I was visiting my parents in 2003 when my mm came ut f their rm with a puzzled lk n her face. She’d been listening t the radi and heard an interview with a best-selling authr f yung adult fantasy nvels (奇幻小说). The wman’s name was Tamra Pierce, the same as a yung student my mm had taught nearly fur decades befre.
The Internet shuld be able t tell us. I fund the authr’s website quickly. She was a ppular writer f bks. I clicked n the bigraphy link t scan fr references t Burlingame Junir High, where my mm had wrked, and my heart began t race when I sptted it at the bttm f the first sectin. Here was cnfirmatin (确认) that my mther had taught a nw-famus writer!
But my eyes came t a stp reading the next paragraph, in which Pierce described writing her first fictin as a sixth grader. “The next year, as I was creating my wn stries, my English teacher, Mrs. Jacbsn, intrduced me t the Lrd f the Rings trilgy by J. R. R. Tlkien,” the bigraphy (传记) read. “I gt hked n fantasy, and then n science fictin, and bth made their way int my stries.” My mther’s name was Mary Jacbsn.
Within days, my dad had checked ut all the Tamra Pierce bks at the lcal library, and in ne we fund anther surprise: a 1998 nvel, which was dedicated (题献词) t “the teacher wh shaped my life”. The teacher was Mary Jacbsn. The dedicatin cncluded, “A great teacher is abve all ther treasures.”
This stry made me see my mm differently. We knew she was a teacher, but we had n idea what kind f teacher she had been. She was just 24 when she taught Pierce. Until 2011, when she passed away, we did knw wh she was.

We’ve all experienced it: Yu have imprtant infrmatin yu need t remember, and yu’ll d anything it takes t keep it at the frefrnt f yur brain. In this situatin, rte memrizatin (死记硬背) may be yur best — r even yur nly — ptin.
Rte memrizatin is when we repeat a piece f infrmatin until we remember it. One great example f it is the alphabet (字母表). When we are little, we dn’t necessarily understand that ur language is made up f the letters A t Z. But we memrize them in a specific rder because we are taught t, and then we knw the alphabet.
There are situatins in which rte memrizatin can be helpful. “Rte memrizatin can be a useful learning tl in sme situatins, but its effectiveness depends n the type f infrmatin being learned and hw it is applied,” says Dr. Aldrich Chan, neurpsychlgist. He tells us that rte memrizatin helps us quickly recall basic facts and infrmatin such as vcabulary wrds r math frmulas (公式). This can be particularly helpful in situatins where immediate access t infrmatin is required, like during exams.
The act f memrizing thrugh repetitin als has its dwnsides. Chan ntes that “rte memrizatin ften des nt prmte a deep understanding f the material. Learners may be able t memrize facts r infrmatin withut truly understanding their meaning r significance.” On the ther hand, he explains that “meaningful learning fcuses n understanding the basic cncepts and principles, encuraging critical thinking, and prmting the integratin (整合) f knwledge int brader cntexts. Meaningful learning prmtes lng-term memry and the ability t apply knwledge flexibly.”
Hwever, bth rte memrizatin and meaningful learning have their place. The mst imprtant t keep in mind is that they are different, and rte memrizatin cannt stand in as an alternative t actual learning. Memrizing smething desn’t mean yu understand it, and it desn’t mean yu can d anything with it.
28. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic in paragraph 1?
A. By giving an example.B. By prviding a definitin.
C. By creating a scene.D. By making a cmparisn.
29. Why des the authr mentin the alphabet in paragraph 2?
A. T shw hw rte memrizatin wrks.B. T stress why learning in rder is imprtant.
C. T instruct us hw t learn the alphabet.D. T intrduce the disadvantages f repetitin.
30. What can we learn abut rte memrizatin frm Dr. Aldrich Chan?
A. It fcuses n the cncepts and principles.B. It helps prmte a meaningful understanding.
C. It serves as useful tl fr test preparatin.D. It keeps knwledge in peple’s brain fr lng.
31. What is the authr’s attitude twards rte memrizatin?
A. Negative.B. Objective.C. Uninterested.D. Supprtive.

