It’s January 2022, and my seven-year-ld sn is standing n his skatebard at the tp f a cncrete slpe (斜坡). He lks scared, and I’m urging him t try, almst begging. The reasn fr my enthusiasm? Just a few weeks earlier, I std frzen in that same spt befre taking my wn leap. I knw hw amazed he’ll feel afterward, s we take baby steps. Finally, he des it all n his wn. As he makes it, his smile lights up the entire skatepark.
There’s smething magical abut skatebarding: In a flash, fright turns int delight. My husband and I began skating even when we are in ur 40s, s that we culd learn alngside ur sn. As a “later skater”, I’ve cme t realize that everything seems impssible until yu try it. At the time, I had n idea hw much I wuld gain frm the nt-s-simple art f standing sideways.
First, skatebarding teaches determinatin because prgress cmes frm effrts. N matter hw skilled the crwd r hw gravity-defying (反重力的) the mves, yu’ll see just as many tricks ging wrng as right. Irish writer Samuel Beckett culd have been speaking fr skaters when he wrte: “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
There are als plenty f sensible benefits, such as mindfulness. When yu’re skatebarding, it’s almst impssible t think f anything else. What magic it is t step n a piece f wd with fur little wheels and be transprted t a place where yur head is emptied and the utside wrld can’t tuch yu.
The best part, thugh? The cmmunity. My husband, sn and I are part f an infrmal grup f parents and children wh skate tgether. We lve it, frm the clear ringing sund beneath ur wheels t the way the sun makes the graffiti-cvered buildings pp with clr. We make friends and learn frm ne anther. We face ur fears side by side, cheer fr the highs, and share the falls.

      C. It encurages skaters t build cnnectins.
      D. It speeds skaters t escape frm chasers.

Sick yung ants release a smell t tell wrker ants t destry them t prtect the clny frm infectin, scientists said Tuesday, adding that queens d nt seem t cmmit this act f self-sacrifice.
Many animals cnceal illness fr scial reasns. Ant clnies, hwever, act as ne “super-rganism” which wrks t ensure the survival f all, similar t hw infected cells in ur bdies send ut a “find-me and eat-me” signal, accrding t an Austria-led team f scientists.
When adult wrker ants get an illness, they leave the nest t die alne. Yung ants, knwn as pupae, in cntrast are still trapped inside a ccn, making scial distancing impssible. Scientists had already figured ut that when these pupae are terminally ill, there is a chemical change that prduces a particular smell. Adult wrker ants then gather arund, remve the ccn, “bite hles in the pupae and insert pisn,” Dawsn said.
Fr the research, the scientists wanted t figure ut whether the pupae “were actively saying: ‘hey, cme and kill me,’” Dawsn said. First, the scientists extracted the smell frm the sick pupae f a black garden ant. When they applied the smell t a healthy brd in the lab, the wrkers still destryed them. Then, the team cnducted an experiment shwing that the sick pupae nly prduce the smell when wrker ants are nearby, prving it is a deliberate signal fr destructin. “While it is a sacrifice — a truly altruistic act — it’s als in their wn interest, because it means that their genes are ging t survive and be passed n t the next generatin,” Dawsn said.
Hwever, there is ne member f the nest that des nt sacrifice itself. When queen pupae are infected inside their ccns, they d nt send ut the smelly warning signal, the team fund. “Are they cheating the system?” Dawsn said the team asked themselves. Hwever, they fund that the “queen pupae have much better immune systems than the wrker pupae, and s they were able t fight ff the infectin — and that’s why we think that they weren’t signalling”, she said. Dawsn hpes future research will investigate whether queen pupae sacrifice themselves when it becmes clear they will nt beat their infectin.
      8. Why des the authr mentin the “find-me and eat-me” signal?
      A. T explain the self-sacrifice signal system f the ants.
      B. T cntrast disease respnses in insects and humans.
      C. T shw hw ants carry ut scial distancing in the nest.
      D. T describe the methd scientists used in their experiment.
      9. What des the wrd “altruistic” in Paragraph 4 mst nearly mean?
      A. Driven by self-preservatin instincts.
      B. Carried ut fr the benefit f thers.
      C. Cntrlled by genetic prgramming.
      D. Triggered by external chemical signals.
      10. Why dn’t queen pupae emit the warning signal?
      A. They pssess superir immune defenses against infectin.
      B. They use a bilgical trick t avid detectin.
      C. They pstpne signaling until the infectin prgresses.
      D. They rely n specialized prtective mechanisms.
      11. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Sick yung ants invite destructin t save clny.
      B. Sick yung ants send signals asking fr treatment.
      C. Queen ants refuse t signal and avid sacrifice.
      D. Different ant species shw varius sacrifice behavirs.

