In 1985, with tw yung daughters, Rxanne Swentzell, a Native American artist, returned frm her studies in Prtland t her Santa Clara Puebl cmmunity in New Mexic. Her art was years away frm prducing real incme, s she turned t the land t sustain her family
“I had this dry patch (一小块地)in the high desert,” recalls Swentzell. “I started making it int a hmesite, a farm I culd grw crps n t feed my family.” T grw crn, beans, berries and grains. Swentzell tapped int the ancient, dry-farming traditins f her peple in the suthwestern U. S., where sunshine is plentiful and rainfall is limited. These prven techniques—applicable t many ther dry regins affected by climate change- are becming ppular again amng Native cmmunities.
Initially, Swentzell’s use f ancient, high-desert farming was fcused n the health f her wn family. On her small plt f land, she dug waffle(华夫饼)gardens—grid-like(网格状的)sunken beds with earthen walls that lk like a waffle—t keep misture (水分) and avid runff when the ccasinal rains did cme. Terracing n hillsides serves a similar purpse in dry farming; cmpsting (施堆肥)helps enrich the sil.
Swentzell als identified micrclimates n her land. A large, well-placed rck wuld slw the flw f water and prvide shade and cling. The fruit trees she planted and tk care f did the same. She watched the sun as it mved arund her huse, making sure her berry bushes and seeds were planted where they culd grw well. “Every place n yur land has a micrclimate,” she tells Mngabay.
As her passin fr desert farming and seed saving grew, Swentzell’s desire t inspire her cmmunity f 7,000 became strnger as well. Swentzell sees the need fr such ancient agricultural wisdm t spread further. “This is smething the whle wrld needs at this time,” she says. “S, we’re waking up t the fact that we need t d smething. Glasses that track every blink (眨眼)might be the next big thing in health tech. A small device called BlinkWise clips(夹住)nt regular glasses and uses AI t read yur eyelid mvements —withut cameras, withut clud data, and withut running dwn yur battery. It turns smething as rdinary as a blink int a pwerful signal abut yur mental and physical state.
The average persn blinks mre than l0,000 times a day. The blink dynamics can reveal imprtant infrmatin abut fcus, eye dryness, and mental wrklad. As researcher Lama AI-Aswad ntes, blinking culd be a tl fr managing chrnic cnditins and detecting cgnitive changes early. Fr example, frequent incmplete blinking might signal dry eye disease. Blink analysis, being easy t mnitr, ffers a pwerful apprach fr early health management.
Until nw, if dctrs r scientists wanted t study yur blinking patterns, yu had t sit still in frnt f a high-speed camera in a lab. BlinkWise changes that cmpletely. It just clips yu’re yur glasses, s yu can mnitr blinks anywhere. That real-time mdel, called an eye-penness scre, is mre than just a simple “pen r shut” reprt. It draws a detailed chart f hw yur eyes are pening and clsing in every blink—smething even the fastest camera n a smartphne can't catch. Typical vide recrds at 30 r 60 frames(帧) per secnd. BlinkWise samples data thusands f times per secnd.
S hw des BlinkWise pull this ff withut draining(耗 尽)yur battery? It runs all its calculatins right n the device itself. There’s n need t send data back and frth t the clud. Everything happens lcally, n a chip smaller than a stamp. T d this, the team adapted advanced techniques and redesigned the prcessing system.
“Tday’s smart glasses can take phts r play audi, but they dn’t really understand the wearer,” said Mingmin Zha, ne f the lead researchers n the prject. “We see BlinkWise nt just as a health mnitr, but as a building blck fr glasses that are truly intelligent.
28. What can we learn abut BlinkWise frm the first paragraph?
A. It recrds vides f the user’s eyes.B. It relies n clud data fr analysis.
C. It tums blinks int health signals.D. It wrks with specialized glasses.

A. T intrduce healthy blinking habits.B. T shw the rigin f blink dynamics.
C. T stress the imprtance f blinking.D. T illustrate blink dynamics’ health implicatins.
30. Which aspect f BlinkWise des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
A. Its speed f data sampling.B. Its ability t draw detailed charts.
C. Its functin f measurement.D. Its advantages ver traditinal devices.
31. Hw can BlinkWise achieve energy efficiency?
A. It is smaller than a stamp.B. Vides are recrded at a high rate.
C. It prcesses data directly n a tiny chip.D. Calculatin data is sent efficiently t the clud.

These days, institutins and cmpanies lve t annunce what they're ding t tackle the climate crisis. But in reality, the claims are nt always accmpanied by real, effective actin —a shady practice knwn as greenwashing. But at the same time, ther cmpanies are nt cmmunicating their sustainability actins. This phenmenn is knwn as “greenhushing” and it culd be just as dangerus as greenwashing. When rganizatins tne dwn their effrts, the brader sustainability cnversatin can be weakened—and the pprtunity fr businesses t be drivers f scial change culd be lst. But why wuld cmpanies deliberately hide things that they are ding well?
Our research has investigated hw and why rganizatins take part in greenhushing. We fcused particularly n hw this ccurs in service rganizatins. First, we examined the cmmunicatin strategies f 300 UK htels engaged in envirnmentally friendly practices acrss three channels: htel websites, prfiles (简介) n travel site Bking.cm, and scial media platfrms. We fund that 62%f UK htel websites d nt include sustainability infrmatin, with nly 2% f scial media psts referring t it. Althugh bking platfrms signal the sustainability f htels that have third-party certificatins, htel websites ften dn’t prvide much explanatin in this regard.
Next, we uncvered three main reasns fr the tendency twards nt cmmunicating—r even hiding—sustainability actins. First, managers spke f reputatinal risks, highlighting their fear f being accused f greenwashing. Secnd, managers said they lacked cnfidence abut the effectiveness f their sustainability practices. Finally, many service managers highlighted that instead f cmmunicating gd practice, they relied n sustainability certificatins prvided by third-party institutins t d the talking fr them. But cnsumers dn’t always understand all these certificatins.
T build trust, it wuld be better fr rganizatins t prvide clear and cmprehensive infrmatin abut their specific sustainability actins. The sustainability dialgue needs t be prmted s that businesses have the pprtunity t act as genuine drivers f scial change.
32. What des the authr think f greenhushing in paragraph 1?
A. It is a new frm f greenwashing.B. It slws dwn sustainability prgress.
C. It urges rganizatins t make effrts.D. It is mre harmful than greenwashing.
33. What d the statistics presented in paragraph 2 indicate?
A. A rise in the quality f envirnmental psts.
B. A gap between green actins and cmmunicatin.
C. A drp in the cmmunicatin effectiveness f htels.
D. A cntrast between htel websites and ther channels.
34. What may cause cmpanies t avid cmmunicating their sustainability effrts?
A. Fear f unfair criticism.B. Cnsumers’ lw demands.
C. Lack f third-party certificatins.D. Managers' dependence n laws.
35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Greenhushing: Businesses Understating Sustainable Practices
B. Greenhushing: Businesses Discuraging Envirnmental Effrts
C. Greenwashing: Businesses Prmting Sustainable Develpment
D. Greenwashing: Businesses Shwing Envirnmental Cmmitments
