By the late 1960s, abstract painter Harld Chen had represented Britain at imprtant festivals with his il paintings and was seeking a new challenge. “Maybe there are mre interesting things ging n utside my studi than inside it,” he thught. Chen turned frm the canvas (画布) t the screen, using cmputers t find new ways f creating art. In the late 1960s, he created a prgram that he named Aarn. It was the first artificial intelligence sftware in the wrld f fine art, and Chen first presented Aarn in 1974 at the University f Califrnia, Berkeley. Aarn’s wrk has since graced museums frm the Tate Gallery in Lndn t the Sand Francisc Museum f Mdern Art.
Nw, with AI dminating the headlines, a new exhibitin at New Yrk’s Whitney Museum f American Art, “Harld Chen: Aarn,” running thrugh June 2024, draws attentin t Chen’s pineering wrk. The Whitney is ffering smething deeper than mst previus Aarn exhibits: a real-time experience, in which visitrs can watch the sftware prduce art.
Chen seeded Aarn with all srts f knwledge: abut basic bjects, physics, and fundamental techniques f drawing. Aarn uses this knwledge t fllw instructins, cmplete tasks, and make decisins like human beings --- a very different apprach frm tday’s generative AI art prgrams, which dn’t draw frm scratch (从头开始) but rather rely n databases f images. Versins f Aarn still generate utput, but anything dne after Chen’s death in 2016 is nt cnsidered genuine.
The Whitney is shwcasing tw versins f Chen’s sftware, alng with the art that each prduced befre Chen died. The 2001 versin, Aarn KCAT, generates images f figures and plants and prjects them nt a wall mre than ten feet high, while the 2007 versin prduces jungle-like scenes. The sftware will als create art physically, n paper, fr the first time since the 1990s. “It is abslutely thrilling,” said Christiane Paul, the museum’s directr f digital art, “t have ne f thse remarkable treasures f digital art in the cllectin.”
      24. What was Aarn brn ut f?
      A. Harld’s curisity.B. The museum’s dnatin.

Peru is prepared t apprve new laws that wuld make it easier t investigate and punish researchers wh engage in academic cheating, including paying t have their names added t a paper.
The mve cmes as Peru’s natinal science agency seeks t crack dwn n authrship buying and ther dishnest practices. It recently remved tw scientists accused f dishnest publicatins frm a natinal registry that is key t receiving gvernment spnsr, jb prmtins, and salary bnuses. And fficials are investigating mre than 170 ther researchers at a Peruvian media reprt claimed were invlved in academic miscnduct, including 72 listed n the natinal registry wh wrk at 14 universities in Peru.
The new laws will empwer universities and gvernment fficials t punish such behavir. Dishnest publishing practices “transcend mere mral misbehavir” because they enable researchers t btain gvernment and private funding withut telling the truth, says Edward Málaga Trill, a member f Cngress wh is the driving frce behind the bills, which lawmakers are expected t finalize early this year. “These individuals are perating academic cheating.”
Peru’s academic cmmunity has been struggling with a rising tide f false authrship and related prblems. One cause, sme researchers say, is a 2014 law that aimed t stimulate research by rewarding researchers wh bst their publishing utput. Fr example, under a scring system used by universities, researchers can earn five pints fr authrship in a high-impact jurnal, and tw pints when the jurnal is lwer impact. A massing pints can bring bnus payments and career prmtin.
Signs f dishnest publishing can be bvius, ntes Nahuel Mnteblanc, president f Cientifics. pe, a Peruvian grup that investigates miscnduct. Many f the papers cited by Punt Final have numerus c-authrs frm different natins with few prir publicatins n the same subject. “If yur clleague cnsistently publishes 20 articles a year with c-authrs frm ther cuntries, that’s highly suspect,” Mnteblanc says.
      28. What actin did Peru take recently t address academic cheating?
      A. Fining 72 ffenders fr academic dishnesty.
      B. Disqualifying 2 scientists frm a natinal registry.
      C. Punishing 170 researchers fr academic miscnduct.
      D. Withdrawing gvernment fund frm 14 universities.
      29. Which f the fllwing is clsest in meaning t “transcend” in paragraph 3?
      A. Change.B. Strengthen.C. G beynd.D. Apprve f.
      30. What d we knw abut the 2014 law in Peru?
      A. It advcated a fair scring system.B. It applied t high-impact jurnals.
      C. It led t an increase in false authrship.D. It aimed t punish dishnest publishing.
      31. The mst suspicin might be given t a prductive researcher with _________.
      A. career prmtinB. cnsistent research fcus
      C. few citatins by Punt FinalD. c-authrs frm varius cuntries
      D
Evlutin (进化) can perfrm extrardinary makevers; tday’s airbrne sngbirds evlved frm the wingless, earthbund dinsaurs that wandered millins f years ag. But sme rganisms seem t be unchanged—in ther wrds, escape natural selectin. The celacanth, a mdern-day fish, is nearly identical t its 410-millin-year-ld fssils.
Scientists have lng wndered hw these species d s. It has been assumed that natural selectin keeps sme species unchanged by selecting fr mderate r average qualities (stabilizing selectin) rather than selecting fr mre extreme qualities that wuld cause a species t change (directinal selectin).
But a study published in the Natinal Academy f Sciences USA cntradicts this idea, shwing that evlutin cnstantly favrs different qualities in seemingly unchanging animals t imprve shrt-term survival. In the lng term, thugh, “all that evlutin cancels ut and leads t n change,” says the study’s lead authr, James Strud.
Strud and his clleagues studied fur lizard (蜥蜴) species, all relatively unchanged fr 20 millin years. The researchers caught members f these ppulatins every six mnths fr three years. They measured each lizard’s head size, leg length, mass and height, as well as the size f its sticky tes (脚趾头), nting which individuals survived. Strud expected t bserve stabilizing selectin at wrk preserving mderate qualities. Instead he saw clearer evidence f directinal selectin: sme lizards with unique characteristics, such as stickier tes, survived better.
The study ffers “a gd explanatin fr why we see what we think is stabiliring selectin,” says Tadashi Fukami, an eclgist studying evlutin at Stanfrd University. Many new qualities are evlving in the shrt term, but they dn’t prvide a crucial advantage ver the lng term. In ther wrds, species staying unchanged may simply have fund the best pssible cmbinatin f qualities fr lasting success in their envirnment. S what happens when the lizards’ envirnment changes mre dramatically? T help answer this bigger questin, Strud is still making trips t visit the lizards.
      32. Why des the authr mentin the “celacanth fish” in paragraph 1?
      A. T demnstrate the pwer f evlutin.B. T add evidence t natural selectin.
      C. T give an example f unchanged species.D. T prve species’ extrardinary makevers.
      33. What’s the fcus f paragraph 2?
      A. Unslved mysteries.B. A cmmn belief.C. A sharp cntrast.D. Unique Characteristics.
      34. Hw did Strud cnduct his research?
      A. By analyzing lizard fssils.B. By tracking research bjects.
      C. By illustrating stabilizing selectin.D. By categrizing qualities f lizards.
      35. What will Strud prbably d in the future?
      A. Make trips t visit lizard experts.B. Summarize average features f lizards.
      C. Reveal the best cmbinatins f qualities.D. Examine lizards under extreme cnditins.
