I shut dwn and clsed myself ff. I became really cld,” he said.

Lukumu abslutely changed my life.”

Peple have been trying t create glwing (发光) plants fr decades. The challenge is making the glw bright enugh fr ur eyes t see. Last year, US bitech cmpany Light Bi launched the Firefly Petunia, the first genetically engineered glwing plant t g n sale. It claims that the plant’s brightness is “similar t mnlight”, but judging frm phts n scial media, it’s nwhere near as bright as a full mn.
There is a reasn why this is s difficult. Plants get their energy frm light, but phtsynthesis (光合作用) is wildly inefficient. It’s estimated that mst plants capture less than 2 percent f the light that falls n them, and they need part f it t survive and grw. That leaves precius little t transfrm back int light.
Given this fact, plants will never glw bright enugh t take the place f streetlights. T slve this, a few grups have instead been trying t physically add phsphrs (磷光体), a type f light-string material that glws in the dark, t adult plants, which are much mre efficient than phtsynthesis. The prblem is getting the phsphr chemicals evenly distributed inside the leaves. But nw it’s fund that such distributin is easily achieved in certain plants, s brightly phsphrescent plants f varius clrs are created by adding phsphrs int each leaf by hand.
But making plants glw by physically adding phsphrs int them is cheating. At the very least, the glw will becme weaker if these plants survive and grw larger. There is als a ptential pllutin issue when the plants die and are thrwn ut.
If the plants were genetically engineered t make their wn lng-lasting phsphrs that are fully bidegradable, it wuld be a different stry. In fact, giving plants this ability might even bst the efficiency f phtsynthesis. Being able t temprarily “stre” light culd help keep the light steady, transfrm unusable wave lengths int usable nes and allw phtsynthesis t cntinue int the night. One day, perhaps entire fields will glw in the dark.
      8. What makes it hard fr plants t glw brightly?
      A. The lw light-use efficiency.B. The influence f the envirnment.
      C. The cmplexity f plant grwth.D. The lng phtsynthetic prcess.
      9. Hw d sme grups imprve the brightness f the plants?
      A. By thickening their leaves.B. By prviding mre artificial light.
      C. By filling sme special chemicals.D. By lengthening their expsure t sunlight.
      10. What can we learn abut phsphrescent plants?
      A. They are sensitive t light.B. They have limited clr variety.
      C. They are expensive t maintain.D. They d harm t the envirnment.
      11. What’s the functin f the last paragraph?
      A. T stress the achievement in plant research.
      B. T present ways f taking full advantage f light.
      C. T explre the future applicatin f glwing plants.
      D. T prpse a new research fcus in creating glwing plants.

An annual reprt n health and climate change published in The Lancet fund that an estimated 2.5 millin peple die each year as a result f air pllutin. It als fund that heat expsure deaths have risen sharply by 23 percent since the 1990s. In ttal, 12 ut f 20 health indicatrs fell t recrd levels fr tw years. All health risks f climate change are wrsening.
Despite the large numbers f deaths assciated with fssil fuel pllutin, gvernments still spent $956 billin funding il and gas cmpanies in 2023. “We are seeing the expansin f il and gas glbally and that is threatening ur survival,” said Dr Marina Rmanell, Executive Directr f the Lancet Cuntdwn.
New analysis shws the recently drafted natinal climate plans frm mre than 60 cuntries fall shrt f what is needed t prevent the wrst impacts f climate breakdwn. Taken tgether, these plans t reduce carbn ver the next decade wuld nly reduce glbal emissins (排放) by abut 10 per cent by 2035 cmpared with 2019 levels. Dr Rmanell said, “The mst cncerning finding is the declining f climate change cmmitments and actins frm wrld leaders. Our ppulatin is at great risk. In the UK, half f Natinal Health Service (NHS) hspitals have already been frced t clse wards (病房) r change services due t flding, while thers struggle during heatwaves.”
Despite these warnings, sme prgress has been made. Cleaner air due t cal phase-uts has saved an estimated 160,000 lives annually, and renewable energy generatin reached recrd highs. The green ecnmy is nw three times faster-grwing than fssil fuels, supprting mre than 16 millin jbs in 2023.
“We’re already seeing big benefits frm tackling climate change. We need t ensure that the transitin supprts peple and their well-being and their health. Otherwise the transitin will be useless. With every mment f inactin, thse threats will wrsen, and prtecting peple will becme increasingly challenging, if nt impssible,” said Dr Rmanell.
      12. The authr lists the data in paragraph 1 t shw ________.
      A. the speed f glbal warmingB. the benefits f climate plicies
      C. the rise f human health indicatrsD. the impact f climate change n human health
      13. What can be inferred abut gvernments frm paragraph 2?
      A. They invest insufficiently in public service.
      B. They take little cnsideratin f public health.
      C. They plan t limit the expansin f il and gas.
      D. They are cperating clsely with health experts.
      14. What is Dr. Rmanell’s attitude twards the natinal climate plans?
      A. Dubtful.B. Optimistic.C. Critical.D. Objective.
      15. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. The ecnmic cst f climate inactin.
      B. Warnings and prgress in the climate crisis.
      C. A scientific guide t phasing ut fssil fuels.
      D. The envirnmental impact f renewable energy.

Nwadays we are quick t take ffense, slw t frgive, and ften t prud t admit when we are wrng. Yet perhaps if we brushed up ur aplgy skills, we culd help relieve the tensin in ur cmmunities and ur wrld, ne hnest admissin at a time.
____16____ They acknwledge the wrth f the persn we have wrnged and the shared respect that still cnnects us, even when trust has been brken. In 2016, Prfessr Ry Lewicki and clleagues examined what makes an aplgy effective. They identified six essential elements: Expressin f regret; Explanatin f what went wrng; Acknwledgment f respnsibility; Declaratin f regret; Offer f repair; Request fr frgiveness.
While all six play a rle, the researchers fund that tw std abve the rest: acknwledging respnsibility and ffering t repair the damage. It turns ut that the mst pwerful wrds in an aplgy are the simplest: “It was my fault.” ____17____ It tells the ther persn that yu see what happened clearly and that yu are willing t wn yur part in it. ____18____ As Prfessr Lewicki pints ut, talk is… just wrds. That’s why the secnd mst imprtant part f an aplgy is the ffer f repair. Saying “I’ll fix what I brke” transfrms regret int actin.
Other elements still matter. But interestingly, the least imprtant piece was asking fr frgiveness. Perhaps that’s because it’s nt smething yu can demand. ____19____
We can’t cntrl hw the wrld acts, but we can live ut the humbleness and respnsibility that make harmny pssible. ____20____ In a time when divisins feel unending, a gd aplgy is nt just wrds, it’s an act f repair fr the fabric f ur shared lives.
      A. But respnsibility alne is nt enugh.
      B. Aplgies matter as they bridge hurt and healing.
      C. Still, we all knw nt all aplgies are created equal.
      D. A sincere aplgy releases anger and brings back cnnectin.
      E. Taking respnsibility breaks dwn defensiveness and excuses.
      F. It’s a gift the ther persn chses t give when they’re ready.
      G. With these six steps, ur cnflicts will find a new path frward.
