It might have been a thank-yu frm all chimpanzees. She spent her wrking life with them, mainly in the Gmbe Reserve (保护区) alng Lake Tanganyika, and jys came thick and fast. Her mst significant and surprising sighting, thugh, came when she nticed her favrite, David Greybeard, sitting by a termite (白蚁) hill. He used a grass stick t fish ut termites fr fd, even pulling ff leaves t imprve the tl. Befre this, peple had believed nly humans culd make and use tls — many thught this ability was what made humans unique. Gdall’s findings shk the wrld f science.
Gdall had n frmal scientific training. As a child, she dreamed f living in Africa and bserving animals. There, she named chimps like Gliath and Fl instead f numbers, the cmmn practice, but annyed sme scientists. She believed each had its wn persnality, and her detailed ntes made her a leading expert.
Later in life, Gdall was heartbrken t find chimp numbers drpping sharply due t bush-meat trade and habitat lss. Frm then n, she gave up her fieldwrk in favur f speaking ut. She ften started her speeches with a greeting in chimp calls. But under the fun lay deep shame at what her generatin, nt excepting herself, had dne t nature.
In 1991, She funded “Rts &Shts” t encurage yuth t prtect the envirnment. She traveled the wrld, spreading hpe and calling n everyne t care fr nature. Mre than 20 species (物种) f bird arund the wrld use a similar “whining” alarm call t warn that birds like cucks, r brd parasites (寄生动物) that lay their eggs in the nests f ther birds, are arund. The call seems t be understd acrss species, and its use suggest hw language may have riginated.
Will Feeney at the Dnana Bilgical Statin in Spain and his clleagues have nw fund that 21 bird species, including superb fairy-wrens in Australasia, all use similar “whining” sunds when they see a brd parasite.
The researchers fund that the species that prduce this alarm call ften live in areas where there are lts f brd parasites that make use f many different hst species, and when the hsts hear the whining call, they attempt t scare them away with aggressive (攻击性的) physical mbbing. “It’s quite pssible that the mbbing call aims t draw in ther birds t participate in the mbbing,” says Rse Thrgd at the University f Helsinki in Finland.
T investigate further, Feeney and his clleagues played recrdings f the calls made by brd-parasite hsts frm ther cntinents t hst birds in Australia and China. They discvered that hearing the freign warning calls brught ut just as fast a mbbing respnse as hearing the calls prduced by their wn species. Feeney says this suggests there is an inbrn part t the alarm calls that many bird species respnd t, but birds in areas where brd parasites are cmmn have changed the call and respnse t pass n knwledge f the lcal risk.
In 1871, Charles Darwin suggested that spken language may have begun when humans and animals started cpying and changing the sunds they made. “The birds adapting these inbrn calls t anther purpse culd be the first stepping stne twards language,” says Feeney. “S, animal cmmunicatin and human language are clsely related, rather than ‘language’ being a uniquely human feature.”

30. What des the freign call experiment shw?
A. Birds nly respnd t lcal calls.
B. The mbbing respnse is learned quickly.
C. The respnse is inbrn but lcally adapted.
D. All such calls cause a similar reactin.
31. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. A shared alarm call in birds. B. The threat f brd parasites.
C. The develpment f language. D. Supprt fr Darwin’s thery.
