,” but wndered whether the
disslved plastic will persist in the envirnment and ultimately end up as micrplastic.
12 .What d we knw abut e-waste frm paragraph 1?
A .It has been effectively recycled wrldwide.
B .Its annual prductin has reduced sharply.
C .Mst f rare earth elements in it are recycled.
D .The way t deal with it causes great ecnmic lss.
13 .What is an advantage f Aquafade?
A .It disslves in water t help recycling.
B .It makes devices wrk mre efficiently.
C .It helps prduce cheaper electrnic prducts.
D .It prevents plastic frm entering the envirnment.
14 .What is mainly presented in paragraph 3?
A .The limitatins f PVOH. B .The creatin f Aquafade.
C .The benefits f the waterprf cating. D .The cmparisn f tw materials.
15 .What can be inferred abut the future applicatin f Aquafade?
A .It will sn take the place f regular plastic.
B .Its prductin cst will stay high in the future.
C .It has ptential but still faces uncertainties.
D .It has gained wide recgnitin frm experts.

I’m Lila, a vlunteer in Maple Leaf Cmmunity. Our neighbrhd, nce a cmfrtable and tidy place, lies in the heart f the city. But lately, the garden and the empty crners near the entrance have turned int a dirty place, cvered with all kinds f garbage.
At first, it was just a few candy wrappers and plastic bttles left behind. But sn, mre and mre peple started drpping unwanted things there — ld shes, brken bxes, and even leftver fd. The terrible smell f the garbage spread everywhere, making it impssible fr neighbrs t walk past cmfrtably. What’s wrse, the dirty water frm the garbage seeped (渗入) int the
garden sil, killing the beautiful rses and making the small stne funtain smelly.
I tried my best t persuade the residents t help clean it up, but n ne was willing t spare any time. Even when I tk phts f the dead rses and the smelly funtain t shw them hw
bad the situatin was, they still turned a blind eye.
One Saturday mrning, I ran int Le, a yung architect wh grew up in this cmmunity

garbage, his face fell with shck and disappintment. “We have t fix it.” His determinatin gave me new hpe, s we decided t hld a cmmunity meeting tgether.
The meeting rm was crwded but quiet. I std up first, hlding up the phts I’d taken. “Our cmmunity is dying,” I said, my vice tight. “The garbage isn’t just ugly — it’s making us
sick and destrying the place we call hme. We shuld take immediate actin.” Mr. Hale, a retired wrker wh’s lived here fr 30 years, shk his head and said, “Cleaning this up will take t
much time and energy. It’s useless t even try.” His wrds made the thers whisper in agreement. I felt my hpe dying fast, and lked ver at Le helplessly.

Readers may be familiar with the humrus idea that humans are
nly the third-cleverest species n Earth after mice and dlphins. But perhaps Duglas Adams
shuld have included dlphins ’ cetacean cusins. In a paper just published in Open Mind, CETI

前一句“Fr linguists, vwels are characterized by the free flw f air thrugh a vibrating
      vcal tract.( 对于语言学家来说,元音的特点是空气在振动的声道中自由流动。)”
根据第一段中“Sperm whales cmmunicate using a series f clicks researchers call “cdas”, which lk a lt like vwels in human languages.( 抹香鲸通过一系列的咔哒声进行交流,研究人员将这些咔哒声称为“尾音” ,它们看起来与人类语言中的元音非常相似。)”以及第五段中“Sure enugh, the whale cdas cntained tw sund patterns resembling thse in
      the F1 and F2 frmants f human vwels, but at a much lwer pitch.( 果然,鲸鱼的尾音包含了两种类似于人类元音 F1 和 F2 形成频率的音调模式,但音调要低得多。)”
根据最后一段“Exactly what the whales may be saying t each ther remains unknwn — althugh wrking that ut is CETI’s eventual gal. That will require a large bdy f vcalizatins t study, as well as an equally big number f bservatins f hw the animals
behave and interact with each ther.( 至于鲸鱼之间究竟在彼此传达什么信息, 目前仍不得而知——尽管弄清楚这一点是 CETI 的最终目标。

故选 A。
根据第三段中“The inspiratin fr Aquafade came frm dishwasher pds (凝珠). T explre further, Wangsaputra and c-inventr Jn Sang Lee teamed up with tw material scientists at Imperial Cllege Lndn. They identified a fd-safe, bidegradable material —
PVOH. But PVOH alne was nt sufficient t slve the prblem. The main challenge was t make a material that can disslve in water but is als waterprf (防水). After a series f attempts, they made a special bidegradable cating applied t the PVOH uter shell. This new material —
PVOH with the special waterprf cating — is exactly Aquafade. Its disslving prcess is
simple; nce yu take ff just ne screw frm the prduct, that creates a leak, and when yu put it in water, it will disslve after five t six hurs, leaving behind milky water and the mst valuable electrnic parts f the prduct.(Aquafade 的灵感来自洗碗机凝珠。
Fr nw, Aquafade is duble the cst f regular plastic. But Wangsaputra said that mass prductin will make it cheaper. Peter Edwards, prfessr at the
University f Oxfrd, wh’s nt invlved with Aquafade, called it “an interesting develpment,” but wndered whether the disslved plastic will persist in the envirnment and ultimately end up as micrplastic.(目前,Aquafade 的成本是普通塑料的两倍。