The effects f high altitude (海拔) n the human bdy culd prtect against besity (肥胖), accrding t a study f mre than 4 millin children acrss Clmbia. The findings supprt the thery that lw xygen levels drive increased energy cnsumptin, thugh prir evidence cmes mainly frm adults.
T understand the ptential impact n children, Lizcan Lsada at the University f La Sabana analysed data n 4.16 millin children aged up t 5 years ld frm 1123 cities. The children were separated int fur grups relating t the height abve sea level at which they lived: up t 1000 metres, 1001 t 2000 metres, 2001 t 3000 metres r abve 3000 metres.
In the tw lwer-altitude regins, arund 80 ut f every 10,000 children had besity. Hwever, at altitudes f 2001 t 3000 metres, the prevalence (发生率) f besity fell t 40 in 10,000. At altitudes abve 3000 metres, the prevalence was higher again: 86 ut f 10,000. Hwever, the team says this may be a statistical accident, as this data set included fewer cities and children than the ther three altitude ranges.
“That’s a fair cmment,” says David Stensel at Lughbrugh University. But he als emphasises the study is bservatinal, s it desn’t prve high altitude prevents besity. “They’ve tried t make sure they’ve adjusted fr the ther ptential influencing factrs,” he says. These include measures f pverty and lw incme. But “yu can’t accunt fr everything”, says Stensel. Assuming high altitude really des make besity less likely, Stensel says it isn’t clear hw this knwledge culd be f practical use in reducing the cnditin.
Hwever, Lsada argues the findings supprt the creatin f gegraphically tailred public health strategies. He suggests further studies are needed t better understand the bilgical pathways linking altitude t childhd besity, which culd lead t mre precise health advice fr different regins.
12 What was the analysis in Lsada’s study mainly based n?
      A. Gruped data.B. Sample size.
      C. Children’s age.D. City type.
      13. What is the team’s view n the unexpected result f the study?
      A. It’s a definite trend.
      B. It’s a chance ccurrence.
      C. It’s a misleading signal.
      D. It’s a measurement errr.
      14. What des the authr try t illustrate by mentining Stensel in paragraph 4?
      A. The imprtance f health knwledge.
      B. The necessity f actinable strategies.
      C. The limitatin f the research methd.
D The cmplexity f the influencing factrs.

He shwed them hw t read little animal ftprints, hw t listen fr streams, and hw t find safe berries when they felt hungry. When the weather turned cludy r rainy, the whle family wuld sit by the fireplace in the cabin, taking turns telling stries. The flames crackled cheerfully while shadws danced against the walls, creating a warm wrld f their wn.
One afternn, hwever, their parents had t g ut fr a shrt errand. Befre leaving, they reminded the siblings firmly nt t g utside. David and Jane prmised, but the prmise didn’t last lng. The gentle sund f the stream utside the cabin windws was simply t tempting. David lked at his sister and whispered, “Why dn’t we g fr a little adventure? We’ll take the flashlights — if it gets dark, we’ll still be kay.”
Jane hesitated nly fr a mment befre her curisity wn. The tw slipped ut and headed int the wds. The frest welcmed them with dappled sunlight spilling acrss the grund. Dry leaves crackled crisply under their feet, and a plump, unfamiliar bird hpped frm branch t branch, chirping as if greeting them. When they gt hungry, the siblings picked the same berries their father had shwn them days earlier.

The best part thugh? The cmmunity. My husband, sn and I are part f an infrmal grup f parents and children wh skate tgether. We lve it, frm the clear ringing sund beneath ur wheels t the way the sun makes the graffiti-cvered buildings pp with clr. We make friends and learn frm ne anther.
11 What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Sick yung ants invite destructin t save clny.
      B. Sick yung ants send signals asking fr treatment.
      C. Queen ants refuse t signal and avid sacrifice.
      D. Different ant species shw varius sacrifice behavirs.
      【答案】8. A 9. B 10. A 11. A
根据第二段“Many animals cnceal illness fr scial reasns. Ant clnies, hwever, act as ne “super-rganism” which wrks t ensure the survival f all, similar t hw infected cells in ur bdies send ut a “find-me and eat-me” signal, accrding t an Austria-led team f scientists(许多动物出于社会原因隐藏疾病。然而,一个由奥地利领导的科学家团队称,蚂蚁群落就像一个“超级生物体”,致力于确保所有蚂蚁的生存,这与我们体内受感染的细胞发出“找到我并吃掉我”的信号类似)”可知,蚂蚁群落就像一个“超级生物体”,致力于确保所有蚂蚁的生存,可推理出作者提到“找到我并吃掉我”的信号是为了解释蚂蚁的自我牺牲信号系统。故选A。
      【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段““While it is a sacrifice—a trulyaltruistic act—it’s als in their wn interest, because it means that their genes are ging t survive and be passed n t the next generatin,” Dawsn said(道森说:“虽然这是一种牺牲——一种真正的altruistic行为——但这也符合它们自身的利益,因为这意味着它们的基因将存活下来并传给下一代。”)”
根据最后一段“Hwever, they fund that the “queen pupae have much better immune systems than the wrker pupae, and s they were able t fight ff the infectin—and that’s why we think that they weren’t signalling”, she said(然而,他们发现“蚁后蛹的免疫系统比工蚁蛹好得多,所以它们能够抵御感染——这就是我们认为它们不发出信号的原因”,她说)”可知,蚁后蛹不发出警告信号是因为它们拥有更强的免疫防御能力来对抗感染。故选A。
      【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据第一段“Sick yung ants release a smell t tell wrker ants t destry them t prtect the clny frm infectin, scientists said Tuesday, adding that queens d nt seem t cmmit this act f self-sacrifice.(科学家周二表示,生病的年轻蚂蚁会释放一种气味,告诉工蚁摧毁它们以保护蚁群免受感染,并补充说蚁后似乎不会做出这种自我牺牲的行为)”可知,文章主要围绕生病的年轻蚂蚁通过释放气味邀请被摧毁以拯救蚁群展开,所以A选项“Sick yung ants invite destructin t save clny(生病的年轻蚂蚁邀请被摧毁以拯救蚁群)”最能概括文章主旨。故选A。

      12. What was the analysis in Lsada’s study mainly based n?
      A. Gruped data.B. Sample size.
      C. Children’s age.D. City type.
      13. What is the team’s view n the unexpected result f the study?

      D. The cmplexity f the influencing factrs.
      15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
      A. Altitude’s Rle in Childhd Weight
      B. Less Oxygen, Healthier Children?
