When I was 14, my parents made me vlunteer at Greenfield Animal Shelter as punishment fr skipping
maths class. “Yu need t learn respnsibility,” Mum said, handing me a brightly clured unifrm that was t big.
The shelter smelled like wet fur and disinfectant (消毒剂); and my jb was cleaning cages - washing fd frm
      bwls and sticky flrs.
On my third Saturday, I nticed a glden retriever (寻回犬) named Max. His cage card said his wner had
passed away, and he’d been at the shelter fr three mnths. Unlike ther dgs, Max cvered in the crner, shaking
at every nise. When I entered his dghuse, he flattened himself int a shaking pancake.
“He’s sweet but scared f everything,” Ms. Trres, a shelter wrker, tld me. She shwed me ld injuries n
his legs frm when he’d tried t bite thrugh the bars.
I decided t spend my breaks with Max. At first, I just sat near his fd bwl, reading alud frm a bk. His
breathing slwed t whispers. Sn, he let me tuch his ears. When I drpped my keys, he stepped back but stayed.
I brught him a tennis ball, and we played fetch utside. His tail wagged a little mre each time. One rainy day, he
licked (舔) my hand, and I felt like I was ging t cry.
      第 4页/共 17页
Then ne mrning, a family stpped at Max’s dghuse. The yungest girl called him a “glden clud”. Max
didn’t hide. He walked frward, tail wagging, and licked her fingers.
As they filled ut the adptin papers, I hid in the strage clset, hugging my knees. I heard their laughter, the
jingle f Max’s new cllar, and the sund f the dr shutting. When I came ut, Ms. Trres smiled. “Yu did gd,
      kid,” she said.
Max taught me that curage isn’t abut being fearless — it’s abut taking small steps twards smething
bigger. Nw, whenever I’m scared t try smething new. I remember his wagging tail and the day he trusted the
      wrld again.

A primary schl in nrth Devn with a brand-new mud play area hit the headlines last week.
“We felt that ur children needed smething better at playtime,” said the head teacher, Amy Frst, “The
playgrund befre was pristine (整洁的) but there was nthing fr them t d. As schls, we have been fearful f
allwing ur children t take risks. Children dn’t learn what risk is and hw t manage risk.” T change this, the
schl designed different znes fr climbing and muddy play.
Frst said there had been a few cmments frm peple wh fund it “difficult t adjust”. but parents were
greatly supprtive. “My sn is caked in mud but he’s having fun!” ne parent cmmented. Anther said, “We’d
rather d extra laundry and see them thrive (茁壮成长).”
      第 5页/共 17页
Children tday have less access t unstructured utdr play than past generatins did. Helen Ddd, a
prfessr f child psychlgy at the University f Exeter, said, “The decline in children getting muddy is part f
ur risk aversin (风险规避). We want t keep children safe, s we stp children frm ding the things that
children naturally d. If we want t give children space t cnnect with nature, they need t d that in an
unrestricted way, and a cnsequence is that they might get muddy.”
There’s als research abut the benefits f being in cntact with mud, just in terms f the bilgy f what’s in
the mud, and hw it affects ur immune (免疫的) system, als, in terms f sensry things. Lts f children nw
have sensry difficulties. They dn’t like the feel f different things, which might cme frm being kept verly
      clean.
Children had never befre seen s much and experienced s little, said Fllett. “All f their experiences are
secndary, thrugh screens shut in bedrms. What they’re lacking is real primary experience, tuching, feeling,
practising. Yu knw that feeling f squeezing a handful f mud, and it leaking ut thrugh yur fingers?”
      8. What is the purpse f building a mud play area in the primary schl?
      A. T upgrade schl facilities. B. T teach children t learn abut risks.
      C. T satisfy the parents’ needs. D. T hit the headlines f the newspaper.
      9. What prevents children’s utdr play?
      A. Generatin gap. B. Behaviur cde.
      C. Schl regulatin. D. T much cncern.
      10. What d we knw abut mud play?
      A. It has becme mre ppular. B. It can cause severe cnsequences.
      C. It may strengthen immune system. D. It leads t sensry difficulties.
      11. What’s the text mainly abut?
      A. Why children experience s less. B. Hw parents becme s psitive.
      C. Why kids shuld be allwed t play in mud. D. Hw cnnectin with nature culd be built.

It is a strange cincidence that as humans attempt t greatly reduce their carbn emissins (排放) they are als
rushing t develp a technlgy that culd, in thery, cnsume an unlimited amunt f energy.
Ding things against facts is a dangerus game, but yu can picture a wrld in which, having chsen t start
dealing with climate change prperly in the 1990s, we wuld be just wrapping up the gentle path t net-zer
emissins in time fr a rapid AI increase fuelled by green pwer. Instead, we find urselves at risk f running a
      第 6页/共 17页
      21st-century technlgy n a 20th-century energy supply.
If yu live in the US, every time yu use an AI mdel, arund 20 per cent f the electricity required will be
prduced by burning cal. The explsive grwth f AI makes this an even mre pressing cncern. Accrding t
ne analysis, if Ggle chse t shift t an entirely Al-pwered search business, its electricity cnsumptin culd
      match that f sme cuntries.
Such estimates may be magnified, but evidence f rising pwer cnsumptin frm AI is all arund. Micrsft
is placing bets n nuclear plants t pwer its data centres, while the English gvernment has prmised t bst its
natinal cmputing capacity by 50 per cent by 2025, which wuld help it keep pace with rapid AI develpments in
      the wrld.
Thankfully, we may sn reach a turning pint. As is reprted, this year the glbal pwer department came
clse t reaching peak greenhuse gas emissins, as the switch frm fssil (化石) fuels t clean and renewable
surces is well underway. The questin nw is whether we can quicken the pace f decarbnisatin (脱碳) t
match the cming grwth in energy cnsumptin as AI becmes increasingly embedded (把……嵌入) in ur
sciety. Silicn Valley’s intelligent machines may grab the headlines and the imaginatin, but the peple really
inventing the future are wrking n the energy sectr.
      12. What can we learn frm Paragraph 2?
      A. The reality is far frm what we expected. B. Carbn emissins have been reduced a lt.
      C. The rapid AI increase brings many benefits. D. Climate change has t be dealt with prperly.
      13. Why is electricity cnsumptin a majr cncern?
      A. 20%f the pwer is prduced by burning cal in the US.
      B. There is n limit n tech-giants’ electricity cnsumptin.
      C. Many cuntries haven’t switched t clean energy.
      D. Extensive use f AI will cnsume mre energy.
14 What des the underlined wrd “magnified” in Paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Overstated. B. Undervalued. C. Reasnable. D. Cmmn.
      15. What wuld be ur primary task befre we reach a turning pint?
      A. Achieving net-zer emissins as sn as pssible.
      B. Balancing energy-hungry AI with decarbnisatin.
      C. Shifting t a fully AI-pwered search business.
      第 7页/共 17页
      D. Creating an unlimited energy-cnsuming technlgy.
