Fr thusands f years, peple have knwn that the best way t understand a cncept (概念) is t explain it t
smene else. “While we teach, we learn,” said Rman philspher Seneca. Nw scientists are bringing this
ancient wisdm up t date. They’re dcumenting why teaching is such a fruitful way t learn, and designing
creative ways fr yung peple t take part in “teaching”.
Researchers have fund that students wh sign up t tutr (辅 导 ) thers wrk harder t understand the
material, recall it mre accurately and apply it mre effectively. Student teachers scre higher n tests than pupils
wh’re learning nly by themselves. But hw can children, still learning themselves, teach thers? One answer:
They can tutr yunger kids. Sme studies have fund that first-brn children are mre intelligent than their

schl students. Student teachers are inspired t help Betty master certain materials. While preparing t teach, they
rganize their knwledge and imprve their wn understanding. And as they explain the infrmatin t it, they
recgnize prblems in their wn thinking. Betty’s questins and feedback push them t think in new ways and
deepen their knwledge. Mst imprtantly, teaching the agent has brught pride and satisfactin, prving that
explaining t thers is ne f the best ways t learn.
      8. Why is Rman philspher Seneca mentined?

live in cuntries where English is being learned fr getting int the glbal (全球的) marketplace increasingly prefer
American English as their standard,” said Strelluf.
“In this study, the attitudes twards English shw the basic ways we cntinue t find ur way thrugh scial
relatinships using language and ur thughts abut language.”
