Eighteen miles int the walk, bth f my legs screamed. I was a few mnths int training fr a 30-mile walking challenge t celebrate the final year f my Ph. Lking fr a way t take my mind ff the stresses f finishing my Ph. D. and the jb search, I decided t rganize a 30-mile walking challenge. I’d ease the burden f lng hurs wrking n thesis chapters and jb applicatins by being ut in the cuntryside, amng the members f the walking grup I had jined a year ag. Sn, thugh, I was finding I had less time t train. I pushed myself harder than I shuld have, setting the stage fr my leg injury.
My prfessinal prspects weren’t lking any better. And my injury nly wrsened my md. Fr mnths I stuck dggedly t my previusly laid plans — but maybe it was time t try a new path.
I previusly cnsidered gvernment jbs but had been discuraged by the cmplicated applicatin prcess, very different frm that at private cmpanies. But the emplyment plicies seemed friendly tward thse undertaking career transitins, and the wrk seemed in line with my career gals. I decided t give it a try, learning new vcabulary s t explain hw my academic experience qualified me fr the jbs — and was excited t get interviews, and eventually ffers, fr tw different psitins. The weight I had felt fr mnths finally lifted.
At the same time, I was still struggling with my walk plans. With the stress f my jb search behind me, I learned I culd find satisfactin by revising my gal: a shrtened walk f 14 miles, a distance I culd manage cmfrtably.
One mnth later, I successfully defended my thesis and started my new jb.

Climate change leads t rising temperatures, increased sea levels, and drught (干旱). Hwever, its effects dn’t end there — it can als change the taste f fd.
In suthwest Spain, black Iberian pigs lk fr fd under centuries-ld ak trees, a prcess key fr the unique taste f the Jamn Iberic, a special cured ham (腌制火腿) made frm these pigs. Hwever, accrding t Natinal Gegraphic, mre heat waves and a five-year drught have reduced the number f the trees’ acrns (橡子) as well as the grass arund them. Withut these natural fd surces, the pigs require extra feed, which changes the ham’s unique taste.
Drught als affects the taste f fruits. Watermelns, fr example, shw significant flavr changes during drught cnditins. Accrding t researchers at the Agrifd Research and Technlgy Center f Aragn in Spain, cmpunds (化合物) such as sugars build up during drught, changing the taste f fd, either fr better r fr wrse.
Beynd drught, rising temperatures and sea levels als influence fd flavrs. Warm days and cl nights help fruits develp the best flavr by increasing their sugar cntent and acidity (酸度). Hwever, glbal warming is changing this. Fr example, Japanese apples are becming less acidic, sfter, and drier because they blm early and grw in higher temperatures. Oysters, which d best in a mix f salt and freshwater, are lsing their unique taste because rising sea levels are making their envirnment t salty.
While the fd we eat is affected by climate change, ur fd chices als impact the climate. Meat and milk prducts, especially frm cws, cntribute significantly t greenhuse gas emissins. Raising animals fr fd makes up abut 14.5 percent f the wrld’s ttal greenhuse gas emissins, similar t the emissins frm all vehicles cmbined. Prducing animal prtein (蛋白质) uses mre land, energy and water than plant prtein.
While this seems like a bad cycle, it can be brken. Fr example, The Gd Fd Institute, a US-based think tank, believes peple will chse alternative prteins if they are as tasty and affrdable as meat. Meanwhile, mre farmers are practicing “greener” farming, and when peple buy lcal, in-seasn prduce, the impact n the envirnment is reduced.
8. What has caused the change in the flavr f Jamn Iberic?
A. The change in pig feeding methds due t new technlgy.
B. The intrductin f new curing techniques.
C. The lack f natural feed fr the pigs.
D. The use f ther meat surces.
9. What des paragraph 5 mainly talk abut?
A. The chices we make abut fd influence the envirnment.
B. The cmparisn between plant and animal prteins.
C. The rising carbn ftprint f fd prductin.
D. The effects f farming n glbal warming.
10. What actin can cnsumers take t fight climate change?
A. Eating less prcessed fd.B. Buying lcal and in-seasn fd.
C. Supprting traditinal farming practices.D. Chsing animal prtein ver plant prtein.
11. What’s the best title fr this passage?
A. Shifts in Sea LevelsB. Changes n Yur Plate
C. Drughts and AgricultureD. Greenhuse Gas Emissins

Tys n children’s hliday wish lists may cntain mre surprises than usual this year as children pen presents that can talk with their wners. Tymakers have declared 2025 the year f artificial intelligence (AI) and are prducing rbts and teddies that can teach, play and tell stries.

Hwever, it is bviusly risky t let children use this develping technlgy as they like. AI tutrs may give wrng answers. Tys can g ff the rails (轨道). Children can easily misuse AI, t cheat at hmewrk. Besides, ne-sided relatinships with chatbts als present a risk. AI cmpanins that never criticize, nr share feelings f their wn, are a pr preparatin fr dealing with imperfect humans. A third f American teenagers say they find chatting with an AI cmpanin at least as satisfying as talking t a friend, and easier than talking t their parents. Yes-bts threaten t create children nt used t taking turns, wh grw up int clleagues unable t cmprmise (妥协)r partner with thers. This is the lng-term challenge.
Sme basic cunter-measures are urgent. Parents shuld think twice befre entrusting their child t a machine. Chatbts shuld have clear age rules that are prperly carried ut; gvernments shuld nt give AI firms mre freedm. They shuld reduble effrts t teach things that a rbt can’t: t debate, t disagree and t get alng with thers — perhaps even t appreciate life.
12. What surprise may be fund in 2025?
A. An interactive ty.B. A funny vide game.
C. A well-cmpsed sng.D. A stry-writing machine.
13. What des the underlined wrd “dim” prbably mean in paragraph 3?
A. Lacking in flexibility.B. Slw in learning.
C. Depressed in md.D. Interested in cartns.
14. What is the lng-term challenge that AI brings accrding t the text?
A. AI tutrs give wrng answers.B. Children cheat with AI’s help.
C. Tys g ff the rails easily.D. Children lse interpersnal skills.
15. What is the authr’s attitude tward AI chatbts?
A. Oppsed.B. Supprtive.C. Objective.D. Indifferent.
