This August, 15-year-ld silky terrier Tbi — messy brwn hair, lng whiskers (胡须) — walked cnfidently with Andrea Cáceres in NYC. Calm with traffic nise r speeding ambulance sirens, he’s “a real New Yrker,” she laughed. But Tbi wasn’t always s cmfrtable in the big city; her new children’s bk Hell, Tbi! nicely captures his first careful walks in NYC, a stry deeply rted in their tight bnd.
Brn in Venezuela, Tbi inspired Cáceres while she studied civil engineering. “I started drawing, and always drew him,” she said. Self-taught, she pursued illustratin after graduatin. In 2016, in Venezuela’s crisis, she mved t the U.S. as a textile designer, leaving Tbi behind. Lneliness and stress pushed her t find a creative utlet (发泄途径).
In Jan.2018, she launched “A Dg A Day keeps Stress Away,” drawing ne dg daily — Tbi first. The illustratins struck a chrd — she began getting requests t draw peple’s pets and paint wall pictures fr lcal cafes and animal hspitals. After mre than tw years apart, she saved enugh mney t bring Tbi t NYC. His first flight canceled, he traveled thrugh Caracas, Panama, and Miami befre finally arriving, where Cáceres waited eagerly. “He started crying the mment he saw me; then I cried, and everyne arund us did t,” she recalled, her eyes sftening.
Hell, Tbi! shws his Harlem walks, meeting diverse families wh greeted him. “I felt at hme — everyne’s different, but that’s why yu fit in,” Cáceres said. Nw in Brklyn, where many speak Tbi’s native Spanish, he greets all but lves her mst. “He lves me n matter what,” she said, rubbing his belly as he wagged his tail (摇尾巴). The tw happy New Yrkers headed hme.

NASA plans t send astrnauts t Mars by the 2030s, but besides the need fr large amunts f supplies, the 21-mnth trip brings big health prblems, such as radiatin danger and muscle lss. Hibernatin (冬眠), nce thught an unrealistic slutin, is nw getting mre attentin, and a new study n bats is making this science fictin-inspired idea mre pssible.
Many mammals g int hibernatin in winter, lwering their bdy temperature and slwing dwn hw their bdies use energy t save strength. But humans can't d this safely. Our bdies can't stre enugh fat withut harm, wrk well at lw energy levels, r live thrugh big drps in bdy temperature. T find the secret f hibernatin, German animal scientist Gerald Kerth and his team studied red bld cells frm three grups: hibernating nctule bats (绒山蝠), nn-hibernating Egyptian fruit bats and humans.
They tested the cells at three temperatures— human bdy temperature, rm temperature, and the cld pint where nctule bats start t hibernate. When it gt clder, bth bat and human cells became thicker and harder. But nly bat cells grew much thicker cmpared t hw hard they were. Researchers think this feature helps bats take in and spread xygen better in cld cnditins— even Egyptian fruit bats have kept this ability frm their hibernating ancestrs, thugh they dn't hibernate nw.
Making human cells change like this culd pen the dr t safe hibernatin during space travel. Experts say the study is an imprtant step, but many questins still exist— like hw t make humans hibernate and if medicine can change ur bld cells. While space travel still has many difficulties, this bat research gives an exciting breakthrugh t make lng Mars trips healthier and mre achievable.
8. Which f the fllwing is NOT the reasn fr humans' inability t g int hibernatin safely?
A. Because ur bdies cannt wrk well at lw energy levels.
B. Because ur bdies fail t stre enugh fat withut harm.
C. Because ur bdies can't survive big drps in bdy temperature.
D. Because ur bdies can hardly use energy t save strength.
9. What can we infer abut Egyptian fruit bats frm the study?
A. They can hibernate safely like nctule bats.
B. Their red bld cells have lst the ancestral hibernatin traits.
C. Their red bld cells can still adapt t cld cnditins well.
D. They stre mre fat than ther nn- hibernating mammals.
10. What des the passage imply abut the future f Mars travel?
A. Hibernatin will slve all prblems f Mars travel.
B. The bat study has made safe hibernatin in space a reality.
C. Lng Mars trips may becme healthier with further research.
D. NASA will send astrnauts t Mars withut any difficulties by the 2030s.
11. What is the best title fr the passage?
A. NASA Is Planning t Send Astrnauts t Mars fr Hibernatin
B. New Bat Discvery May Aid Human Hibernatin fr Space Travel
C. Hibernatin Has Becme a Reality Thanks t a New Study n Bats
D. Studying Hibernatin Is f Great Imprtance t the Human Race

Air flws thrugh every building in which we spend time, including hmes, ffices, schls and stres. HVAC (暖通空调) systems keep that air mving, but they als carry t much carbn dixide (CO2).
Right nw, the biggest effrts t pull CO2 ut f the atmsphere rely n huge industrial machines that cst a frtune and need a lt f space. Instead f building big carbn-capture (碳捕捉) plants, what if we culd use the air systems already in place in every building? That’s the gal f new filters (过滤器) develped by researchers at the University f Chicag’s Pritzker Schl f Mlecular Engineering.
If every building used this kind f filter that fits int the air systems we culd remve up t 596 megatnnes f CO2 frm the atmsphere per year. That’s like taking 130 millin cars ff the rad fr a full year. But even n a small scale, the benefits are clear. In 2024, a study shwed that these filters culd help cut energy bills by as much as 21.66%.
Nrmally, HVAC systems have t bring in a lt f utside air t keep indr CO2 levels dwn. Peple have t heat r cl that air, depending n the seasn — and that csts mney. “Our filter remves CO2 inside the building, s the system desn’t have t bring in much utside air. That means less air needs t be heated r cled, which reduces the energy cnsumptin in HVAC,” explained Rnghui Wu, wh wrked n the prject.
Unlike standard filters, which ended in the trash every six mnths r s, these new filters are built fr reuse. Instead f heading t landfills, they can be cllected and refreshed. P-Chun Hsu, lead researcher, sees a future where cities manage these filters just like they handle garbage and recycling. Used filters culd be picked up, and sent t a central lcatin, where their CO2 is remved. The captured carbn culd then be turned int fuels r chemicals, adding value instead f waste.
It is a cleaner filter that captures carbn. If this technlgy catches n, buildings arund the wrld culd becme quiet climate helpers.
12. What are the new filters expected t d?
A. Cntrl air flw thrugh every building.
B. Prvide inspiratin fr building big plants.
C. Replace current heating and cling systems.
D. Turn buildings int carbn-capture machines.
13. Why are cars mentined in paragraph 3?
A. T explre special ways t cut energy bills.
B. T reveal a disadvantage f HVAC systems.
C. T shw the benefit the new filters can bring.
D. T stress the harm f CO2 frm the atmsphere.
14. What d Rnghui Wu’s wrds suggest abut the new filters?
A. They are cst-effective.B. They are in high demand nw.
C. They are still in the early stage.D. They are essential t stable temperature.
15. What is the authr’s pinin n the new technlgy?
A. It needs further imprvement.B. It is internatinally ppular.
C. Its future can be very prmising.D. Its efficiency varies with the seasn.
