Last September, I drve t a prtected wetland near my hme in Oakland, Califrnia. It was the first time that I had gne smewhere merely t watch birds. Since this unique jurney, I’ve seen 452 species, including 307 this year alne.
In sme birding circles, peple claim anyne wh lks at birds is a birder. I’ve cared abut birds and ther animals fr my entire life, and I’ve written abut them thrughut my tw decades as a science writer, but I mark the mment when I specifically chse t devte time and energy t them as the mment I became a birder.
Birding has significantly increased the time spent utdrs. It has mtivated me t explre Oakland in ways I never wuld have. While birding, I seem impervius t heat, cld, hunger and thirst. My senses fcus nly n the present, and my head becmes extremely untrubled. I als feel a much deeper cnnectin t the natural wrld, which I have lng written abut but always remained slightly distant frm.
These recent years have taught me that I’m smaller when I’m nt actively lking after myself, that I have value fr my wrld and my cmmunity beynd ceaseless prductin, and that pursuits like birding that encurage jy, wnder and bnd with places are nt sidebars t a fulfilled life but the essence.
It’s easy t perceive birding as smething yu d when yu’re nt wrking, nt being prductive, and even an escape frm reality. Instead, fr me, birding means absrbing myself in the present mment: my thughts quiet, my senses heightened, and I respnd t real, bservable events in nature with fcused awareness withut being distracted (使分心) by small, unimprtant matters. I dn’t need t knw wh the main characters are n scial media and what everyne is cmmenting n them, when I can instead spend an hur trying t lcate a rare bird.
      4. Why did the authr think the jurney t the wetland special?
      A. He prtected bird species there.B. He fell in lve with birding again.
      C. He made his true start as a birder.D. He cmpleted his writing during it.
      5. What des the underlined wrd “impervius” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Attentive.B. Subject.C. Resistant.D. Sensitive.
      6. What lessn des the authr prbably learn?
      A. Outdr pursuits are a must-have.B. Self-care can help fuel self-wrth.
      C. Happiness serves as the cre f life.D. Prductivity defines persnal value.
      7. Hw des the authr view birding accrding t the last paragraph?
      A. A cmplete engagement with reality.B. A temprary escape frm busy life.
      C. A training in fcus and bservatin.D. A substitute fr nline activities.
      C
OpenAI c-funder Andrej Karpathy imagines a wrld in which artificial intelligence bts can be made int subject matter experts that are “deeply passinate, great at teaching, infinitely patient and fluent in all f the wrld’s languages.” Thrugh this visin, the bts wuld be available t “persnally tutr all 8 billin f us n demand.”
And he’s nt alne. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Khan Academy CEO Sal Khan, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and University f Califrnia, Berkeley cmputer scientist Stuart Russell als dream f bts becming n-demand tutrs, guidance cunselrs and perhaps even replacements fr human teachers.
“AI certainly may enhance aspects f educatin, but histry shws that bts prbably wn’t be an effective substitute fr humans. As a researcher fcused n AI and ther new writing technlgies, I’ve seen many cases where high-tech ‘slutins’ fr teaching prblems fizzled.” Andrej said.
Yet technlgies fr persnal learning aren’t new. Exactly 100 years ag, inventr Sidney Pressey unveiled an “autmatic teacher” made ut f typewriter parts. In the 1950s, the psychlgist B. F. Skinner designed “teaching machines.” In bth cases, students didn’t learn much — they als fund these nnhuman appraches bring.
Mre recently, the wrld f educatin saw the rise and fall f “massive pen nline curses,” r MOOCs. Again, students lst interest and lgged ff. Other web-based effrts have appeared, including curse platfrms like Cursera and Outlier. But the same prblem persists: There’s n genuine interactivity t keep students engaged.
Nw cmes the prliferatin f AI-fueled platfrms. Sme tech leaders believe bts can custmize teaching and replace human teachers and tutrs, but they're likely t face the same prblem as these earlier attempts: Students are unlikely t be inspired and excited the way they can be by a live instructr.
The idea f an AI tutr in every pcket sunds exciting, but histry reminds us t keep a clse eye n whether students are actually learning. The prmises f persnalized learning are n guarantee fr psitive results.
      8. Why des the authr mentin the famus figures in the first tw paragraphs?
      A. T present the super pwer f AI.
      B. T stress the rle f human teachers.
      C. T emphasize the imprtance f educatin.
      D. T demnstrate the ptential prblems f AI.
      9. What des the underlined wrd “fizzled” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Failed.B. Wrked.C. Appeared.D. Imprved.
      10. Hw des the authr supprt his argument?
      A. By quting sme experts.B. By giving sme examples.
      C. By answering sme questins.D. By analyzing sme phenmena.
      11. What’s the authr’s attitude twards AI tutrs?
      A. Apprving.B. Cautius.C. Oppsed.D. Indifferent.
      D
The wrld is changing, and s is the way we build things. Traditinal cnstructin materials have been causing envirnmental and resurce prblems, but nw there are new, exciting alternatives n the rise. One f these creative materials is FabBRICK, a brick made frm waste fabrics (织物).

FabBRICK wrks with businesses t transfrm their fabric waste int new prducts, prmting waste reductin and recycling awareness. The cmpany prcesses unwanted clthes at a Parisian studi, where clthes are srted by clr and cut up int fibers. These fibers are then mixed with an eclgical glue and pressed int bricks withut the use f cnventinal dyeing, maintaining the fabric’s riginal clrs.
These bricks find varius applicatins, frm individual blcks and dividing walls t furniture parts built int chairs and tables. FabBRICK’s innvative apprach has made it pssible t wrk with varius brands, turning ver 90 kg f recycled fabric int decrative wall cverings fr stres like the Kil Shp in Paris. The ptential f FabBRICK as a structural material is still being explred. With the aim f expanding its market reach, FabBRICK is cnsidering the establishment f factries in different regins t deal with lcal fabric waste effectively. Clarisse Merlet emphasizes the glbal applicable f FabBRICK, stating, “FabBRICK can be develped wrldwide, as unfrtunately, fast fashin is everywhere, prviding a cntinual surce f fabric waste.”
      12. What made Clarisse Merlet fcus n fabric waste?
      A. Failed trails in experiments.B. Special prperties f cttn.
      C. Requirements frm her studies.D. New ways t press waste.
      13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly abut?
      A. Hw the ec-bricks are made.B. What FabBRICK aims t d.
      C. Wh FabBRICK partners with.D. Hw clrs are preserved in ec-bricks.
      14. Hw des the authr intrduce the bricks’ applicatin?
      A. By ffering rich statistics.B. By analyzing scientific principles.
      C. By listing real-life examples.D. By cmparing with ther materials.
      15. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
      A. FabBRICK has limitatins as a structural material.
      B. FabBRICK prvides a cntinual surce fr fast fashin.
      C. Fast fashin’s waste drives FabBRICK’s glbal expansin.
      D. Building new factries is FabBRICK’s mst imprtant gal.
