Last Sunday mrning, I was sitting n the sfa in my parent’s living rm. Befre me n the tea table was a wrn jurnal f thin and disclred pages. It was my grandfather’s jurnal and nw belngs t my father. My grandfather had passed away in the mnths leading up t my birth. I never gt t visit the places he had frequented and the peple wh had been a part f his life’s jurney.
I was nw abut t enter his wrld, thrugh the wrds he had left behind. Within minutes, I was captivated by the pwer f the written wrds. In the magical script befre me, I was transprted t anther age when fd was an everyday art, planned, prepared and enjyed in the cmpany f thers, and a time when peple had the heart t pause their wn lives t embrace each ther’s struggles. All this was cnveyed t me in the beauty f the wrds that flwed tgether t cnnect with the writer’s mind and understand the wrld they lived in.
This kind f writing seems t be lst n us tday. We have gtten used t writing in bite-sized pieces fr a public lking fr entertainment, and hungry fr infrmatin. N wnder, there are nearly 200 millin blggers n the Internet and a new blg is created smewhere in the wrld every half a secnd. Instead f adding t ur cllective wisdm, mst f these writings reflect the superficiality (肤浅) and impatience f ur day and age.
This nt nly rbs us f the skill f writing impressive essays, it als prevents us frm explring what is indeed imprtant. Writing humbles us in a way that is vital fr ur character grwth, by reminding us abut the limits f the self and ur apprpriate place in the vast flw f life.
Writing frees us by helping us explre the unknwn s that we really pen up t the magic f the wrld arund us. I saw all f this in the writing f my grandfather. And I’ve seen it again and again in the writings f the greatest thinkers f humanity. Their writing reflects deep thught n issues f human imprtance.
      4. Accrding t the authr, what is a characteristic f the age described in his grandfather’s jurnal?
      A. Mutual supprt.B. Artistic fd.

When my lder sn Jack was in high schl, he accepted a summer jb selling slar panels dr-t-dr. My first reactin was t tell him nt t d it. I felt prtective — afraid f the rejectin he wuld face n drsteps all summer lng. I just culdn’t see hw my thughtful sn, a gd athlete and straight-A student, culd cpe with s much failure.
Instead, we can learn t let kids fail well. Give yur kids space t fail in cntained, safe ways, and teach them t embrace and learn frm the failures they experience. Shw them hw t face frward and g after the next challenge with renewed insight and energy.
This mindset — what psychlgist Carl Dweck calls a grwth mindset — is an invaluable resurce fr children, particularly in a fast-changing wrld. When my yunger sn Nick, learning t ski at abut age eight, asked me t watch him cme dwn the slpe, I dutifully std at the bttm and waited. After his shrt run, he lked up and asked, “Hw did I d?” My respnse? “Yu did great!” But instead f the smile I’d expected, Nick lked puzzled, even disappinted, as he replied, “Can’t yu tell me what I did wrng s I can get better?”
Nw I was the ne smiling. Smehw, as a parent, I had helped nurture this grwth mindset. Intimately familiar with Dweck’s research as a scial psychlgist myself, I shuld have cmmented n his prcess (“Yu were in cntrl f yur speed, and yu lked like yu were enjying yurself. If yu bend yur knees a little mre and keep yur chest facing dwnhill, yur frm will be better”) rather than praising his results (“Yu did great!”). And nw Nick shwed me that what I was trying t d was wrking.
Hw d yu start? Stp yurself frm reactively prtecting yur child frm failure. Ntice yur instincts, which, while valuable in s many cntexts, are nt helpful in thers. Initially, ask yurself, “What is the risk here? What kind f failure wuld this be?” t help yu verride yur instinct t shield children frm life’s mst valuable lessns. Encurage them t take smart risks Create (and help them create) pprtunities t stretch. Supprt their grwth as they d s, while helping them think thrugh the pssible utcmes f chices they are cnsidering.
      Then let them chse.
      8. What was the authr’s reactin t Jack’s summer jb?
      A. She encuraged Jack t take the smart risk.
      B. She wrried abut Jack’s ability t handle rejectin.
      C. She thught it wuld help Jack build a strng will.
      D. She cnsidered the cntext f the pssible failure.
      9. What des the authr want t shw with Nick’s stry?
      A. Nick is naturally gifted at skiing.B. Dweck’s research is very useful.
      C. Her psitive feedbacks t Nick wrked.D. Timely praise makes a difference t kids.
      10. What des the authr advise first befre acting?
      A. Assess risks.B. Prtect kids.C. Let kids chse.D. Create chances.
      11. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
      A. Dweck’s Grwth Mindset Thery n Failure.
      B. Let Kids Fail A Lessn in Building Cnfidence.
      C. The Essential Values Gained frm Kids’ Failure.
      D. Parent’s Guide t Fstering Kids’ Grwth Mindset.

They dn’t drink. They dn’t get distracted,” he said.
Fr the freseeable future, such services prbably will need t run n predetermined rutes, with regular stps, he said. It wuld be mre cmplicated t have autnmus vehicles travel n demand t unfamiliar addresses ut in the cuntryside.
Nw, Petersn herself takes the vans t stres, restaurants, cmmunity meetings, hckey games — “and church, f curse, every Sunday and Wednesday,” she said. She said the prject has brught Grand Rapids residents tgether t imagine a mre inclusive future. “It’s nt just a fancy car,” she said.

      14. What’s Tm Fley’s attitude twards autnmus vehicles?
      A. He is dubtful abut their safety.
      B. He is supprtive f their use in rural areas.
      C. He is psitive abut their ptential.
      D. He is uncncerned abut their develpment.
      15. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?

      B. The use f the vans is limited t peple with a disability.
