When I lk back n my 1990s childhd, it’s hard nt t feel nstalgic (怀旧的). We rde ur bikes, built dens and swam in streams. Thugh the Internet existed, my parents wuld bt me ff t use the landline. Media was tangible — tapes and CDs — and ften cnsumed as a family. I still recall the excitement f visiting the vide shp t select a film.
I’ve nticed a huge upswing f interest in “90s parenting” and, this year, the trend seems t have explded. Frmer 90s kids are in the thick f it, trying t wrk ut hw t parent their wn children. There’s a feeling that huge advances in technlgy have resulted in similar lsses. But what are the lsses? And was parenting really better back then?
“Yes,” says Justin Flm, a father f tw and cntent creatr, wh built a replica Blckbuster vide stre fr his daughters in his huse. “The whle family wuld pile int the car, head t the vide stre and walk the rws while deciding what t watch,” he says f his wn childhd. “It felt exciting, full f pssibility. Scrlling nline just isn’t the same.”
Justin’s Blckbuster rm is a way f making screen time intentinal, and that seems t be at the heart f this idea f 90s parenting. “In the 90s, the critique was that TV wuld rt (腐蚀) yur brain, but it was statinary,” he says. “It lived in yur living rm. Nw, media fllws us everywhere. It’s in ur pckets, n demand, nnstp.
With increasing fears abut the effects f screen time, and parent-led campaigns such as Smartphne Free Childhd gaining ppularity, it’s n surprise s many f us are lking back t the time just befre they explded. Sme parents and schls are even giving their children landlines. Scrlling thrugh 90s parenting-themed vides, I’m struck by ne vide: a grup f adults and kids engaging in a back garden water fight (rganised via landline), having put all their smartphnes in a bwl ut f reach.
It’s nt just abut screens. It’s abut cnnectin, family time and, actually, time mre generally. “Parenting in the 90s was basically just ‘slw’ parenting,” says Jes, a frmer primary schl teacher and a big believer in the imprtance f play. That means nt driving kids frm activity t activity s days are jam-packed. Bredm is imprtant, says Melanie Murphy, a mther f tw frm Dublin. “Lng perids f unremarkable time were a gift I didn’t knw I’d miss, and I want that fr my kids. I dn’t want t schedule every hur f their lives.”
I’ll admit that when I first encuntered the cncept f 90s parenting, I thught it was a bit verly emtinal. But if that is the case then why, writing this, d I feel s ... sad?
I can’t quite seem t shake this feeling f lss, and f wanting t return t a simpler time. Maybe I just need mre fun in my life. Time fr a water fight, I think. Wh’s in?
23. Why did Justin build the Blckbuster rm?
A. T prvide enjyable family time.B. T cmpare ld and recent mvies.
C. T share ne f his childhd hbbies.D. T prve TV desn’t damage ne’s mind.

Think f yur favrite piece f art — a painting, a sng, r a nvel — and try t remember why it made such a strng impressin n yu. Nw imagine artificial intelligence created it.
The questin might seem silly, yet this is the future tward which we are racing. Over the past few years, AI develpers have imprved the technlgy’s ability t create art acrss nearly every field. With AI s rapidly learning t prduce art frms previusly cnsidered nly the dmain (领域) f human creativity, it’s imprtant t understand hw peple view this transfrmatin.
Earlier this year we cnducted a survey n AI art. The results were striking. Mst peple held that human art has an emtinal depth which machines either can’t r shuldn’t reprduce. Yet they were pen t AI-generated art s lng as there was an artist invlved.
We first asked peple t name their favrite wrk f art. Then we asked hw they wuld feel upn learning that their favrite wrk f art was generated by AI. Respnses ranged frm shck and anger t enthusiasm: mre than 62% said they wuld like it less, 32% said their feelings wuldn’t change, and nearly 5% said they wuld like it mre.
The reactins, hwever, went deeper. When asked if there is a difference between the emtinal value f human and AI art, 81% said yes, reminding us that we seek the human experience in art. We want t knw if an artist drew frm persnal experience r imaginatin. We stp while reading a bk t learn abut its authr, and we fllw the lives f singers and actrs. Art, after all, is a way humans cmmunicate.
But if great art is frged frm human hpe, desire, disappintment and srrw, what des creativity mean in a wrld with increasingly pwerful AI? Are peple wh use AI artists? We asked this. Thirteen percent said yes, anther 13% were unsure, and 31% said n, whereas 42% selected “yes, but nly if they are prviding significant guidance t the AI; therwise, n.” These respnses cast light n why s many peple cmplain abut AI-generated “slp”. What participants are ften pinting ut is the impersnal, almst meaningless nature f AI. But many f the respndents appeared mre pen t the idea f peple using AI as a tl t help bring their artistic visin int the wrld.
As AI cnquers mre artistic dmains, what peple find acceptable may shift. But we d knw that peple still value art as a means f cmmunicatin and cnnectin. Taking the pulse f what sciety thinks abut AI art can help cnnect AI develpers nt nly with artists but with the millins f peple wh find meaning and cnnectin in art.
27. Frm the results f the survey n AI art, we can learn that _________.
A. humanity will always utperfrm AI in terms f creativity
B. human invlvement is the key factr shaping pinins n AI art
C. acceptance f AI art has gradually changed during its develpment
D. AI cnnectin has a universally negative impact n art appreciatin
28. Which f the fllwing best reflects the main pint in Paragraph 5?
A. Art at its heart is human experience cmmunicated.
B. An artist’s jb is t translate persnal experience int art.
C. Learning artists’ stries is the key t appreciating their art.
D. AI bridges cmmunicatin between experience and imaginatin.
29. The wrd “frged” underlined in Paragraph 6 mst prbably means _________.
A. releasedB. separatedC. createdD. brrwed
30. What can we infer frm this passage?
A. AI-generated art is nt accessible t everyne.
B. Peple are using AI t redefine creativity in art.
C. AI can serve as a path fr human cmmunicatin.
D. Peple want AI t help artists but nt be the artist.