In 1921, Karel Čapek’s play : Rssum’s Universal Rbts had its first public perfrmance in Prague, and was translated int English the fllwing year. He needed a name fr the factry-prduced humanid wrkers f the stry, and was thinking f cining smething based n the wrd “labr”. But his brther Jsef suggested an ld Czech wrd fr “frced labr”, rbta. And the wrd “rbt” was brn.
If the Čapeks had knwn English, they might have chsen ne f the wrds with relevant senses that were already in the language. “Autmatn (自动化)” had been available since the 17th century and “andrid” since the 18th. But the clear sund f “rbt” seemed t spark the public imaginatin, because within five years it was being used nt nly fr intelligent artificial beings but fr any machine capable f carrying ut a cmplex set f mvements.
In science fictins, the wrd tk n new life, with writers such as Isaac Asimv writing well-regarded nvels in which rbts played a central rle. It was these writers wh first shrtened “rbt” t “bt”, but nne f them culd have expected the explsin f usages which arrived in the 1990s, as the shrtened wrd came t be adpted in cmputing. Tday, a bt is any piece f sftware that runs an autmated task, such as in searching the Internet r playing cmputer games. It has als becme a suffix (后缀), with the functin f the “bt” explained in the ther part f the wrd, as in searchbt, infbt, spybt and warbt.
As early as 1923, Gerge Bernard Shaw had applied the wrd “rbt” t peple wh act autmatically, withut thinking r emtin, usually because f the repetitive wrk they have t d. Nw anyne having autmatn-like behavir risks being labeled. A mvie star called Samantha wh has taken n the same type f character t many times might have her rles described as “Samanthabts.” And in 2009 “Obamabts” arrived — peple wh supprt Barack Obama withut really knwing anything abut him.
32. What des the underlined wrd “cining” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Delivering.B. Imagining.C. Recmmending.D. Inventing.
33. Hw did the wrd “rbt” develp in the 1990s?
A. It was n lnger linked with machines.B. It was shrtened and used in cmputing.
C. It was gradually replaced by “andrid”.D. It was nly used in well-regarded nvels.
34. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A. The effect f “rbt” n peple’s behavir.
B. The ppularity f “rbt” amng mvie stars.
C. The applicatin f “rbt” in different situatins.
D. The cnnectin f “rbt” with public figures.
35. Where is the text prbably taken frm?
A. A science fictin.B. A technlgy newspaper.
C. A writer’s bigraphy.D. A language encyclpedia.

Fun Facts Abut the English Language
The English language is spken by millins f peple wrldwide and is famus fr its many curisities. Frm unusual spelling rules t surprising vcabulary, it ffers learners bth fun and challenges.
Hundreds f new wrds are added t dictinaries every year. In 2020 alne, mre than 500 were included in Merriam-Webster. 36 This shws that language grws tgether with them.
Letters als play curius rles. “E” is by far the mst cmmn, appearing in abut 11% f all wrds. It ccurs in “the,” the mst used wrd, and in verbs like “be.” 37 With s many appearances, it is naturally the mst typed letter n keybards.

In ne sentence — “A rugh-cated, dugh-faced, thughtful plughman strde thrugh the streets f Scarbrugh” — all f them appear. 38 These irregularities remind learners that English spelling has never been fully unified.
Culture adds mre surprises. The United States, fr instance, has never declared English its fficial natinal language, even thugh it dminates (主导) daily life. 39 This shws that a language’s influence depends mre n practice than n law.
English cntinues t evlve. Dictinaries expand every year, ld wrds gain new meanings, and learners everywhere adapt t its changes. 40
A. That is why “E” is called the king f letters.
B. The letter “E” is mainly used in specific writing.
C. Such a fact may surprise many language learners.
D. This mix f rules and exceptins puzzles learners.
E. New wrds ften reflect culture, science, and technlgy.
F. These examples shw hw English language affects culture.
G. As a result, English stays ne f the mst active languages in histry.
