The nature f cmpassin fatigue (同情疲劳) means that many wrking in traditinal care-giving rles are likely t experience its symptms. This includes first respnders, scial wrkers, jurnalists, medical prfessinals and lawyers specializing in family law r criminal law.
Kelli Cllins, a licensed family therapist, remarks “Think abut muscle fatigue—if yu wrk ut t hard, yur muscles might simply give ut. In the same way, cmpassin fatigue means yur ability t ffer cmpassin t thers is dramatically affected.”
Cllins herself experienced cmpassin fatigue as a yung therapist wrking in a cmmunity mental health setting, where she “had the strng desire t help” but quickly realized sme things were ut f her “range f influence”. She felt herself becming easily annyed with lved nes, sleeping very little, and fantasizing abut changing careers. It was an verwhelming time, during which she felt she was failing her clients.
“I thught that by giving endless cmpassin t my clients, I was ‘leaving it all n the field’. In fact, bearing the respnsibility fr my clients’ pain withut cnsideratin fr my wn needs and limits meant that I wasn’t a particularly effective therapist,” she says.
Lynne Hughes, wh funded Cmfrt Zne in 1999 and nw serves as CEO, lst bth her parents as a child, experiencing first-hand the lack f resurces and supprt fr grieving children. Hughes expresses similar feelings abut the challenge f cmpassin fatigue, stressing the imprtance f lking inward.
“Suffering frm cmpassin fatigue des nt mean yu’re bad at helping r caring; it nly means the scale between caring fr thers and caring fr yurself is n lnger balanced,” she says. “When yu’re in a rle where yu’re nurturing and caring fr thers—it’s crucial t extend that nurture and care t yurself s that ‘yur well’ des nt run dry.”
But bth Hughes and Cllins emphasize that it’s nt nly traditinal caregivers wh experience cmpassin fatigue. “It is applicable t anyne in a caring rle,” says Hughes, while Cllins believes it is a uniquely human cnditin, ccupatinal r nt.

In a grassland in Cambridge, Ont., a lw hum fills the air. It’s a warm spring day and eastern bumblebee (大黄蜂) queens are busy with pllinatin (授粉). But take a clser lk and yu’ll ntice sme f them are wearing…backpacks?
These backpacks are actually a tl used by pst-dctral fellw Amanda Liczner f the University f Guelph t learn mre abut the bees’ mvement, behaviur and habitat chices. Instead f GPS cllars nrmally used fr tracking larger species, Liczner’s team attached tiny trackers t the queens’ backs. Once attached, these tiny trackers transmit radi signals t a cllectin f 44 radi twers which prcess the signals t recrd bees’ precise whereabuts. Liczner can then dwnlad the data frm the twers t figure ut hw the bees are spending their time.
While we d knw bumblebees need flwers, as Liczner will tell yu, there’s a lt we still dn't knw abut bumblebees, especially abut hw pesticides (杀虫剂) affect bees’ mvement. This lack f infrmatin, says Liczner, makes it tricky t prvide specific cnservatin recmmendatins.
S far, the team has made sme interesting discveries. In experiments fcused n hw different pesticides affect bee mvement, the scientists learned that while using newer classes f pesticides may nt kill bumblebees, “we have fund that they’re flying in significantly dd ways,” says Liczner. Fr example, pesticide-treated late-seasn queens, which wuld usually be resting and building up energy reserves fr the winter, were mving “all ver the place”, ptentially burning up the fat stres they need t survive the winter.
What’s mre, 30% f flights are at night. That “blws everyne’s mind,” says Liczner. “And it’s at all times f night!” This is imprtant and ptentially alarming infrmatin, she says, because sme regulatins allw farmers t use pesticides between dusk and dawn, when bees were previusly thught t be inactive.
This late summer, Liczner and her team were able t fllw the backpacked queens t the spts where they dug int the grund t spend the winter. When the queens emerge, unflding their wings in the spring sunshine, Liczner hpes t be there t learn mre frm this understudied species.
12. What is the functin f “backpacks” n bumblebee queens?
A. T film bees’ habitats.B. T reveal bees’ lcatins.
C. T attach GPS cllars t bees.D. T send signals t the twers.
13. Hw d pesticides impact bumblebees?
A. They determine bees’ flight patterns.
B. They decrease bees’ night activity.
C. They cnfuse bees’ perceptin f seasns.
D. They reduce bees’ energy strage fr winter.
14. Which finding surprised the researchers mst?
A. Bees need flwers t survive.
B. Radi twers recrd bees' lcatins.
C. 30% f bee flights happen at night.
D. Trackers can be attached t small bees.
15. What might be Liczner’s view n current pesticide regulatins?
A. They shuld priritize tracking bees’ winter shelters.
B. They effectively prtect bees by restricting daytime spraying.
C. They might be inadequate given bees’ unexpected night activity.
D. They are unnecessary since new pesticides dn’t kill bees immediately.

And just like that, I fund myself in anther cultural trap, Mrs. Wilsn’s birthday dinner. At the table, I answered plitely but kept mstly t myself. That night, restless and wide awake, I wndered if I needed t laugh luder, speak faster; r hide parts f myself just t feel I belnged. Questins flded my mind, nne with answers.
