Like many peple in New Zealand, Emma Lewis grew up knwing little abut her cuntry’s natinal game — rugby, ther than watching sme neighburs pass the ball arund n a muddy field.
It was nly when her tw kids started playing rugby as part f their training fr netball that she really tk ntice. Her sn, Ben, went n t d very well in rugby and nw plays fr the Wellingtn Waves in a natinal yuth rugby league.
Bth came up thrugh the Harbur Junir Rugby Club (HJRC), in the Wellingtn area, which has been arund since 1905. When the number f players in the kids’ teams began falling in 2019, Ms. Lewis, wh runs a small cafe in Wellingtn, vlunteered t help. She ffered t spnsr the “Tiny Ferns” prgram, which intrduced kids aged 7 and 8 t the game.
Thanks t her spnsrship, mre than 80 kids play fr free each autumn fr eight weeks. They spend an hur every Saturday learning the game and every player is given a sft rugby ball and a green shirt. “They are taught t catch, pass, run and scre in a nn-cntact setting,” she said. “Yu get them running arund. Yu get them ff their devices. It is ur natinal game, s yu let them feel it. And sure enugh, they enjy it.”
T fund the prgram, Ms. Lewis came up with a new idea. She started lking arund her neighburhd fr ld appliances, metal and electrnic items such as brken tasters, laptps and cell phnes. She srted the material behind her cafe and sld it t a lcal recycling centre. “Peple nw bring their ld electrnics and metal t the back dr,” she said. The recycling brings in arund $15,000 a year, which cvers the cst f the rugby prgram.
Ms. Lewis said watching the kids play has given her a lt f happiness. Nt nly is far less rubbish ging t landfill, she said, but “we’ve als gt kids wh are ut n the field, nt sitting in frnt f a phne.”

When yu see smene unbx a new pair f sneakers (运动鞋), their face lights up with pure excitement. Tday, millins f peple arund the wrld share this feeling. Acrss cities and campuses, custmers line up utside ppular stres t trade shes, and celebrate their favurite styles.
Yet in the early 2010s, sneaker culture was just cming n the scene. Althugh several classic brands had already built strng reputatins, many cmpanies wndered: Wuld this grwing lve fr sneakers last? Wuld yung cnsumers still buy them after a few years? And with s many designs entering the market, hw culd brands truly stand ut frm the cmpetitin?
These were the questins that SkyStep, a Singapre-based sprts she cmpany, faced in 2016. Althugh they had successfully launched dzens f stres, they fund themselves in a strategic fg, which led them t research int the deep, unexplred psychlgy f sneakers.
Like Serenitea, SkyStep partnered with a research agency called INSIGHT Lab, which specializes in drilling dwn t the deep cnsumer “why”. Using a variety f psychlgical techniques, the team invited participants t recall their earliest memries f shes — bth sprts shes and everyday ftwear.
They uncvered the three psychlgical mechanisms f the sneaker experience. First, participants assciated shes with freedm: childhd memries f running utdrs, playing games, and explring the wrld. Secnd, they cnnected sneakers with identity. Peple explained that chsing a certain style allwed them t express wh they were — r wh they hped t becme. Lastly, sneakers represented belnging. Many recalled jining sprts teams r walking with friends wh wre similar shes, frming a shared cmmunity.
SkyStep quickly turned these insights int actin. New stres were designed with wide, pen spaces that invited custmers t mve, jump and try different activities. The cmpany intrduced custmizable details — such as chsing clurs, laces (鞋带) and small symbls — s that buyers culd express a persnal identity. They als created cmmunity running clubs, weekend “sneaker walks”, and nline grups where fans shared phts and stries. In this way, sneakers became mre than prducts; they became tickets int a living, grwing cmmunity.
The case f SkyStep suggests that when brands pay attentin t cnsumers’ inner wrld, they can d mre than sell anther pair f shes. Fr many custmers, slipping n their favurite sneakers is nt just getting dressed — it is quietly telling the wrld wh they are and where they belng.

30. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr this passage?

A “memry breakdwn” is ften said t be the majr cgnitive (认知的) prblem f ur time. In a recent piece in The Chrnicle Review, Daniel Mercer argued that “students can’t remember even simple facts withut checking their phnes”, and many schls have quietly lwered expectatins fr memrizing dates, frmulas (公式) and vcabulary.
Yet cmplaints abut weak memry are hardly new. In the late 19th century, British educatr Henry Latham wrried that cheap printed bks wuld destry students’ pwer t remember, because they n lnger needed t keep lng passages in their heads. Over the decades, similar denunciatins have returned each time a new tl has entered classrms.
Mercer suggests that rather than a simple lss f ability, we may be seeing a shift in hw peple chse t use their memry. Many students nw treat their phnes as an “external brain”, much as earlier generatins treated the family bkshelf. At the same time, the use f digital calendars, search engines and clud strage cntinue t rise. This pints t a change nt in whether peple can remember, but in what they believe is wrth remembering. “Students can still memrize,” Mercer wrte. “They’re just deciding t memrize different things.”
This leads t a deeper questin: What kind f memry d we truly need, and why? Psychlgists ften distinguish between recall — prducing infrmatin with n help — and recgnitin, which is using clues t find what we nce knew. In classic “change blindness” experiments, peple fail t ntice that a stranger they are speaking t has been secretly replaced by anther persn, because their attentin is n the task, nt the face. It seems that relying n external cues and cntext is nt always a weakness; it may reflect a different way f managing limited mental resurces.
Culd tday’s yung peple be develping useful memry strategies that we have nt yet learned t value? What abut their skill at searching huge databases in secnds, r at linking ideas acrss vides, chats and nline dcuments? These new habits f remembering challenge us t recnsider — with the histry f past “memry breakdwn” in mind — hw we might understand and supprt human memry in mre flexible, frward-lking ways.
31 What des the underlined wrd “denunciatins” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Criticisms.B. Origins.C. Trends.D. Indicatrs.
32. What des the grwing use f digital tls suggest accrding t Mercer?

B. Peple n lnger need t train their memry as befre.
C. Schls are frcing students t rely n external devices.
D. Mdern technlgy is destrying traditinal learning tls.
33. Why des the authr mentin the “change blindness” experiments?
A. T display that peple are easily fled by visual tricks.
B. T argue that face recgnitin is mre imprtant than tasks.
C. T prve that using utside cues can be a reasnable strategy.
D. T illustrate that mst memries are frmed withut ur awareness.
34. What will prbably be discussed next?
A. Mre valuable lessns taught by histry.
