Gerge C. Hale served as the Chief f the Kansas City Fire Department fr 31 years. At the end f the 19th century, he enhanced firefighting with his 60 patented inventins, including the Hale Water Twer and the telephne fire alarm, and helped bring America’s fire departments int the mdern era.
In Kansas’ early histry, fires were cmmn with mst hmes built f wd and heated with cal. Every secnd mattered fr the crews tasked with putting them ut. Hale was a mechanical genius, slving the prblems firefighters faced in his era.
Teams f trained hrses were used t transprt equipment t and frm fires frm 1860 t 1927. Harnessing (上挽具) the hrses was a time-cnsuming business until Hale invented the swinging hrse harness. The harness was suspended (悬挂) frm the ceiling f the fire statin. When the alarm sunded, the hrses mved int place and the harness brke pen and drpped int psitin, making them spring int actin with lightning speed.
Hale trained his team t make certain every mment cunted. Demnstratins f their recrd-speed harnessing were s successful that majr cities demanded t see the Kansas City firefighters in actin. The team was even invited t represent the United States as the “American Fire Team” at the Internatinal Fire Cngress in Lndn in 1893 fr an audience with Queen Victria.
Passinate abut seeking new appraches t upgrading firefighting, Hale made numerus inventins, imprving firefighters’ wrk efficiency. He even hired a circus gymnast t teach firefighters physical fitness. His nvel ideas dramatically changed the whle fire service.
Althugh Hale was fired wing t his plitical cnflict with the authrity in 1902, he didn’t quit his cmmitment t firefighting. Each Olympic Games features athletes pushing the bundaries f human limits, but the Paris Olympics are particularly ntable in this regard. At the Paris Olympics, recrds were brken thrugh grup imprvement rather than individual breakthrughs. In the men’s 10,000 meters, 13 athletes brke the recrd, with Jshua Cheptegei winning in 26:43.14. The wmen’s 400 meters final saw all nine athletes finish under 50 secnds.
The amazing purple track may accunt fr that. The purple runway f the Paris Olympics is inspired by lavender fields in Prvence, suthern France. This clr nt nly symblizes the rmance and elegance f France, but als shws the natural scenery and cultural heritage f France.
The design cncept and purpse f the purple runway is t bring a sense f freshness and a unique viewing experience thrugh nn-traditinal clr selectin. Alain Blndel, the head f athletics fr the Paris Olympics, nted that this design nt nly creates a strng visual cntrast between the track and the spectatrs during televisin bradcasts, highlighting the athletes, but als helps athletes perfrm better.
Purple is cnsidered a cl clr, which can create a sense f calm and stability. Unlike blue, anther cl clr, purple als includes elements f red, a warm clr that adds a sense f energy and expansin. This cmbinatin f red’s warmth and blue’s clness gives purple a balanced effect — it calms withut being t sft, helping t maintain a steady yet mtivated emtinal state.
This runway is nt nly eye-catching fr its unique clr, but als hides the secrets f high technlgy. The runway is made f high-tech materials develped by Mnd, which have excellent durability and elasticity, and can prvide the best cmpetitive cnditin. Kipchge, the marathn wrld recrd hlder, praised the impact and resilience f the runway. Track and field legend Carl Lewis als cnducted a cmprehensive test f the runway. He believed that the runway can maintain stable perfrmance in all climate cnditins and that athletes all ver the wrld wuld lve this track full f creativity and technlgy.
8. Hw des the authr prve his pint in the first paragraph?
A. By making cmparisns.B. By analyzing causes.
C. By presenting pinins.D. By giving examples.
9. What cntributes t the excellent perfrmance f the Paris Olympians?
A. The uncnventinal clr f the runway.B. The beautiful scenery f France.
C. The rmantic atmsphere in Paris. D. The mtivatin f Olympic spirit.
10. What advantage des purple have accrding t the passage?
A. Creating a sense f calm and stability like blue.
B. Helping athletes t develp a balanced persnality.
C. Having a strnger sense f energy in cmparisn with red.
D. Cntributing t keeping a stable yet encuraged state.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A. The technlgical virtue f the purple track.B. The utstanding perfrmance f great athletes.
C. The prmising future f the purple runway.D. The verall quality tests n the new runway.

A team f AI researchers at Micrsft, wrking with clleagues frm the Pacific Nrthwest Natinal Labratry(PNNL), has used AI t develp a battery that uses less lithium (锂).
Lithium batteries have becme the industry standard fr electrnic devices and electric vehicles and are expected t play a majr rle in the change t green pwer. But lithium is expensive, which has led multiple teams acrss the glbe t lk fr alternatives. In this new effrt, the research team lked fr ways t reduce the amunt f lithium used in batteries.
This wuld nrmally take a lng time because f the detailed apprach required. T reduce the wrklad and the time needed t prcess millins f alternatives, the researchers turned t AI. Nting that AI applicatins are gd at using massive amunts f data t learn hw t d things, the researchers designed ne that culd study millins f materials that might be added t a lithium battery t replace sme amunt f the lithium and test the results fr factrs such as stability and hw a battery using a given material wuld behave.
Using this apprach, the research team reduced the list f pssible alternatives t just a few hundred pssibilities. They then turned t materials scientists at PNNL fr advice n hw t reduce the pssibilities even further. The scientists suggested adding mre specific screening criteria and mre testing runds. After adpting that advice, the team arrived at a prmising alternative and an apprach that invlved replacing apprximately half f the lithium atms in a battery with sdium (钠) atms.
After using the new apprach t build a wrking battery, the researchers fund it had lwer cnductivity (导电性) than needed — but they als believe that there is rm fr imprvement. They plan t cntinue wrking n the apprach and the prcess they used t find their slutin, which they suggest culd eventually slve ther types f material prcessing prblems.
12. Why did the research team want t develp a battery that uses less lithium?
A. T reduce carbn emissins. B. T meet the industry standard.
C. T decrease the cst f a battery. D. T generate electricity efficiently.
13. What d the underlined wrds “this apprach” in paragraph 4 refer t?
A. Using AI t find pssible materials. B. Adding ther materials t a battery.
C. Develping an applicatin t cllect data.D. Replacing lithium in a battery with sdium.
14. Hw did the research team finally find a prmising alternative?
A. By seeking funding frm PNNL. B. By asking experts fr advice.
C. By turning t Micrsft fr help. D. By cperating with ther scientists.
15. What is the existing challenge with the new apprach?
A. It is less effective than expected.B. It csts t much time and mney.
C. It ccupies t much rm. D. It prcesses at a lwer speed.
